As a Scandinavian, I feel personally exposed. Now going to get dressed, in my grey coat and androgynous black boots, thinking of maybe being bold today and wear a hunter green scarf instead of my go-to grey Acne scarf,

As I grew past my 30s, I´ve noticed that I´m starting to lean towards the Scandi aesthetic wearing mostly neutral and muted solid colors and clean lines because the style is so fuss-free and light.

I think what you describe as the Scandinavian style aesthetic can also be found in the Netherlands. When I was in Amsterdam 3 1/2 years ago, it seemed to me that Dutch women don't tend to go for bling or frou-frou either, yet they tend to look smarter and better put-together than their North American counterparts. As a rule, clothing was casual (but never dirty or sloppy), simple (fitted but not tight), modest (few short-shorts or minis, no cleavage hanging out, or slits up to there); jewelry and makeup were minimal (I saw a server or two wearing false eyelashes and heavy eyeliner; but that was about it). Leather bags were burnished and waterproofed; shoes were clean and shined. Both were simple and free of non-functional chains, locks, grommets, zippers or buckles. I saw only a handful of young women in stilettos, and they were walking very gingerly on the paving bricks. Most women wore chunky booties, or flat sandals made of good leather. I didn’t see anyone-male, female or indeterminate-in flip-flops, shower sandals, puffy white sneakers or ball caps. I thought of it as a "Euro-classy" look. And you are absolutely right, Naja-- simple cuts, neutral colours and subtle patterns age well and will not look dated a year or two-- or even ten-- later!

As an American I am absolutely obsessed with the Scandi look. It’s really changed the way I look in such a good way and has made me focus on buying higher quality pieces and pieces that are essential. And it truly looks so damn good. And I just love the all blacks and neutrals. I know ppl get really mad when ppl bring up wearing mostly dark colors but there really is no better form of dressing like the way Scandinavian ppl dress. I also love how unlike in America the casualness is not lazy or “running errands” looking, and the classic element is not overly “ladylike”. It’s just very cool looking and stylish with a mixture of feminine and masculine. Which in turn makes Scandinavians look so well dressed not like they are lazy or if they tried too hard. Can’t wait to travel to Scandinavia next year and see if my wardrobe holds up to actual real Scandinavians. :)

With the predominance of blue-eyed blondes/light brunettes and pale skin in Scandinavia, I think most people have cool, muted coloring. So it makes sense that those colors would be preferred. I love muted colors for my coloring, plus their “quietness”. I just feel out of place in strong, bright, clear colors and find muted neutrals so much easier to style.

Well we are a lot of scandinavians with Dark blonde hair and peach/Golden skin and green/amber eyes ..i never ever understand why people Think everybody are blond? None om my friends, and family or in my School class were born blond. We very ofren have a warm tone in our skin , hair and eyes. As a color Consulting , i never advise to Wear Black or Grey for us scandinavians, as it makes us look ill. Black takes all color from the face and You have to put on a lot of makeup to look healthy. But we go a lot for natural fibre clothes and interior and No acrylics

Clothing in Scandinavia is, like in most countries I imagine, an extension of the culture. We are typically quite reserved and practical which is often reflected in the way we dress.

The Scandi or Nordic fashion has definitely become more colourful during the past few years, and there's more graphic patterns and things like glitter going on. Yet some people only wear muted tones and black. The other components are similar, I'd say. I really love Nordic fashion for how it camouflages the body shape and you can just show a bit of your body when you feel like it.

As a Canadian this definitely speaks to me. Our style is very similar, perhaps it's the winters. It is common to see cozy layers, natural fabrics, lots of neutrals and the occasional punch of colour. Minimalist but functional design for longevity and sustainability, no matter the weather. Great video, thanks! New sub 😊👍

Your points about romanticized style are right on with where I’m at pertaining to looking more feminine without overdoing it in terms of practicality and personal style. I’ve had several wardrobe regret purchases trying to follow after a feminine aesthetic such as that of Sezane (French brand). It turned out to be too impractical and a little bit too flamboyant for my North Idaho, USA culture. The patterns and prints also became too much trying to pair my more neutral yet flowy and intricately designed and textured feminine pieces with patterned skirts or silk scarves. I find delicate, subdued patterns are wonderful for things like dresses that are a singular outfit piece or even sets. Sets are more challenging to find though. I love the idea of finding feminine fabrics in more simple cuts! It is a wonderful in between for adding a little bit of femininity two one’s personal style.

I love the Scandinavian emphasis on practicality! My wardrobe sweet spot is when I love the look but the item is practical, versatile, utilitarian, e.g. extra pockets, hidden hoods, convertible sleeves or hems, substantial materials that are comfortable and washable. My crazy criteria when considering a new purchase is, Can I climb a tree in it? 😂 Thanks so much for sharing this perspective!!

A comment below had a great point that Scandinavian genetics do affect what they look best in. They were talking about coloring, but height definitely plays in too- the tallest national average heights in the world are all in Scandinavia, so long straight clean lines that aren’t too airy or fluffy best complement that. Even though I am slim, I am “short” in comparison and thus will never have the natural body lines to complement an entirely long linear outfit without any curves in my clothes & accessories.

Great presentation! I think the classical neutral style you showed is more timeless. Some of the neon and patterned “total looks” seem more youthful / Tik Tok influenced and transient as trends, but I could see them being incorporated into more classical looks as separates, e.g. neon trousers with a black or white turtleneck, a bright cardigan with a pencil skirt in a muted color, etc. Trends should be about figuring out which ones are so “you” that they become part of your permanent style collection. But for wackier trends, best to try them second-hand.

I am really glad I fell upon your video. First timer here. I really liked your summary and points of scandi style. I see that this is exactly what I do and aim for. I am super influenced by Emma hill and Use_less. Nice to see them in your video. Lol. It’s good to have a word / style attached to what it is I am - that way I can look things up for inspiration easier. I too get my influence of what to wear from nature. Come spring and summer I love the brighter teal and even lime green. I match the season which is so hygge to me. And I liked how you talked about how the Scandinavian’s wear clothes with a purpose. I have always been like that and like to know now that a whole culture does that too. Spring and summer are the hardest and not as fun for me to style myself. But now I will look on Pinterest for spring summer Scandinavian style. Maybe that will help. Thanks again 😊

Thank you so much for another wonderful video! I have been thinking about Scandinavian style and how under stated it truly is in comparison to other rather popular styles such as Parisian/French chic. I definitely resonate more with the Scandinavian style for reasons of greater simplicity and practicality for colder climates. I live in North Idaho, USA and we must dress for practicality here. We get a lot of cold, wet weather 9 months of the year. Ironically though, many people actually do not dress for the weather! I see a lot of shorts and button ups with tennis shoes in the rain and cold, sometimes even freezing temperatures! It’s rather odd, but season adaption does take time because we do get More intense seasonal elements. I do very much feel out of place sometimes with the classic, more refined and truly simple style I have that seems to belong in a country like Scandinavia or France… or even Italy! But I love it and I feel so good in it regardless. Today, I actually looked in the mirror before I left and decided to take my belt off. I look in the mirror every day before I leave, but this particular day, I knew something had to be removed. It’s amazing how one accessory can really change an outfit! I have a lot of very nice belts in colors I love that match purses and shoes but somehow have been wearing them less. I don’t think I’ve seen you wear a belt before. As soon as I took the belt off, I instantly looked complete, funny how that goes. I’ve been doing this with jewelry recently also. A lot of fashion bloggers here layer two or three necklaces, have several rings, multiple piercings… sometimes bracelets And watches; it looks like a heap of jewelry and anywhere you look, there is a piece. I used to be drawn to it but now, after experimenting with my own style, I decided it just isn’t for me. It looks over complicated and it really is when trying to discern what to layer. I also found that necklaces would get tangled up together and get all twisted and look strange. I would always need to check my necklace structure and untwist them whenever I went to the bathroom. No, not for me. Especially with the prove of quality pieces. But more than this, I found it really distracted me from my style and started to look full of effort, rather than “effortless”. And it does take a lot of effort! I am still playing around with more bold jewelry pieces, namely necklaces. I can’t go too large with earrings, otherwise my ears look too pronounced because they do pop out away from my head a bit.

I totally agree with that overdone with jewellery part. I used to think how one can wear 2-3 layered necklace without it getting tangled then I realise I've different lifestyle than the people I'm watching on the internet. You did a great analysis ✨❤️

I live in a nothern state in US and it is cool or cold here 9 monts out of the year. It could be 40 in the morning and 70 in the afternoon so layering is the key! I always wear leggings with a shorter skirt or dress. A sweater or leather coat or both is key with sneakers or boots. If it is hot, I have black or beige sandals. Scarves are a good layering item. I just started wearing loose flowey clothes and I love the look. I just buy a size up.

Coco Chanel said to remove one thing, it maybe it was “remove one accessory”. I’d like to see women wear less jewelry; multiple necklaces, bracelets, rings, watch and earrings are just too much of a good thing. I like to wear a necklace or earrings, but not necessarily both, and can’t be bothered stacking multiple dainty necklaces every day, the tiny, cheap clasps are just too fiddly. It takes forever to get the lengths and weights right and put them on without help, I’m single nowadays. Jewelry is more dainty nowadays because of the prohibitive cost of gold, but wearing a lot of jewelry, regardless of weight/style, is just too showy.

as long as I am wearing fake metals I prefer custom jewelry that does not pretend to be gold. At the moment I prefer interesting /statement necklaces and I prefer to have only this piece without also piling up rings and/or bracelets, and/or earrings.

I truly love the classic Scandi style you’ve described in this video, but I spend a lot of time in Ireland where the weather is cold, grey and windy all year round too. I’ve just found that if we’re really talking about practicality, the lighter neutral pieces (particularly in footwear and trousers/jeans) simply DON’T work! The constant rain means constant mud, and esp with the longer, less tailored hemlines in a lot of Scandi style, a beautiful cream or even tan/light grey pair of trousers, and definitely shoes, would be filthy in no time. I struggle a lot when in Ireland with how to feel “happy” with so little sunshine, and wearing dark, muted colors definitely doesn’t help. :-/ So I appreciate the color trends coming into fashion (though admittedly, many are ridiculous looking!). I think bolder pops of color are where it’s at for me personally anyway, when living in a gloomy, wet climate! But when I’m back in the US, esp in summer, I really do just lovvvve the classic neutrals and principles of Scandi style, which you so beautifully described here! 💗

Regarding "Less is more". Coco Chanel reportedly said either it or "Less is always more". However, it did not originate with her. In 1855, Robert Browning stated it in the poem “Andrea del Sarto”. The Geodesic Dome was created with the principle 'doing more with less'. Not the same wording, but the concept is the same. Its value is time tested and beneficial for our wonderful planet's health.

My one exception to the useful-only rule is my weakness for silk scarves, I just can’t resist them. I suppose they do have some function for me, they protect my sensitive neck skin. I got up in the middle of the night last night and put one around my neck, which was so irritated that it woke me up. I wonder if they snuck some synthetic into the trim of the “100% cotton” blanket that caused the rash. Maybe I can replace or cover the trim, but it’s hard to find silk blanket binding anymore, it’s only polyester, which does the same irritating thing.

Living in Northern Germany, very near the border to DK, and after having had a Danish upbringing, adress and life, I wouldn't choose anything else than the Scandinavian style, though I'm looking upon others, too. Just curious.

You mentioned that prints are not organic. When I wear prints, I really lean toward florals, etc. How is that perceived in Scandinavia? Like in the US, we have certain aesthetics that lean "hippy" or "edgy" and so forth. I'm curious what vibes wearing a floral print dress gives .

I am very surprised that the Danes allowed themselves to be influenced by trends. I thought they were more anchored in their style. I'm sure not every one participates? I do not particularly care for the pastels that you showed, and they seem out of place. This was very enjoyable. Thank you.

I love the simplicity, sophistication and restraint of Scandi style. I’m just not liking those super-feminine, detailed and elaborate styles. Like last summer’s trendy dress: floral, tiered, ruffled, smocked, pintucked, gathered, with lace, embroidery and ribbons on top. Really? Darling on party dresses for 5-year old girls, not on adult women.

I live in Denmark for the last 6 years and real women here can't stand some big influencers' style and find some of their big influencers' outfits ridiculus - what they are wearing, they would never dress like that they say. I think influencers of the era use a lot of clown colours to get attention and in real life I don't see people walk in those clothing in big cities yes. But in summer it's true pastel colours take over and especially gingham print yes! All stores carry this trend in summers. In winter brands like Stine Goya still run the pastel crazy collections. My favorite brands from Scandinavia are: Arket, and other stories, Cos, HM, Monki ( they have great jeans) and Acne if I have to choose designer. I tried alot but could not like Ganni designs those oversize bib collars are ridiculus ( dresses, shirts). But girls here are obsessed with Ganni and I see alot of girls wearing head to toe Ganni. Btw it took me some years to adopt Scandi style and get use it and like it. Because it was too genderless to me not girly. But then I realized you can adopt it to your own style and at some point I adopted the style code and blend in.

My personal favorites are: MbyM, MOSS Copenhagen, Samsøe, Mads Nørgaard, GANNI, Vagabond (boots). These brands are all very mid range. Mid range Scandinavian brands are usually pretty high up there quality wise which is why I like to shop at these.

I’ll pass on the pants dragging on the ground, though, they can be ruined in one wearing. I think these people are only wearing them for one Insta photo, then returning them.
