Yeah, the new gems are in a tough spot. I understand Steven's point: gems basically do a single task for their whole existence and now they are doing something similar. On the other side, Steven did literally assign random jobs with no thought about the gems' skillsets/personalities which was a terrible idea

The two are basically facing the same problem -- their natural inclinations and skillsets served them very well for most of their lives, but in this new environment they're holding them back and causing problems. Very often, the difference between a character strength and character flaw is just outside context.

i love that he had this encounter with jasper. he thought she was doing this because she was still sticking to old ways just out of habit. it never occurred to him, that she likes fighting, sparing with a strong opponent aone is enough to make her happy. that's what she wants to do with her life, to be happy and enjoy her self by fighting. it doesnt have to be meant as war or anything bad at all. its just like when amethyst was wrestling. I think she'd make a good teacher if she's able to get over her 'you are what you emerged as' complex. I'm just imagining Peridot having a discussion with her about teaching: "It's like being a kindergartner, but you get to make the changes after they've emerged and see them happen in real time! You can help us build some new big, strong soldiers, like you!" Then Jasper brushes her off and walks into the ocean, and there's a military threat near the end of the season and Jasper just shows up out of nowhere with this huge regiment of battle-ready gems who reveal they'd all been taking lessons from her but hadn't told Steven because it would be awkward.

Yes, the jobs they have in town might be identical to their duties on Homeworld. But the truth is...in terms of the latter; Gems never CHOSE those duties, they were just given them the moment they appeared. What Amethyst is doing is introducing ideas that seem to slightly represent their old Homeworld posts. But instead of being forced into them, she's allowing them to try those jobs out and decide them own their own. At least, that's how I see it. Thing is...Steven's whole life has been about people wanting him to be what THEY wanted. But has he ever had the chance to decide that for himself?

I feel like a good example is Bismuth They were builders. And our Bismuth still built after rebelling, she simply took that strength in a different direction. Some of the jobs these gems were given seem to have chances for creativity, allowing them to find something for themselves

It's also worth noting that gems live a very long time; these people have spent their whole lives either not questioning their roles or being thrown onto the losing side of a war for it, and from their perspective they might as well have woken up in a new and different world that very morning. Maybe an ice gem will find that they love flying planes... but she's probably not going to find that out if you force her to try it right away. Existing in this world without direct orders is already outside their comfort zone; they need time to adjust, using skills they're comfortable and familiar with by their own choice, before they try to decide whether they want to branch out into unrelated things or not -- and given the lifespan of a gem, that could take a LONG time. Sure, you'll get a few like Pearl or Laramar, willing to jump into something new very quickly, but most of the gems will probably end up like Bismuth, using their familiar skillsets in ways they choose.

I think part of Steven doesn’t want to be done. I think just as part of him was eager to have his happily ever after in the movie, another part of him feels directionless without a conflict, without people he can help. Which, in turn, manifests as almost control-freak levels of needing to take over a situation. Also, ahem, yes, *Larimar is my new favorite.*

I have always related to Amethyst the most. [She is my birthstone fir crying out loud] but this made me cry. Theory: Little Larimar said she did ice sculptures on homeworld, but didnt explain what she did during her time on earth/during the rebellion. She was the Ice Monster we saw in the first season and apparently was set to protect the Shooting Star from getting in the wrong hands. I believe Larimar likes screams because ice caverns and wind passing through tend to make whistling shrieking sounds that can mimic people screaming and perhaps thats all she really had as she was found alone in that ice cave. Otherwise it was funny how she seems so delightful and pleasant but then is very creepy at the same time! Love that Snowflake Obsidian is voiced by Ian! I wonder if that was planned the entire time.

One thing I found interesting from the second episode was that Steven wanted everyone to find jobs totally unrelated to their original purpose, but by doing so, he was sort of fulfilling his original purpose as a diamond? He gave everybody a new post and told them what to do just like a leader would, so its almost like he’s subconsciously fulfilling his purpose as well, which i found interesting

I really liked this episode. A few days ago, I was talking with my siblings about how Little-Homeworld gems would find their place in human society and I told them that freedom didn't necessarily mean going against your nature, that it was alright to love doing what you were meant to do as long as you were free not to. It's having the choice that matters. I really hoped the crewniverse would talk about it... and they did!

Am I the only one who was really irritated by Steven’s attitude throughout these first four episodes? First with Jasper, I mean she’s a warrior with no war to fight, and Steven constantly reminding her of that and asking her to move on is like rubbing salt in an open wound. Then with the Home School Gems, I appreciate that he wants them to feel free to try new things, but forcing them to try new things is just another way of controlling them. Then with the other Rose Quartz (which kudos for bringing them back Rebecca Sugar, I had completely forgotten about them 😅). Rather than be honest about his feelings Steven tried to force things to be a certain way, and just made literally everyone uncomfortable in the process, and then...Volleyball.......I mean Jesus Christ no wonder Rose never reciprocated Pearl’s feelings and kept her friends at a distance. It also makes a lot more sense why she had such difficulty forming a genuine relationship even after 5,000 years. I should say that I’m really happy that Volleyball and Pearl were able to bond over shared pain, if it’s going where I think it’s going, I couldn’t be happier for both of them 😌❤️ but Steven....dude....it’s like he has a pathological inability to deal with anything regarding his Mother, and it almost got his friend rejuvenated all over again. I feel like things that were foreshadowed in What’s Your Problem and Mindful Education are finally coming to fruition. The war is over, the Earth is safe, the Crystal Gems are free, but Steven keeps looking for a new problem to solve so that he can keep putting off dealing with his own issues. His biggest issue being the fact that he and his mother are a lot more alike than he’s willing to admit. We know this because literally everyone has said so since the start of the show. Bismuth: That’s exactly what she said... Pearl: Sometimes...you even sound like her. Garnet: Like your Mother, you seem to have a little more patience than the rest of us. Blue, Yellow, and White Diamond: 🎶you know what it meant to love her, and you remind us so much of her🎶 I’m not saying any of this is his fault, he’s led a pretty f**ked up life all things considered. What I’m saying is that unless he faces the truth and learns to deal with his issues, he’ll never be able to move forward. Like I don’t know about any of you, but I’m ready for him to have his Good Will Hunting moment. “It’s not your fault Steven, it’s not your fault!”

I'm rewatching everything your reactions are my favorite. I just found out the other day that I'm basically going through the same thing as steven. I mean my physical therapist after realizing everything we were doing wasnt helping he looked at me funny and said I'm going to ask you some personal stuff how was your childhood? My childhood wasnt great I went through and seen things no child should so after all the he tell me do you understand pain and how it works of course I do . And he says because of your past your brain is sending signals to your body to react as if your constantly in danger or it's always the end of the world so my nerves are going haywire especially in stressful situations. Instead of glowing pink and swllening up . All of my past trauma has caused me so much pain and theres nothing I can do about It now I have fibromyalgia now I have scoliosis and lupus all from my horrible childhood all because my mother couldn't be a real mother now this is what I live with . I'm getting help and I'm learning now how to turn off my brain as my therapist puts it but I just wanted to talk to people who would get what I'm saying right now because my physical therapist doesnt get the connection at all

I think Steven’s power amplifies other gems powers, Amethyst can do the fast spin dash, and they did it as smoky, so their fusion got so fast time slowed down. Maybe with Pearl, Pearl is very precise and smart so maybe Rainbow will get special analytical skills, like they can solve things super quickly, do simulations if plan in their head or aim super precisely? I’m not sure about Sunstone though.
