In this episode of dirtcheapdaily, Aaron reveals the new project car for 2018!
We'll be converting it to rear wheel drive the correct and permanent way using a Ford 8.8" Rear differential and a Toyota R150 RWD transmission.
We've already entered the car in a drift event this August, so that's the deadline to have this thing on the road and shredding tires!
While every RWD conversion is slightly different, Aaron will be sharing tons of information he's learned through research and trial and error. The bigger picture of this series is to prove that a passionate person can build their dream car even if they aren't a professional fabricator!

You should really make it a Truck 👀👀 cut all that weight off the back and you’ll be able to slide that baby perfectly. People do them with Volvo Wagons all the time so it’d be sick to see it done on a Legacy

I’m hyped you’re drifting the wagon. I’d kill to do this with my outback. Can’t wait to see the results

Wasn't caught up on the series. You're really doing a drift wagon? That's amazing, hahaha.

You will need to make up a transistor circuit, as well as use a couple of resistors to make your ECU and TCU think the automatic transmission is still there and functioning. Otherwise you will get a CEL and limp mode. These engines are nice and torquey, I swapped one into my 1998 BK.

can these make good power reliably? Iv never owned a subaru but have been looking around at them, biggest problem is that I wanted reliable power and the EJ's seem to be Ok but also a big gamble once you go over like 270 WHP. Id like to make 300 to 350 and still get about 50k Miles on it before it needs some major help.

You can make 300-350, but it’s expressive to do it right. The bigger issue that lots of guys have is that the rest of the drivetrain doesn’t hold up to the extra power unless you have the STI 6 speed behind it.
@Dirtcheapdaily
@Dirtcheapdaily 6 жыл бұрын
It’s a whole lot easier to make 300-350 reliably with the h6 just because of the increased displacement
@Darkipod
@Darkipod 6 жыл бұрын
And I always figured this was the case, I also figured the drivetrains could barely take it, to your knowledge what comes into breaking at 350 and beyond in the drive train? Do they make aftermarket parts to address these parts being shredded? I would like to experience a high WHP AWD car but wanted something I could beat on without worrying about it trashing itself.

The 5 speed transmissions eat 1st 2nd or 3rd gears depending on your driving style. Center differentials blow fairly frequently. You can build a 5speed to be stronger, but it’s about the same price as a 6speed swap. Wheel bearings go out when you’re taking corners quick all the time too. All of this is relevant in the WRX’s. The Stis can take a major beating and hold up to it. So basically if you’re really serious, it’s worth the extra cash to get into an STI since you’ll have to upgrade/constantly fix issues in the wrx. You also start out with the ej257 in the sti instead of dealing with the ej20. The 20 can be a really good power plant, but you might as well start with more displacement.

I'm curious to see how you do the knuckle, it's one of the reasons I went r230 (no I don't mean r200) on my 2nd Gen leggy. I'm also hoping Your "August drift event" is powercruise and you get yours there. If so, I'll come Find you and we can high five and do proper RWD swapped subaru stuff.

I'm almost done swapping a wrx drivetrain into my forester for a drift project as well. I'm excited to see how our cars are going to tackle the same goal 2 different ways. I'm going the nissan rear end route and using an sti 6 speed for the trans.
@Dirtcheapdaily
@Dirtcheapdaily 6 жыл бұрын
I was debating on going with the sti 6speed, but the Toyota trans and adapter bellhousing was cheaper. I have more fab work to do, but I’m alright with that
@v_g_p_
@v_g_p_ 6 жыл бұрын
I was tempted to do a toyota trans as well, but I've seen a lot more successful subaru drift builds that use the sti 6 speed. Also you wouldn't have to do nearly as much fab work if you did the nissan rear end, an r200 from a z31 almost bolts up!
@Dirtcheapdaily
@Dirtcheapdaily 6 жыл бұрын
But I can’t ls swap it if I just use an r200. Lol That’s not the plan right now, but it’ll be an option if I ever get bored! Plus I got my ford pumpkin for $68. The cheapest long nose r200 i could find was $300 Overall this is the cheapest route (not including time obviously) and money is my limiting factor at this point. I have limited time too, but all said and done I should have it finished for $1500-2000 which is the price of an sti trans around here. I’d like to go the sti route, but I think I’d rather use the sti trans for a high horse awd h6 build. Lol There’s so many ways to do this. It’s pretty cool to see what everyone chooses. That’s going to be a major part of this series. Explaining why I’m doing it this way and that it’s not necessarily the best way, it’s just the way I’ve decided to do it.

Yup that’s why I’m excited to see what you do. I guess it’s just where you live, I can find long nose r200s for like $50 at pick n pull. But yeah good luck and hope to see your build get on some doors!
