Subaru fixed the 2022 BRZ's torque problem, says math | Revelations with Jason Cammisa | Ep. 02

Months away from production, no journalists have driven the Mk2 BRZ - but we've spent some time with its specs. And a calculator.
The BRZ's torque curve tells an important story: adjusted for weight and gearing, at almost all engine speeds, the 2022 BRZ will pull harder than a 181-hp Mazda MX-5 ND2 Miata - a car that is almost universally agreed does not need a turbo.
The problem with the old, 2.0-liter BRZ wasn't its peak torque - it was the outrageously high engine rpm required to hit that peak; the torque dip in the everyday rpm range; and the uninspiring noise the engine made. The Mk2 BRZ and Toyota GT86 solve that with a new FA24 engine variant - and fake engine sounds coming through the stereo speakers.
Adding a turbocharger at the manufacturer level means a cascading avalanche of cost. Had Subaru put a turbo on the 2022 BRZ, it would likely follow in the footsteps of every other affordable, sporty coupe: it would become so expensive that it would die off.
Toyota already has a $50,000, turbocharged four-cylinder "sports car" - the base Supra. (Which is also not a Toyota.) The BRZ is meant to be inexpensive, and if Subaru reengineered the whole car to cope with the turbo's weight and torque, it would likely cost (and weigh) as much as the Supra. And then, like the F80 BMW M3 and F82 M4, its limit handling would be compromised.
Watch as techy automotive journalist Jason Cammisa uses math to demonstrate that - before anyone's even driven the new BRZ - we know it'll be quicker than a Miata.

Having driven 2 of the original ones (well one was a Toyota, but the same thing) and it needs more power, but no more than maybe 50hp and a similar increase in torque. It just had that horrible wheezy feeling, like it’s own engine couldn’t quite keep up with the rest of the experience. Did it need more than 300hp? Absolutely not, it would have overpowered the chassis and made power the only feature. Same with the old NB MX-5, a little supercharger wakes it up just enough to get it going, but more power makes it way too much

@America Isnotademocracy Hhhmm, yes, limitless. That's why GM, which is the automotive company that most approaches this, doesn't offer a manual in the C8. Neither does BMyota in the Supra. Neither does Subaru in any model but the BRZ in Europe. If a company's product doesn't sell, why would they bother making it? It's futile. It's a breath of fresh air in a world where most ICE cars for the mass markets are so numb, heavy, laggy and over-complicated. I will get one when my 1st gen BRZ become too broken one day, and then pass it to my kids.

Same here pretty much, and my BRZ has ended up being a dirt-road monster instead because that 'weak torque' turns out to be almost EXACTLY perfect for off-asphalt driving. It's just enough you CAN spin the tires, but not so much you're fighting to get grip. The 2nd gen models I'm excited to see what happens with, there's a LOT of promise that instead of being a "great platform for tinkering" it'll just be an amazing car bone stock with zero complaints.

Heya! The "fake engine noise" isn't actually a fake noise; it's projecting the sound of your engine into the cabin for the track. When you turn the sound off, it's too quiet to hear when you need to shift. A lot of racers think it's fake engine noise (because of this misinformation lol) so they turn it off, but come track day they're turning it back on.

Buy a used one...shits incredibly overpriced new and super lackluster. For 1/2 to 1/3rd the cost you can get a much better and faster used car, or bump up another 1-3k dollars over a new BRZ and get a new full power sports car like mustang, charger, camaro, and many more

@@Shadow0fd3ath24 I appreciate your advice, but I don't care. It's a Subaru. The cars are "overpriced" ($29k is actually NOT that expensive for a brand new sports car) because Subarus are over-engineered. This is a non-turbo Subaru. This thing will last far longer than any American Muscle could ever hope to. Especially with proper maintenance. I'm not gonna want a subie bro's sloppy vape-filled seconds when it comes to this. I'm also buying this in Manual since that is a dying breed. In short, I don't care that I can get an SN95 for $3k. I want this Subaru.

Ed, you are right. It is much better looking in person. It looks lower, too, than in the pictures. I crawled all over it at the Los Angeles auto show (Nov ‘21). Driver’s seat is excellent. Feels like it will keep you in place in the turns. I initially thought the 215 tires might be too narrow but after seeing the car I think that the 215/40x18 size look appropriate. The fact that you have driven one got my attention because there is not one new BRZ at any of the five San Diego county Subaru dealers (Jan. ‘22). Let’s hope the dealers aren’t going to be disgustingly greedy like the Chevy dealers are with the C8 Corvette.
