@brianfoster4664 Жыл бұрын
@@petersonlafollette3521 There was definitely a gradual shift from prog to a more pop-rock and ballad oriented sound, but musical tastes shifted, and bands of that era had to decide if they were going to change and continue to be relevant or stay the course and be considered dinosaurs. Styx did a fine job of transitioning. Had they continued beyond "Kilroy," the plan was to do a greatest hits stadium tour in 1984 and record the live album on that tour, and then start on a new LP in 1985. Of course, we all know that Tommy stopped that trajectory cold by quitting in 1983, the live album was taken from the "Kilroy" tour (using the tapes from the Westwood One concert special), and Styx quietly faded from view for seven years.

Styx with Dennis DeYoung were Godlike. This was one of the first songs I ever grew attached to in my childhood this and "The Best Of Times." I wish there could be a true Styx again one day I don't mean a reformed Styx because it's clear that won't happen. I mean a band like them, not exact, but close enough to be this emotionally riveting. Maybe I'm the one to do it since this is my comfortable singing range who knows. I just miss real instruments and real passionate vocals that high note he hits is chilling!

DeYoung was thrown out, came back and gave them a NUMBER ONE ALBUM, and they threw him out again! Can't believe it. Seems the other members wanted to make more "rockin" music, but you play what the people want to hear. You can always make albums on the side. Guess Shaw and Young and the Panazzo's figured they had enough money and didn't need him. They still won't play anything off Kilroy to this day, even though many my age had that as their first album.
@rickuyeda48185 жыл бұрын
@@extremeultralightaviation - After the succes of Paradise Theater Album...Styx founder DeYoung began pushing for a more theatrical direction, while Shaw and Young favored a harder-edged approach. The band followed DeYoung's lead with their next project, Kilroy Was Here (1983), another, more fully-realized concept album, embracing the rock opera form. Set in a future where music itself has been outlawed, Dennis DeYoung portrayed Kilroy, an unjustly imprisoned rock star. Representing the "younger" rock generation, Tommy Shaw played Jonathan Chance, who fights for Kilroy's freedom. The "straw that broke the camel's back"..When Styx tried to play the "Kilroy" show at the Cotton Bowl in Texas, they were booed offstage by irritated fans, who hated the preshow play. After another show in Houston, the band decided to stop the tour. (shaw HATED being Booed..) VH-1 aired a series "Behind the music" you should SEE the way these guys loathe each other..where Deyoung says " If I say we preform Kilroy,, then .. We preform Kilroy. All the ROCKERS were there and Styx got booed.. Shaw has hated THAT moment and Deyoung ever since. Shaw, who was completely embarassed by the end of the "Kilroy" tour, made the decision to quit Styx altogether. DeYoung felt that Styx could not go on without Shaw, so the band announced that they were disbanding. The live album Caught In The Act (1984), recorded mostly in New Orleans during the "Kilroy" tour, would be the last from the band for quite some time. Shaw, DeYoung, and Young all decided to pursue solo careers with varying degrees of success.

Dennis De Young was indeed a great vocalist with incredible versatility and a unique vibrato. Unfortunately, he was on a different course than the band was, and you can't blame them for that. I've got to say a lot of singers back in the day put all their effort into songs. Technology today, like autotune just gives the magic all away... Here are some great singers in my opinion: Freddie Mercury, Dennis Deyoung, Michael Sweet.

Yes, and Brad Delp, Steve Perry, Stevie Wonder - add to the group as being able to belt it out... Going into the 80's, George Michael

Styx was the 1st band I ever saw "live". I was 13 in 1981 & I was blown away when Styx announced that they were doing a show in Regina, Saskatchewan. At the time, none of the big bands came to Regina. Anyhoo, Dennis Deyoung has such a great voice & Styx was such a great band pop band. Many, many great tunes.

Styx was SUPPOSED to be my first concert...had my tickets for the Kilroy tour and was all pumped...until they cancelled because I think Dennis broke his leg or something...so bummed but Mean at Work and Stevie Ray Vaughan became my first concert instead...

A band is not a true band without the leader that helped with putting them on the map!!!!!!!

i love styx, i wish they could have made it work. i liked that shaw is more rock & deyoung is more pop/MT. the band is more interesting that way, more variety of styles. i got to see them in the 90's before deyoung's final exit. one of the best concerts ever.

I don't know if it happened, but Tomy Show, deserves an award for led us a very important legacy on what playing the guitar is about ,he should impart guitar clases,I won't be something,people as a legacy of talent and art,who can say "Tommy Chow tought me to play guitar"
