As an artist, I think I can add another layer to this. When a face has perfect vertical symmetry, we don't register it as a real face because real faces just aren't that perfectly symetrical. Because of this, they can fall into the uncanny valley. They make you uncomfortable. When I draw a person in front-facing perspective, I'll use the symmetry tool but I'll always go back in and liquify or redraw some of the features to break the symmetry and make them less creepy and lifeless. The uncanny valley plays a huge part in this because our brains register symetrical faces as unnaturally perfect. Plus, asymetry can make things more interesting and therefor more memorable. I'm no scientist or mathematician though, so take this with a grain of salt. (Side note- I already love this new channel. It's a really creative and cool idea)

100% CORRECT! I can't agree with this strongly enough! Perfectly symmetrical faces actually give me minor anxiety feelings, especially faces I'm normally familiar with (Perfect Sym-Matpat is a PERFECT example..*shudders*). And i get chills looking at them. The Uncanny Valley trope sums the experience up in totality.

In art, asymmetry is often a desired trait, as long as it's with purpose. If you have a symmetrical piece, it's boring, it's simple, it's quick to analyze and quick to throw into the bin. However, asymmetrical pieces leave you thinking, they cause your brain to go into overdrive as your eyes wander the entire canvas. Why? Because like Aerosmith, you "don't wanna miss a thing." You check every Tom Nook and cranny and try to understand everything about it. It's like a scavenger hunt or a "Where's Waldo?" In some cases, you find yourself asking "why?" and in others, like certain precarious sculptures, you ask yourself "how?" It's like Matt's older FNAF videos mention. You keep going back looking for more, but when you figure out all of the answers, your brain discards it as no longer necessary. It's complete, it's finished, but by not answering every question, it stays in the back of your mind. That's why pieces like "Mona Lisa" are so memorable, not because of the portrait itself, but because of the mysteries surrounding it. Seriously, in reading the name "Mona Lisa," you can't tell me a silhouette of the painting didn't just pop up in your mind... Right? Only me? Well, I'm weird.

A Color wheel is literally my best friend, you can do complementaries or triangles or “neighbors” (colors that touch each other) I definitely recommend using one
@emilyvalentine4565
@emilyvalentine4565 Жыл бұрын
For what it's worth this is largely solvable in my experience by using color theory, on which there are of course a number of great videos by professional artists. Essentially colors work well not just in direct contrast (red + green), but in more extensive but related groups of contrast (red + yellow-green & cyan or red & yellow + cyan & indigo); in this though you should factor value (lightness-darkness) and saturation (how "diluted" a color is) not just hue.

Would recommend learning about colour theory and use a colour wheel for that. Example, complementary colours are opposite of each other on the colour wheel. Which is what makes them match each other by balancing out light and dark. This is the most known and easiest one to learn about since all you do is look at a colour wheel. Thats my advice for you

I always found the idea that symetry as beauty to be odd, considering things like beauty marks are often considered attractive, and many of the best fashion outfits are intentionally not symetrical. I've always found style and faces with less symetry to be more attractive, because they are more interesting to look at.
@googli300
@googli300 6 ай бұрын
I wouldn't say perfect symmetry is beautiful, but a tendency towards symmetry. The same principle is applied in design because symmetry is the easiest way to achieve visual balance. Asymmetrical fashion, like you mentioned, draws our attention because it looks different. My guess is there's still balance achieved through the weight of colors and shapes, but I'm no fashionista.

Personally, I would have considered the Theorist team data from the survey into the theory, not as means of comparing it to the same symmetry standards as the other results, but instead as a prove that physical appearance isn't everything when it comes to attractiveness, even if done subconsciously or "as a joke", the intend of calling the Theorist team more attractive than random stock images proves that familiarity and just knowing a person better than a random stranger is a more valuable asset towards attractiveness, a point that would also apply into the celebrities favor, as we all amply recognize the celebrities by their acting roles or their music, immediately easing the brain into ignoring their "asymmetry" and deeming them as attractive because they are recognizable and their personas are identifiable.

If you ever get the chance to revisit this concept, you should include naturally symmetrical faces to the survey, and for the Photoshop faces work on the shading and eye direction, many of those faces hit the uncanny valley because you can tell they've been digitally altered, either by the shadows not working the way shadows normally work or the eyes no longer looking in the same direction, or both. This can definitely be expanded upon to make a serious, potentially publishable, bit of research.

Exactly what I was thinking they’re soo perfect they cross the line that it ruins the results. I think the symmetrical faces mainly looks unearthly because of the odd lighting, the majority of the stock photos had one side of the face lit up and the other slightly darker. When the image is flipped symmetrically the face is lit up unnaturally making it seem eery. The faces of the theorists had much more even lighting although not completely perfect so they looked a little better then the stock photos when symmetrical. I still think that a perfectly symmetrical face would still score lower but I think the large difference is mainly because of the unnatural lighting.

The problem with the test you guys did with the faces is that lighting wasn't taken into account. This. A symmetrical face is not the same as a symmetrical photo of a face. Adding to this, the camera being even slightly off center or the head being slightly tilted can completely skew the result for any of these "rules", and that's without even going how different camera lenses can affect it as well.

At 13:27 you talk about the guy who doesnt have even proportions but i 100% believe thats part of the picture problem with the angle it was taken. If you look at his shoulders he is facing to the side and has his head turned towards the camera but its not quite square with the camera which is what is throwing it off. I dont think his ears are that different, just that you can see one more than the other due to the angle.

Finally got around to watching this and I have a question for Matpat, specifically about the pictures you used and ones like Face 13. In your analysis you say that he's asymmetrical, and in particular that one ear is larger, but did you take into account that he wasn't truly facing the camera head on? The bigger ear/the one that looks like it sticks out further is closer to the camera and especially depending on the lens that was used to take it (which I know you have no way of knowing) that could affect how big it looks in the picture by a lot. I'd be curious to see how that could effect the results.

Coming from an artists perspective one of the reasons they look so cursed is that when they’re flipped so are the shadows, leaving an disconnect from the shadows of the face to the rest of the image. This results in that uncanny feeling you get where you know somethings off.
