In this episode of Dirtcheapdaily, Aaron gets started on making everything else we've done so far work! In the last episode, we machined custom hubs to fit a ford explorer axle onto a bolt-on, modular wheel bearing. In this episode, we customize the stock Subaru legacy rear knuckles to fit the longer Ford Explorer axles and in order to bolt on wheel bearings!

That shot at 8:29 is killer! Love it! I'm finally putting together my wide body build video. It's definitely not as polished as the stuff you've captured with the slider. Crappy iphone 4 video and pictures but it'll be officially documented. Digging into old footage of how I figured out how to build them is a little embarrassing. I didn't know what I was doing with that first layer of fiberglass. Feels like the difference in the welding on the first knuckle and the second one. Night and day. Guess that's what a build video's got to include. Anyway digging the project! Back to editing.

Pretty impressive videos. If u check machinist or engineering forums they’d probably answer a few of your questions like the press fit one you were having. I haven’t caught up to your new videos yet. If your explorer axles work. I’m interested to see if it worked. Did you consider taking the whole rear end out of the explorer?

Ricardo Salinas how did that go? Did you have to change a lot of the steering components as in like steering column and all that jazz? Also did you use a wrecked wrx or just bought the engine? Just curious cause I have a 02 Forester and was looking into swaps and everyone says it’s a and I quote “shit box money pit” and that if you want to go turbo or actually have power to buy an xt but I love my 02 lol if you respond thanks for the feed back

I actually bought the engine from a friend who was parting out a 04 Forester which he bought with the wrx swap in already lol the engine is from a jdm import so I know Low miles . I already had gathered some parts that I would need for the swap like the dash harness , wrx subframe, and misc parts for the engine it self. I was lucky I found a local Subaru ambassador who lived an hour away who actually did the harness merge for me. He did the same swap in a Impreza rs. What I mean for harness merge he put together the wrx dash harness with my Forester dash harness together so I can keep my factory Forester dash the other way to do this is if u swap everything from a wrx in to ur Forester but then u have splice the door/rear wires for everything else to work normal. Lol any other questions bro add my IG:ricardosalinas20

For the steering stuff everything bolts up to the wrx subframe except the front sway I believe u have to use one from a wrx lol

Do it! It’s way better to drive now that it’s a manual. Do you have safety/emissions where you live?

OK, that jackass that was trashing on the build in the comments of the last episode? He was wrong AND right. You have decent geometry, but that knuckle is SKETCHY. Sorry man, you would've been better off using that 5" pipe (provided it's structural steel and not plumbing pipe, yes they are different) and building new control arm mounts directly to it. What you've done may very well hold up, but I don't think it'll hold up to any serious abuse for long. I hope I'm wrong, but I also hope you don't drive that down the highway.
