I'm a 3rd generation electrician, by no means am i mechanic. Part changer at best, and ive done a decent bit of diy work on my own cars but we bought a 5 speed impreza last month and I've fallen in love, its my first subi. This series has superb information, thank you guys for sharing. I plan on buying a used engine and building it up using info from this series, very excited. Thank you again!

as my Subaru is approaching 200,000 miles I'm looking at putting in a new engine or doing a full rebuild and am absolutely loving this in depth build series of the EJ. you guys are giving me the motivation to tackle this job on my own. keep the videos coming !!
@bardocz5 жыл бұрын
I think if you have taken care of that engine, then a rebuild is probably enough, you don't need a new engine.

I love this series so much. Thank you for doing this! In absence of a truly compelling reason to run one major oil over another, it's nice to know Valvoline supports projects like this 👍

I usually change the c slip to piston location. I pre install the c clip on the backside of the piston depending on cylinder. Makes it easier to get the clip snapped in with no special tools. Leave the outside clip last to be installed on each cylinder.
@oldleatherhandsfriends40537 ай бұрын
I've never seen it done the way he did it in the video. You always install the inner c-clip before putting the piston in.

Love this series. These boxer engines are weird to disassemble/assemble. And takes tiny hands to maintain while in the car. But a kick ass engine when it’s all done
@Sleggt5 жыл бұрын
Actually, it's one of the easiest motors to work on. Every component that is prone to maintence (alternator, belts, power steering pump, ac compressor) are all right on top off the engine ans take 15min to change. The only thing that is impossible to reach are spark plugs

The wrist pins are a nightmare to remove on VW WBX engines as you only have access holes on one side, but at least you can get to the rod bolts as the liners are removable. Porsche 996 engines look even more fun requiring that type of special tool to pop the clips in. I love the unique sound of a boxer engine.

I know its 3 yrs ago but this being my first time....there wasn't an explanation for the first retaining clip for the piston pin before installing the piston cap in the sleeve...so when installing the pin thru the rod, it flies right thru......just typing, if you have the clip, show it, cause everything else is good....

I did not see where after you file fit the rings, you did not take a small file the top & bottom side of the ring to knock down the sharp rough edges left behind from setting the end gap.. It is an important step that others may not know needs to be addressed as those sharp edges can catch in the ring land or even the cylinder wall.. One should not take for granted that that the rings are ready to install without this procedure..If you can feel a sharp edge with your finger nail on the ring after setting end gap, they need to be filed..

I wish these backyard mechanics would take a professional engine course. So many small but important things that they dont know about or just dont do. This is called a "Overhaul or Refresh" not the way to properly blueprint a performance motor.

@@NvautoCa my knowledge on Subaru engines is limited. But I heard similar things from an engine builder that does VW engines over here in Germany. he builds GTI engines that last long with well over 500hp. He recommends everyone using Mahle pistons that have a similar coating to yours. Cheap pistons tent so slap he said.

Jeebus, grinding rings, not cleaning them off and inserting them into a partially assembled short motor... Asking for failure! Measure ring gap and grind to bore size before the block is assembled and then clean everything again! The videos I have watched on this engine assembly are a recipe for disaster.

Um wtf did i just see / watch that bloke use the griding wheel on both inner flat side of the piston rings . Umm wrong you ever want to do that any person that has ever put together an engine in the right way knows that you need a straight flat side to compare /know how much you've remove from the ring, also those disc on cheap even expensive ring cutting /filing tools have rubbish disc you need a proper one like a fine stone one that is the same size /thickness plus they are smooth and flat but still have a rough surface to flie the inner edges flat /true . Also he didn't use a flie neither to remove rough edges
