Good luck in Valencia! Come on 2:19:59! Fingers crossed for easy travel and a no Omicron related nonsense. I'm continually inspired by the Sweat Elite videos and the athletes and coaches they feature, Matt included! I'm 38 and started running in February this year (initial "run" was 2.74km in 19 minutes - nearly killed me). I don't know... I got fixated with it, dropped 25kg, stopped drinking, started to feel good, stopped smoking, felt better, saved some money as a result, spent it on bouncy trainers and shorts that don't chafe, started stretching to facilitate the running, started eating better, started eating a plant-based diet (more or less), felt less guilty, felt less hungover and knackered and bleary, found work to be easier... I don't know... it is kind of like my life has started to spiral into control thanks to running. Now I'm training to run a marathon in less than four hours in February 2022 to celebrate my "Run anniversary", with the ambition of running PB marathons throughout 2022 until I hit upon a sub three hour marathon in 2023. The Sweat Elite videos and athletes are a source of inspiration. The trick is not to watch them on a "Rest Day" because before you know it I'm slipping on the bouncy trainers and heading out on an unwise, unplanned run.

Matt is very humble in how he talks about his own running, but if he goes sub 2:20 in Valencia tomorrow he will be placed at least within the top 795 marathon runners in 2021 (current 795th position is 2:19:59). If you were the 795th best person in the World at a lot of things, doing that thing would make you a millionaire or famous or both. I'm guessing the 795th best dentist in the World has a large house (and so on). But how do you (Matt) square that with the Elite content with runners who are / have been slower than you? I love Luis Orta's content, especially the Iten series that was made around him. It was amazing! And I hope it drives a lot of traffic towards his coaching business. But Luis and Matt are on a similar kind of level for marathoning. Luis has been to the Olympics and so on, but he ran 2:27 in Rio (2016), 2:33 in London (2017), and then 2:16 in Germany (2018). Luis is a professional athlete and Matt thinks of himself as a recreational runner... but if they raced the result would likely be a coin toss. Has Matt ever considered becoming a citizen of somewhere that would enable him to be an Olympic athlete? You're right on the cusp of being faster than the fastest marathoner in a whole bunch of countries. If you could do nothing but train, how much quicker could you go?

Haha, 2:20 is "sub elite". It might not be elite in Boulder, but that'll win a lot of local marathons across the country. It's all about perspective. Don't worry Matt, you're a hell of a runner. By the numbers, I think more people would be able to "relate" to someone trying to break 3 hours rather than 2:20. So if you're ever in the Northeast this winter, let me know because i'll be working hard to try and break 3 in Boston in April.

Your stride length is insane. I have never seen such a slow, yet powerful stride, your HM pace looks much slower than it is :D Do you think that might have contributied to your injuries? You probably strength train though, I would guess... for me I think stride length is my weakness, I can run a 38min 10k, but my cadence is way above 190 and I'm 178cm :D it looks so totally different from your running form. I run the same way with shoes like I would barefoot even though I wear brooks ghosts :D I'm starting to do more strength training again and hill sprints to become more powerful.

Elite is a subjective term. 2:20 is very fast, but not good enough to make the Olympic trials. 2:11:30 is the Olympic standard, so most would consider that world class. Is world class faster than elite?
