Why this song was never a significant hit, is beyond my comprehension. I remember playing it in my so powerful stereo for my friends and they were always amazed. This song had it all for '79: voice, tune, arrangements, power..... Still splendid, 40 years later.
@TheMKEWERBY5 жыл бұрын
I second that! First STYX Song I ever heard. Because it is the first on Cornerstone, the first of their albums I ever listened to in 1993 or '94. My brother had left a cassette of it behind when he'd gone away to school some years earlier. And I immediately thought it was quite a splendid song, as well. I have been a devout STYX fan ever since and have seen them perform live 3 times now, while my said older brother never has.
@Deborahtunes4 жыл бұрын
Because A&M never released it as a single back then. In those days, unless a song was put out on a 45, they rarely got airplay, except maybe on AOR stations. But even then, Styx had such a hard time getting radio to play anything from them. It would have been difficult for a song such as *"Lights"* to be played much either way. I've always felt that A&M was biased as to who they promoted more in Styx. 95% of the time it was Dennis's songs, regardless of what they were. Tommy got a small portion of promotion, and JY didn't get any at all...
@bobdavis48484 жыл бұрын
@@Deborahtunes Deborah, there is a lot of sense to all you say. I'd just add that this great song "Lights" was a single in Germany, where it reached #35. I suspect the reason it was not a US single was the pause before the first vocal and because of Journey already having had a major radio hit with a different song of the same name.
@Deborahtunes4 жыл бұрын
@@bobdavis4848 ~ I have to disagree on the reason being the same song titles. If you look at the song title *"Lady,"* it's been done many times by different artists over the years. These are just a few examples: 1) *Lady* Styx (released in 1973 - charted at #6 in 1975 on billboard) 2) *Lady* Little River Band (1978 - charted at #10 on billboard) 3) *Lady* Kenny Rogers (1980 - charted at #1 on 4 different billboard music genra's) 4) *Lady {You Bring Me Up}* The Commodores (1981 - charted at #8 on Billboard) As you can see, everyone of these songs were pretty big hits for those bands/artists. I really do believe it was because of both A&M's, and the American radio station's biases, that Styx's song *Lights* didn't get played/promoted as a single. Coincidentally, Journey's *"Lights,"* the track only got to #68 on billboard's charts during the single's 1978 release. It was probably because of our AOR stations playing it so much that the song became a hit with the fans years after the original release. But the top 40 stations never touched it, and the studio recording never got any higher on the charts here in the US. Although a *live* version of *"Lights"* put on a box set in 1993 reached #30 on the adult contemporary charts...
@bobdavis48484 жыл бұрын
@@Deborahtunes Hello Ms. Deborah 78, nice to see you here. The first and main reason I gave why I think A&M chose not to release Styx’s “Lights” as a single in the U.S. was the fade then silence just before the first vocal. Having worked in commercial radio for many years, I knew very well the paranoia program directors have about even perceived false endings and dead air, especially literal. They are scared to death that the silence will make listeners change stations. They take their song intros talk ups very seriously, writing out for DJs how many seconds, even breaking it down into multiple seconds number listings if the intro gradually builds up (examples: One 2 Many's "Downtown," Boy Meets Girl's "Waiting For A Star To Fall") Silence could fluster a busy DJ and make her or him spontaneously cut away from the song when it comes too early. I know where Journey's "Lights" peaked; it got so much airplay that people over the years have been surprised when I've told them it peaked that low on the pop chart (they hadn't gotten their pop radio singles momentum going well yet). Having been a weekly listener of the “American Top 40” radio show, I am familiar with all the other "Lady" related songs you listed, and I own each, too. But of those performing acts, only Styx was an AOR (album oriented rock) act in radio terms. The others were MOR, country and R&B (and then came The Whispers' "Lady" also top 40 pop and higher R&B...)... It was played plenty on San Francisco Top 40 stations like KFRC, probably partly due to its lyrics referring to wanting to get back to his “city by the bay.” Anyway, Journey’s “Lights” was getting increased AOR radio airplay at that time due to Journey’s pop radio and Top 40 inroads with “Lovin’ Touchin’ Squeezin’” and “Any Way You Want It.” Styx and Journey appealed to much the same target audience and corporate AOR radio format staple, and I suspect A&M was also afraid of somehow the songs getting confused or conflated in some listeners’ and buyers’ minds if Styx’s “Lights” was a single. I am not ruling out that there could have been a third reason relating to some sort of bias…But what bias did you mean?

+Freyja11331ify A power metal band, Hmmm. Well, Anyone who plays music of any kind has musical influences which propels that person to play what they like. But to answer your question, I would say no. Dennis's ballads and show tunes have softened the band to the point that people stopped taking them for a serious rock band anymore. They had become more of a pop sound due to Dennis's musical ideas. But don't let that discourage you from looking at Styx as an influential band. They are all still great musicians and have good creativity, especially since they let in Lawrence Gowan, who replaced DDY. Without Dennis pushing his ideas forward, this change has allowed Styx to get back to their roots. Which initially was more progressive rock. I hope that answered your question. Thanks for asking.

I don't know how old you are but many TV shows, especially in the 1960's-80's had the guest artists lip sync, like the long running series "Solid Gold" and many others. It's for the TV audience not the crowd there, and when a single is new they want the audience to get used to the recording and to buy it. Once it's famous then the artists will take license with it and stylize and vary it when performed live.

Of course they're lip syncing to the original recording here. They weren't given a choice. ALL the bands did on these kinds of shows. One episode might have 4 or 5 different bands perform -- there's no way to get the sound wired up and mic'd and properly mixed for each one of them. Even now, bands get an hour's soundcheck to play on Letterman or Fallon. Big deal, there's lots of footage of this band KILLING IT live throughout the years. Lip synching back when this was filmed had nothing to do with a band's talent or ability to pull it off in live performances. It was the simple logistics of running a TV show.
@DSilvergun9 жыл бұрын
Robert Wright Sounds like a cop out. They should have played it live. They were certainly in a position to demand it.
@esroberto19 жыл бұрын
Why would they? Why be the only band screwing up the production schedule of a show that already had everything in the can? That'd be stupid. Who's to say the show was even set up for playing live and could've done it in the first place? TV production was a completely different thing back then. It was advertising, not art. These guys played it live plenty. Screw this one TV show. *smh*

+DcsOrCity No, that's just the way it was back then. The only show doing a lot of live material was Midnight Special, and even all their shows weren't live.

+Deborah Kerns Correction, not all Midnight Special's artists performed live. That's what I meant to say.

That's exactly right. If they had two musical guests that had big bands, i.e. Doobie Bros and Earth Wind & Fire, they just didn't have the capability to accommodate both bands' sound requirements. That didn't happen often, fortunately. But all these other shows figured no one would notice, and lip synching cut the budget for the show down to half, so...

Sounds very close to the studio version.

DcsOrCity Some performances are lip-synced, that's why.

Dan S. That's because it is the studio version. This was a taped show done in front of a live audience. Back in those days many shows did it. American Band Stand, Midnight Special (sometimes), and others in that time period.

I don't think that this is a lip sync so much as it is them performing live but the audio being the studio version

Well if it is a lip sync, Tommy messes up at the end lol

It's lipsyncing, but they had to during these types of shows... It's just the way things were back then...

That's funny. They are unplugged and playing to the original track. You can hear the laughing and talking in the background around 3:02 that is on the original track. Too bad.

This was definitely lip synced. Near the end of the song on the original recording, the one playing, he sings the lyric watch me play. Here, he looks like he says “let” me play. (3:38) So this was lip synced. I don’t know why they would have done that. They don’t need it at all.

Ok, HELLO MORONS! Read before you text! It was a tv show, they had to lip sync, but I agree it is kinda dumb to lip sync to a song that fades out at the end......

That's the way it was done back then. Most television shows didn't have the budget, or the time to do live concert performances when they had multiple acts performing in one episode...

Their record label wanted them to be on the show. In order to be on the show they had to lip sync. Things are different today then they were back then. I'm sure given the opportunity they would have liked to play live but when you're on a whirlwind tour of Europe and doing press and promotion in between live gigs, you kinda just do what's been lined up for you.
