Do you wash your legs? Yes, that’s a legitimate question. And prepare to be shocked because there are more people who DON’T wash their legs than you’d realize. Their reasoning is that GRAVITY takes care of the wash. So are the non-washers saving time in the shower or are they just extremely dirty? Let’s turn on the hot water and find out.

Hairdressers child here! Conditioner actually prevents your hair from becoming incredibly oily. Shampoo strips you hair of all its oils, including the natural ones, so before the hair can panic and start producing an abundance of oil to compensate, we use conditioner to bring some form of hydration back to the hair!

@@smalachit1571 Conditioner is usually for the hair thats not directly above the scalp. The shampoo is supposed to wash off the grease roots of your hair. But yes, this would usually depend on the type of hair as well. So, I suggest doing more research on your hair length, texture, type and recommended amount of conditioner and stuff.

I'm late to the party, but wanna rep for my fellow eczema sufferers. I have really dry sensitive skin anyway, and severe eczema along with that. I literally can NOT shower or wash my legs every single day unless I want to end up with my skin dying and flaking off and itching to the point I scratch past it bleeding. I only wash the "necessities" every day, hair when it gets dirty, and everything else just gets a rinse or washed when I get real sweaty or dirty from something, in which case I do even wash my legs then aww. But otherwise, I desperately have to cling to whatever oil barrier my body is willing to produce, because no amount of lotion can truly replicate that protection. So knowing that it's okay I'm almost never washing my legs makes me pretty happy.

I have severe ezcema, I regularly shower 4-5 times weekly with a organic oatmeal soap bar or, if I'm especially sweaty, a dial non-scented soap bar; and use a African scrub cloth. Then lotion after with Cetaphil unscented lotion or Aquafor in the winter to keep my skin moist and healthy. I know not all skins are the same but this is what's worked for me. I haven't had a major flare up for almost 10 years, I haven't had to go back to my doctor for steroid creams.

I'm so thorough with how I scrub and rinse myself in the shower. I was surprised that nobody was at least rubbing the soap off under the water with their hands for each individual area. I have no faith in gravity, so I give the water a little extra push that way. But because I'm so thorough with my showers, on a regular day, my showers last anywhere from 15-20 minutes; on a FULL wash day (once a week including deep cleaning my long curly hair, shaving my entire body pit to toe, removing calluses from my feet, etc.) my showers can easily take over an hour and a half.

@@Skelepty Unfortunately yes. Wish I didn't have to, but I can't find a quicker way to do it. Just my hair alone takes about 40-50 minutes, and I shave my body and file my foot calluses down while I let the shampoo sit on my scalp (dermatologist's orders, I'm not supposed to wash it off right away, gotta rinse after 5 minutes). I also have to triple wash my hair to get rid of buildup from my hair products, because it's impossible to have nice curly hair without a ton of leave-in products in it. Oh lord and it tangles itself immediately after I stop combing it so I gotta keep combing and combing... showering is just so messy until the hair portion is complete, then it's smooth sailing.

@@AmandaNavarroI also have the „Everything-Shower“ once a week. :) But I always stop the water flow when scrubbing, massaging shampoo in, leaving conditioner, shaving etc. I only use it, when I actually need to rinse out the shampoo or something. I am an ADVID conditioner user and at first I was so confused(and a little irritated I admit) about Matt saying that conditioner is useless. But then I remembered I have long curly thick hair that needs to be moisturized and untangled. Meanwhile Matt has (unknown thickness) short straight hair that the natural oil produced by the scalp can reach. So along with his regular trims that he gets removing the dead ends, he also had less factors for hair breakage!

Stephanie would be a great play-by-play color analyst. Also, something else not taken into account for this experiment is different pressure-style shower heads. I’ve seen some shower heads with 5 different types of water pressure styles
@Skye_Writer
@Skye_Writer 23 күн бұрын
Also, the clothing is going to play a factor here. Yes, Matt and Amy and Steph were all wearing shorts that are tight to the leg (unlike Sam, whose loose shorts let the water drip off the hem and down around his feet instead of running down his leg), but the clothing does retain a lot of the water, even when it's fully wet. Without anything else on the skin, the water and soap you put on the top part of your body is going to run down the lower half more freely and get you cleaner. Obviously they couldn't do that kind of experiment on camera, but honestly bathing suits -- bikinis for the ladies and short-short or Speedo trunks with no shirts for the guys would have given more accurate results. That, or the type of swimwear used in competitions, the stuff that is made to glide through water without causing any drag.

Hello from Spain! Idk if this is more common here in Europe or if I'm just weird, but I usually just use the little handheld showerhead (idk how it's called in English); in fact, in my mother's home there isn't one of those that are set in the wall, so you had to use the handheld one. As for other showering info, male, double shampoo, no conditiones, my shower gel is liquid so idk what I'd do with a bar of soap, definitely wash my legs (and my feet, until they feel nice and soft, not harsh). Nice video, btw!, and sry for my English.

Y'all should do a series of hair care theories. Of course Mat doesn't use conditioner, he has short hair. My hair is very long, and the only way to keep the ends from drying out is by using conditioner on the hair that's bellow the ears, letting it sit for a while before lightly washing out the excess. That being said, I also trained my hair to only need to be washed every 10-ish days as long as i don't put extra product in it. It saves me a whole lot of shampoo and conditioner, especially compared to when i washed it every other day.

I would love a series of episodes on haircare! I married a hairstylist who specializes in fantasy hair color, and now my hair is no longer its natural color. It is about shoulder length and to keep it clean I need to shampoo it (single scrub) about every-other day. Since it is bleached, I have to condition it daily, or it gets super dry. I was warned that hair stripped of oil leads to split end and breakages. When my hair was short and natural, I could shampoo daily and get away with conditioning once a week. Maybe an episode on conditioner and/or beard oil?

I feel like the important thing with a video like that would be to include different hair types because curly and kinky hair cannot get as naturally oiled as straight hair due to the hair follicles having a more oval shape. What surprised me most was the total absence of any _mention_ of detachable shower-heads. Also, my routine involves turning the water off during the soap/shampoo application, and only turning it on for the rinsing; presumably, that would make a fairly major difference as well. (And if anyone's collecting data: for me, it's two rounds of soap (YES to manually washing legs), two rounds of shampoo, one round of conditioner, one round of facial cleanser; and one rinse in between each step, including between repeats and at the beginning and end.)

Maybe hopefully they can revisit this a some later point with the variations of if say you had a detachable shower-head and if that would be the ideal way to get your legs washed, without actually scrubbing them as you can just hose them down, especially with some that can switch streams from a normal pressure to a jet like pressure.

Something to note @thestyletheorists is that you can also track dirt with not just dirt, but also by using an ultraviolet compound. This means that it would show exactly what would have come off or not. We did this with our cooking class to show what washing hands and scrubbing does. Even though you rinsed it off, you could see how much germs/bacteria were left with an ultraviolet light. The difference will be night and day with this type of testing and the results will be drastic.

Or is using surfactants new? Also I don’t shampoo my hair. Just twice a week. I do use conditioner instead when I’m feeling a little sweaty but if I don’t need it I was told I need to avoid shampooing to much cus it’ll dry out your hair and my hair was dry shampooing everyday

As a black woman with long, dry hair, I use a leave in conditioner to detangle and contain the remaining natural oils on my hair. One thing that bothers me about this is it was not confirmed whether the coffee grounds dried on their legs before washing. If it's wet it's way easier to rinse away. And soap becomes less impactful Also. It's fair and well that the dirt is washed off. What about the bacteria on your skin? The handwashing guidelines are like way more involved than the average person's washing techniques and that's been shown to leave microorganisms on your skin.

Maybe it's just the videos I've watched, but most of the theory videos doing experiments tend to have... less-than-rigorous testing methods. I get it, the channels are mostly for fun, they have a small team, etc., but in the end most of their testing barely rises to the level of a case study in terms of evidence for or against certain hypotheses. They eliminate a handful of factors, but ignore many other (sometimes very obvious) explanations or confounding factors. If the proof is in the pudding, then these videos might qualify as the milk, or the flavoring, but definitely not the whole shebang. Buuuuuuut they're amusing, and they offer something to consider, so I keep watching anyways. After all, there's still plenty of value in what they do, so I try to take it for what it is.

Okay, another important question I'd love to see answered on here is how _often_ your should shower. You talked about how some soaps cling too well and remove all the oils from your skin, but your skin does still need some oils. This is where the theory that it's healthier to _not_ shower every day comes into play. Personally, I try to shower only every other day (though I might rince down if I got particularly sweaty that day) and find that my skin feels smoother and healthier than back when I did shower every day, but I'm also well aware that that is anecdotal and could just be placebo/confirmation bias.

What about exfoliation though? I like to use a natural loofah to help exfoliate my whole body including legs when I shower. Can yall do a part 2 study to see if exfoliating your legs helps anti aging/promote healthy young skin?

Not too often you see a couples bathroom shower setup! xD Also, as a long-hair haver, conditioner absolutely helps. It not only makes my hair soft and shiny, but also helps my hair bush glide through it without pulling out near as much hair as when I don't use conditioner.

I would feel the same way about conditioner, but if you have colored or permed hair, you're never going to get a comb through it until you put the conditioner on. It's some instant chemical reaction that changes the hair so it untangles. But it does seem to take forever to rinse out, and if you don't, yep, greasy hair.

Lol, I definitely never double wash my hair. Though sometimes ill just stay in the shower and clean my body repeatedly. Part of it is its sometimes really hard to turn off a nice hot shower.....

Other variables. Water pressure, smaller molecular things to wash off such as grass stains, blood from cuts, maybe a spilled drink, ph level of the water, bar soap vs body wash, a quick rub with your hand instead of scrub with something like a wash cloth, height of participants, distance from shower head to initial contact point of participant

Another BIG and I mean BIG factor that they didn't test is that their "dirt" was quite fresh and rather moisture rich itself. Do this same test after someone's been doing something like roadwork or ripping up a garden for 10 hours and a lot of that dirt and filth is going to be caked on and is not going to come off with a casual rinse.

I'm outside in my garden a lot when it's summer. When I only wear shorts, earth, dirt and sand really gets in the pores and I have to scrub my legs properly to get them back to their original color. So gravity showers would not work. Also, look clean ain't the same as clean. I want to point out also, that I have a shower that has a detachable shower head on a house because I don't believe it's much harder to get clean when the water just comes from above.

Idk if this is like a European thing but I actually only have a showerhead attached to the bathtub. It's not a static traditional showerhead I actually have to hold it in my hand while showering or lay it down into the tub while showering. It's annoying sometimes but it's actually much quicker then the rainfall shower my aunt has. I can get in and out the shower in like five minutes if I really wanna be quick.

This!! Mat's over here like, "eh, basically the same amount clean, minimal difference," and I'm sitting here like 😳 SIR! Tell that to the microscopic bacteria colonies living in that "minimal" amount of grime - especially when the grime is sweat and possibly things much dirtier than coffee grounds.

@@Amarianee he did touch on it at the end, mentioning the removal of dead skin cells and preventing ingrown hair. But, appearance wise (which is the main reason someone would want to make the effort) you can do without washing your legs.
@Amarianee

@@donutchan8114 given that the argument online is, "the water running down your body cleans your legs," and the entire premise of the video was, "do your legs get clean without washing them," appearance is not "the main reason someone would want to make the effort." The point is, soapy water running down your body does not get your legs clean. CleanER than when you got into the shower doesn't mean "clean," and this video only proved that. The fact that there was _any_ residue left on the unwashed legs shows that the hypothesis is busted. As others have pointed out, the true deciding factor would have been to swab the legs, and take a microscopic look at the results.

Its definitely on a case by case basis. I naturally produce a lot of oil (both in my hair and skin) so if I use conditioner (outside of the two in one that I use now), I look all oily and gross even once I'm fully dry.
