Subaru stalls when braking hard

Subaru stalls when stopping at intersection or braking hard. This video will show you why and what to do about it. Symptoms are that the vehicle stalls violently when coming to a stop or braking hard.

Very descriptive and helpful. My exact problem is the torque converter. I tried cleaning the MAF and Throttle body and it didn’t do anything

I am having the same issue. We tried replacing the throttle body & the issue is still occuring. My mechanic tried unplugging the abs module & when the abs module is disconnected then the car does not shut off when you brake hard. When the ABS module is plugged back in the car starts stalling again when you brake hard. Also when you brake very hard if you change it to neutral it will not shut off. Do you think my issue can still be the Torque converter?

Interesting that the ABS module is affecting it. In the case of the torque converter the stall is quite harsh, like stalling a manual. If yours is just shutting down with out any harsh stalling, there could be another issue. You could try finding an automatic transmission specialist, who would know what a locked up torque converter feels like.

what's going on that causes the torque converter to not let go? Can changing trans fluid help? I'm having this issue on an 05 outback

I think it's in the torque converter itself, best to speak to your local Trans specialist they will know more about it. A Trans fluid change won't help sorry.

what about when at a stop and you pump the brakes hard? This is when I get a stall. Brake vacuum problem?

Yes I'd be looking for a vacuum leak in the booster, or even somewhere else in the inlet system.

Brake booster is a possible cause, but this is a harsh stall, like stalling a manual because the clutch isn't in. This one is the torque converter, but we did consider the possibility of a brake booster issue.

How are you telling me I'm repeating myself? The video doesn't repeat itself it explains in detail, how to tell which issue is causing your stalling. If you don't understand what is being explained, take your car to a mechanic, but I suggest you drop the attitude before you go, otherwise you'll get told where to take it. The issue in this case (as explained in the video) is the torque converter not releasing from lock up. The other possible causes of stalling are explained in the video also.
