M White That song was by Dennis de Young and it’s probably his best song! After not hearing it for years I heard it the other day and realized what a great Song it still is. And I like that refrain of America at the end! It just fits the song perfectly!

I agree 💯 percent! Those are two of my favorites as well. Miss America was a James Young song and was a sarcastic song about how shallow Beauty Pagents are and the lyrics were brilliant! In your cage at the human zoo, They all stop to look at you! Next year what will you do? When you have been forgotten? I thought those lyrics were Brutal! He did not hold back! And Suite Madame Blue is another Dennis de Young masterpiece! One of his best songs!

I used to know how to play the piano part because I loved this song so much when I was a kid. I figured it out by ear. Boy, did my ear hurt! It’s not easy to bang out a song with your ear! But seriously I learned the entire part and was so proud of myself that I figured it all out by trial and error. Of course, now I forgot it all. Anyway, I knew you’d like it because it’s still a good song after all these years. Good Reactions!

Amazing song with a catchy chorus and tempo🎶 The lyrics are about keeping on trying and it it doesn't work out on Earth, they could step on a starship and make tomorrow happen on a star out there in the Galaxy 💫 Great reaction Enoma ✨⚡

"Lyrically, the song uses sailing as a metaphor to achieve one's dreams. The lyrics touch on nostalgia of "childhood friends," escapism, and a religious thematic symbolized by "a gathering of angels" singing "a song of hope." The ending lyrics explain a transformation from a sailing ship into a starship, by narrating that "we climbed aboard our starship and headed for the skies" which also imply biblical verses from Ezekiel (1:1-28)".

Styx is my favorite band and has been since I first heard this song in 1977, when I was 7. Once a Styx fan, always a Styx fan, but my appreciation of this group didn't come easy. By the time my friends began liking music in 1981, Styx had lost the respect of many DJs in Seattle for being too commercial. Songs like Babe, The Best of Times, and later, Mr. Roboto starting wedging musically philosophical difference within the band and driving away fans. All of their songs are compositionally solid music but their style just changed due to the autocratic tendencies of Dennis De Young and the passive/aggressive responses of Tommy Shaw. Also their drummer, John Panozzo started having drinking problems. Other music was beginning to take over. As a result of band issues, the local DJs in my hometown of Seattle started making fun of this band almost every time they play their music on the rock stations. DJs' harassment of Styx in Seattle lasted up until 2015. I finally, as a middle-aged woman, got sick of their jokes of Tommy Shaw's "girly" appearance and goofy music. I called both classic rock stations, and left long messages on every DJ's voice mail told them off about their assinine jokes about Styx, and how I was physically bullied in school by rockers who had sworn allegiance to hair metal bands. I left personal messaged on their FB accounts as well. Finally, I got an apology from one of the worst offending DJs by email. Since then, when I go back to Seattle and listen to the rock stations, I can hear the DJs stiffen up when they credit Styx after playing a song. I can tell that they don't quite know what to do with the space when they normally would insert a stupid joke about the band, but they just give the name of the song and band and move along. No more bad jokes thank God! In any case, This band is fantastic with many different styles of music and three singers/songwriters. It might be fun to explore the differences between early (pre-Tommy Shaw) and later Styx, and the differences in voices (Come Sail Away is a Dennis De Young song, for Tommy, Blue Collar Man might be interesting, and James Young wrote an excellent song call Snowblind).

@@k-popplayinklown5473 ~ I believe when Dennis was talking about *Starship* he was meaning the ship of which they are sailing on, not some spaceship. I remember listening to him on a show called *Rockline* years ago, and someone called up and brought up about *Come Sail Away* and it being about aliens, outerspace and whatnot. Dennis laughed and said straight out, it was about *"ones hopes, dreams, and missing those days of our youth when we had those dreams..."*

Deborah Kerns I’m sure it was for him. That’s the song writing process. The way the listener views the lyric is his own. The very reason we are watching this video is to see how these reactors interpreted this song .Its also the same reason Dennis was asked that question by a listener of that radio show you mentioned. I never claimed he wrote it about aliens. I just said It was about aliens (how my 14 year old brain heard it when everything was star wars, ET, close encounter etc when it came out.)For me it’s aliens and space ships ( really just the last verse). Plus I a was kinda being facetious with my original comment 👽
