I'm agreeing also. It must be tempting to preamble with "So this next one, y'all been sayin that it's as hard as we're gonna hear from this band, so that'll be interesting!" and then take a detour for three minutes. But they DO give good analysis in the middle of the song, but not too much, 1, 2, or 3 times (a 5-second rewind would be nice so's not to miss cool transitions, but whatev, heh) and at the end. I AM waiting for the time that Che answers "Uh, no." to La's "You ready?" LOL!

This is one of Styx' most proggy tunes, kind of Yes influences showing. Another midwest Chicago area band. The extended instrumental and synth work put it into prog territory, that's when they were at their best. I highly recommend >CASTLE WALLS >SUITE MADAME BLUE >MAN IN THE WILDERNESS >LIGHT UP >CRYSTAL BALL >GRAND ILLUSION All from their best 3 albums, Equinox, Crystal Ball and Grand Illusion from the mid 70s.

KANSAS was ALOT MORE PROGRESSIVE than Styx in the 70s. Not even close. I would call about 6 of Styx' songs truly progressive rock. Kansas put out 6 solid ALBUMS of Progressive Rock in the 70s alone. The best American Progressive Rock Band. I just saw their 50th Anniv Tour just a week ago. >Song for America >Miracles Out of Nowhere >Icarus (Borne on Wings of Steel) >Icarus II >The Wall >THE PINNACLE!!! >Glimpse of Home >Lonely Wind >Belexes >Hold On >Carry on My Wayward Son and that is only a small portion of their Progressive tunes. Styx was "proggy" sometimes. Prog Lite maybe. They never composed epics like >Journey from Mariabronn >Apercu >Lamplight Symphony >Incomudru Hymn to the Atman >Mysteries and Mayhem >Cheyenne Anthem >Magnum Opus >Portrait (He Knew) >Closet Chronicles >Sparks of the Tempest >Paradox >The Spider >Lightnings Hand >Nobody's Home >Hopelessly Human plus the others above

They should go back to 1975 ... Album - Equinox ... Song - SUITE MADAME BLUE ... the song still resonates with many and probably will for many more decades. I agree, though, that Crystal Ball is one of their best and most popular. There are so many great songs, and their earlier songs are often underplayed and underappreciated.

I graduated HS in ‘79. These reaction channels (and especially yours) reveals how spoiled we were with music. Exhibit A this song. Which comes out of nowhere with its (as you say) musical theater opening and then rocking second half. I will be honest, I don’t think we appreciated the wide range of outstanding music the was regularly produced.

Dennis DeYoung keys,lead vocals. Tommy Shaw guitar , lead vocals. James Young guitar lead vocals. Chuck Panozzo bass. John Panozzo drums. Everybody sang backup The first three guys were the songwriters and for the most part who wrote it sang it. James wrote less as time went on so it was Dennis and Tommy as the leaders. This was the classic lineup till 96 when John died😢

@JimmyRJump 11 ай бұрын
Styx hail from Chicago and consisted of James Young (guitar and vocals), Dennis DeYoung (Keyboards and vocals), John Panozzo (Drums), Chuck Panozzo (Bass) and John Curulewski (Guitar). Curulewski quit in 1976 after six akbums (Styx I - 1972, Styx II - 1973, The Serpent Is Rising - 1973, Man Of Miracles - 1974, Equinox - 1975 and Crystal Ball - 1976) to spend more time with his family. He got replaced by Tommy Shaw (Guitar and vocals). Singing duties were covered by either Dennis DeYoung (here), James Young and Tommy Shaw. Their "best" period was from 1975 until 1979, covering Equinox, Crystal Ball, The Grand Illusion (1977), Pieces Of Eight (1978) and Cornerstone (1979). Later they started to go more chart-inclined with Dennis DeYoung gathering more influence in the song-writing. DeYoung was more broadway-minded (good observation there) while James Young and Tommy Shaw were more rock-friendly.

The entire "Grand Illusion" album is one hit after another. You can listen to it end to end, and you won't find a bad track on it. Lead singer Dennis DeYoung did fancy himself a "Broadway" singer. He tried to take the band in that direction ("Mr. Roboto"), and that is probably one of the reasons the band parted ways with him.

After them, I saw Tears for Fears for the second time, and Santana was touring with Earth, wind and fire. I’ve seen Santana about four times now and it was the 2nd time Earth Wind & Fire. To say that I go to a lot of concerts in understatement. I have been going since I was 16. I’ll be 62 next March. I am slowly approaching close to 300 concerts over the last 40+ years. Just saw Styx a week ago in Columbus Oh! They’ve still got it. And Foghat opened for them! Styx blended Rock, Pop, Prog. This is what they closed the show with before they encore!

One of my early vinyl albums purchase. I remember buying it in the local record store. Played the hell out of this record. Man, we were so lucky back then. Thanks so much for your reaction.

Welcome to my favorite band. This song is their anthem - check out the live performance from 1996's "Return To Paradise" tour (almost 20 years after its release). Their live versions always rock harder. This song has the slow/softer introduction that then morphs to rock out - a common thing of theirs. It is also an uplifting song of hope like most of their stuff - songs to make you feel good instead of the depressing mood of a lot. Even "Renegade" about a guy facing death is somewhat upbeat. STYX has always had 3 lead singers and songwriters, each with different stuff; so it makes for a wide variety of song styles - keeps it interesting. I guess you can say like Queen's variety. Here are a few of the many songs I could recommend: "Blue Collar Man"( kzbin.info/www/bejne/l6TXdXeqarSIj68 ). "Prelude 12/Suite: Madame Blue"( kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYDPe4N3Z9mIqNk ) "Fooling Yourself"(Album: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l6G3qpKNmt9njJY , Live: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKOnda2BhMiphqM ). "Young Man"( kzbin.info/www/bejne/bqK7hWyhbrGMY7c ). Early Styx by JY. "Queen Of Spades"(Album: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fInHYX2IZ7iFe5o , Live by current lineup: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKrLgIxmp5JpiJY ). "Man In The Wilderness" ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJquo3d8d9VjpNU ). "CASTLE WALLS" (Fan video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZmPGi6KDateYp9E ) "Crystal Ball" (Live: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5W8eWlol9Wgm8U , Album: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bImbd3mIbtaZaLs ). "Lady"(Album: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6bQqYKHnMahnNE , Live: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKWtYY2NapqIZ6s ).

@ernestpacheco8148 I think you're missing my point. That's a list of American bands that are easily better bands than Styx if you took a general consensus of the rock journalists, DJs, music industry etc along with the educated American rock fan since the 60s. And those were off the top of my head, I'm sure I'm missing some.
