This song is a Masterpiece! Dennis absolutely gives it his all in this STYX Classic. From the very beginning with his piano, to the wonderful singing of these lyrics to arguably the bands greatest song! The build-uo into the the gathering of Angels gives me goose bumps. A song that gets even better with age! The 70's era was loaded with so much raw talented musicians and STYX was part of it!

No doubt! I have a stupid ridiculous long concert list that looking back, I can barely believe I did all that. It was too much fun. I always joke with my favorite reactors about the time machine and how I would love to take them back just to laugh my ass off watching their heads implode at one of these shows. And to see the show again of course. You have to admit it would funnier than fuck. People talk about fantasies, if only one time, I would do this.

I do not think I ever went to a high school keggar without cruising to this song, as well as Dream On, Carry On My Wayward Son, Foreplay and Long Time, and so many other timeless classics! GOD I miss those days!

@@alanmcclure9546, it’s quite a thing looking back at it, isn’t it? Who knew? We for damn sure weren’t thinking about the long term future. I got a lot in back in those days. A LOT! Ha ha! Too much fun! Like I’m fond of saying to the reactors, I have stories for days!

@@philstone3859 I can remember thinking, as the Berlin Wall came down, WOW, Cold war is Over, Now what is to come of new music? Is something I think about everytime I watch these kids, as I call them now, lol, react to these videos from our generations, and the answer I get to my old question becomes so clear, that our music was written to get us through the Cold War, and its helping these Kids once again to have some Faith in Something they wont understand until Humanity goes Good Again!

So nice to find someone who listens to the whole song before reacting. I just came from a reviewer who interrupted 10 times in the first three minutes. And yes, storytelling in lyrics seems to be a lost art. Styx belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Styx was from Chicago as well as Cheap Trick (Rockford) and they were always on Chicago radio (WLS ans WCFL) being interviewed. Great Days back then for music from Chicago and everywhere else. Glad you reacted to Styx. Many Memories being brought back in my mind. Heck, even back then when there was AM radio there was no stereo. Thankfully FM came soon afterwards.

When I started college, I had a cheap car with a radio. No CD, cassette, or bluetooth. This was a song that played every day on the classic rock stations, and probably still does. That's one way songs end up being part of American culture. Some people call it being overplayed, but I didn't mind this one, and hey, now I pretty much know it by heart.

Lead vocalist Dennis De Young has been married to the same woman for many years and has written two love songs to her that were big hits for Styx. One of the earliest Styx hits was the song Lady, which I think you'll really like. Later, he wrote the Song "Babe" which ended up being a big hit for them as well... that song is a more classic ballad, but still a lovely song. Lady starts out as a ballad, but builds in intensity as the song builds to its satisfying conclusion.

You are very right about this song bringing back so many memories, growing up as migrants we as a family travel state to state to work out in the fields to harvest produce. Me and my brothers always had a huge boom box that played cassettes and 8Track and we always had a huge collection of each in those days. Styx was one of the families favorite rock bands in those days, we just couldn't get enough of them. That particular album cover became the image and title to our high school talent show "The Grand Illusion" of course we were the freshman kids that year but our show blew the sophomores, juniors, and seniors away

Love this song. The First Styx song I heard was Babe, which I still love. I do like that era of Styx w/ the likes of Lady (both versions), and of course the Paradise Theatre album. Another 2 bands from the era to consider would be Kansas and Triumph. Kansas songs include Dust in the Wind, Point of No Return, & Carry On My Wayward Son., + more. Triumph songs include (best known for) A World of Fantasy, Magic Power, Lay It On The Line, & (my fav) Never Say Never. Just a sampler for you to consider.

Elok you must not be the last reactor to react to the band Jinjer and their live (studio) version of Pisces. You like changes in tempo this is the song for you, and you could also be shocked at her intensity once she lets loose with her primal voice. Listen to come sail away again without the middle masterpiece edit. This version was edited for a promo video version. They removed the best parts of the song. Find a different ( non official video) and you get the real masterpiece. One of Rick's classic greats of all-time. Dennis DeYoung wrote and sang lead on this amazing songs. It's about yearning to be in a better or different place than you are now.

This song resonates so much with me. (And the album version is so much better bcuz of the psychedeli and outter space keyboard solo)... - "A gathering of angels, appeared above my head". "They sang to me this song of "hope".... - "I thought that they were angels. But to my surprise, - we climbed aboard their starship, and headed for the skies"... To me, it's like the song writer had a vision of (friendly) ETs, and possibly made subconscious contact with them. Could it had been thru acid trips, mushroom trips, or marijuana? Maybe. But I feel like there was some sort of contact made with the Guardians of our Universe. Now, I totally get this song. It's sad, but in a happy, glorious way.

Styx has been my favorite band since 1977, so I'm glad you enjoyed it. However, you did not get the real thing. This is the cut-down edited video for MTV. Listen to the whole song: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4qmd6WZeNabbbM For a live version, check out this from the 1996 Return To Paradise tour: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jH6ph559dpaEnNmI Styx has a lot of great songs, so I'll just suggest your next one to check out, "Prelude 12/Suite: Madam Blue"(kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYDPe4N3Z9mIqNk). OK, you did a live version of Suite: Madam Blue", so try "Crystal Ball" - live with CYO: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5W8eWlol9Wgm8U I usually recomend some hard-rockers, but for you I'd suggest these: "Lady" (studio or live from 1996), "Fooling Yourself", "Lorelei", "Pieces Of Eight", "Clair De Lune/Ballerina", and "Man In The WIlderness". Or for hard-rockers: "Castle Walls" and "Queen Of Spades".
