Congrats Tanner. I love the old wheeler dealers show. Edd one of the hosts was doing chassis restoration and in England they have a chassis dipping service. Removes rust and then they galvanized it. You should dip the chassis and then seam weld her lol.

Super Stoked for this build brother!!! Gears and Gasoline has a good video on installing a carbon fiber roof on a newer STI they had to jump through some hurdles to get the roof to be water resistant but they got the job done. As someone who does wiring harnesses merges, I’d do a wire tuck now. The factory ecu and harness can have a lot of unused wires that can be cleaned up and or repurposed. Merp mod uses the tgv input for flex fuel sensor and also other functions if your good with hex code… but basically none of the tgv plugs on the factory loom don’t need to be there. I rerouted to the ethanol sensor for logging and blending in the merp mod. And tucked and hid every wire in process of the merg.

Yo get a needler attachment for your air compressor - it makes removing surface rust and gunk 100x easier than any sort of hand sanding, wire wheel, etc.

Actually he did pretty good, most of these in this condition are rusty on the quarters and gasp other places. For a northwest car, this is actually a really nice starting point for the money. My Subie master mechanic paid 3k for a rust bucket!

I love the pre facelift interiors. So I did 2 pre 95 swaps. First one was back in 2016. Did a ej205 swap with the jdm forester 4.44 5 speed trans and wrx suspension. The one I’m on now is 94 04 STi swap. Motor and drivetrain. Didn’t wanna do 05 because of immobilizer stuff. Upgraded to 5.114.3 for more wheel choices. Both of these kept my original GC interior. The 3rd one will probably be a wrx swap again but I wanna do a complete interior swap. Maybe my 4th one I’ll follow what you do with this.

Don't get rid of the sunroof! Also, make sure you remove the door guards and weld the holes flush. Looks so much cleaner.

@@Smeedia lame! When you get to paint. You should use the older version of the wrb blue. Around begining of 2000's they slightly changed the paint without changing the code I think? It was closer to a royal blue iirc.

Now it will cost you $8-10k. parts have gone almost non existent too and stuff that are showing up are sky rocket. my jdm cluster was $150 now its $550-600. door cards were $50 now 3-500.. Still not as bad as fd stuff. When I got this the fd was $12k in good shape. now they $45-60k

Just kinda scrolling through to the rust, this doesn’t look too bad. Patch panel on the rear quarter, and then some wire wheeling/sanding with rust reformer on the A pillar would take all that away. Being from the midwest, seeing a 2.5RS coupe this clean makes me super jelly, you found a nice one for the most part compared to some of the ones missing quarters & rockers here. My 05 FSTi swap has got it starting in the strut towers atm, perfect time to need a 6spd rebuild, it’s down anyway😊(I miss my car🥲)

For where we’re at this is pretty bad but east coast cars are sooo much worse! The A pillars and battery tray are by far the worst of it. Tbh I don’t even think I’ll patch the rear quarter since it’s getting a wide body. Just cut and clean 😅 Thankfully we got good shock towers 🙏 Get the FxT going again 🥲

How do you not destroy the pinch welds in the corners? In the video, even your lift was on the pinch welds. So what makes them collapse?

When people jack them up, if the jack is offset too far forward or too far back it will collapse the pinch welds. They also bake rubber blocks you can use to center the pinch weld on the jack pad 👌

That why I love East coast, they are almost a dime a dozen. I'm a 10 year auto glass guy and that rust on the pinch weld is typical. Wire wheel it, rust stopper/inhibitor, priming it is the best you can do without replacing metal.

Suggestion, dont paint it original Sonic Blue, paint it WR blue Mica (the later model colour started on the GDs). 22Bs came in sonic blue which is a bit lighter than WR Blue. My GF8 has been resprayed WR Blue and it stands out from every other blue GC/GF Ive seen and makes it a bit more unique. Also looks much deeper in the sun. Can share some photos of mine next to a mates for reference if you want. Also the carbon roof would be the better way to do it especially since you get rid of the weight of that sunroof up top at the same time. Looking forward to seeing this build progress.

I would definitely check for rust up inside the rear wheel arches/Wells where the shocks meet the inside of the tower. Most common place for rust on every subaru impreza. I'm currently restoring a v1 gc8 and found many horrors in that spot. And I don't think anyone supplies the inner arches anymore?!
