I think people don't give Subaru enough credit. He's not a hero. When he dies, it hurts. When he sees people die, it traumatizes and rattles him. I think he's the most realistic protagonist for a show like this. He uses return by death to gather bits of information every time he dies. He's not a trained soldier and his nerves aren't really made for the thing he's called to do. I love that about him personally. The tendency towards selfishness is a natural response for him. Learning to overcome that is a genuine arc of growth.

It's a shame in a way, because while it's totally in character for Subaru to act the way he did in the Throne Room, if he'd claimed to be an *aspiring* knight, either outright or backing off that much at least when pressed by Julius, I think he'd have gotten a fair amount of credit from at least those in the room who were more sympathetic to him for admitting he isn't quite there yet.

It really irks me when people call Subaru a dumbass. Most of the times in the story when he is not able to figure things out, it's not because he is an idiot but because of the mental stress and his own psychological delusions about being someone particularly special, being unwilling to face reality as it stood. We, as audience, don't suffer the same trauma that he does and so we can think more logically. That's why we are able to see things that he doesn't immediately do but that doesn't give us any right to just ignore his suffering and call him a dumbass. He's by no means a genius but he's also not an idiot. He's just someone whose mind works very realistically and that's something to praise his character for and not bash him for it.

People have such unrealistic expectations of subaru One of my friends who didnt particularly like the show said subaru shouldve just kept fighting elsa in order to train himself, and that he would "get used to dying" Do people not understand how painful dying is? Having your stomach cut open hurts a lot and the fear almost dying instils in you is something that cant be ignored.

to be honest I love subaru as a character. He's useless, selfish and down right the exact representation of how a person would react in those situations. We all talk about how he could've done sooo much to change anything but the truth is trauma and the fact of being put into such a horrific world that we couldn't compare to earth puts you in a state where it would be near impossible to understand it except over a long period time which is shown in the show. I really enjoyed this video, it was great watching it describe and explain how things were and could've been down. Keep the vids up pls!

Subaru is my favorite anime protagonist. He’s the only anime protagonist that ever actually triggered self-reflection in me, and I love how he is rewarded by overcoming his shortcomings. My favorite thing about Re:Zero’s ending is something I’ve never actually heard anyone talk about, so I’m going to real quick. In the scene, the changes Subaru has made are readily apparent from the fact that he immediately begins asking if other people are okay (after complimenting the lap pillow, of course) and how, despite his joking goofball nature still being there, there’s a newfound maturity in his mannerisms. This continues as he admits his shortcomings, followed by a statement that he really does want to save her. When he says it’s because he loves her, she begins to point out all of the reasons people hate her, he dismisses them all and does what he can to both comfort her and dispell her self doubt. This is a reversal of roles: across the series, we see him being a vulnerable fool and her being mature and comforting him, so having him do the same to her here both helps him pay her back for everything she’s done for him and showing how much he’s grown. I’m sorry for posting an analysis of this scene in an analysis of something else. I just don’t see enough people actually dissect this scene, and I think it deserves more appreciation. Also, Emilia is best girl. Fight me.

This causes the same effect of being erased by the White Whale, except eating a person's name and memories leaves the body of the victim behind. This means that no one except Subaru and Beatrice remember Rem even existed. i.e. Everyone but Subaru and Beatrice just see Rem in a Sleeping Beauty-like state and go, "Who is this person that looks like Ram?". This is treated as an incredibly traumatic and tragic moment for Subaru - and it hits a lot of viewers too because the story spent most of the Sloth loops building up the relationship between Subaru and Rem. So while the joke was clever, I also feel a tinge of regret at laughing at the characters' misfortune.

That last eye contact between Subaru and Geuse was a truly badass moment. Subaru as a person has inferiority complex and deep down blames himself for all the bad things happening around him. Geuse was probably the first person he utterly hated, other than himself. And that look on his face, as he stomps on the most sacred thing his enemy has - the gospel, gives this sweet and powerful feeling of very personal revenge above any moralities.

Geoff you better mention how they incorporate Subaru’s character arc of making an effort to understand someone else’s in order so they, in turn, can understand Subaru by having Subaru accept Julius as the great Knight he is so he can LITERALLY SEE HIS POINT OF VIEW. I am usually up for any amount of protagonist bashing, but I think you are too hard on subaru, at least in this instance. Hes just a normal guy, not even an adult, surely not a warrior .he has basically been accumulating unresolved trauma non stop since being isekayed, him mostly just being broken, not having his wits about him but being in obvious shock most of the time, when being confronted with carnage, bloodshed, death of friends and loved ones and the sheere insanity of the situation and the cult ist realistic, perfectly normal and excuseable. We wouldnt criticise real life civilians for mostly crying shitting themselfes and not even seeking cover in similarily traumatic circumstances, in fact its what trained responders expect them to do.

Sorry but most civilians (Are you military?) also wouldn't hope for their loved ones to have something horrible happen to them, just so their only value in life can be showed off to re gain what was lost in the first place due to their shitty nature. All that happened was he had a fight with his crush which logically would not end his relationship with her, because Emilia is not that kind of person. He didn't have the time to think that because his egocentrism skyrocketed before and after getting beaten up by Julius. He wanted the carnage, he wished for it and he got it. Which is why he runs around in pure shock saying "I didn't want this" when Subaru remembers/understands what happens when he can be useful. But his growth from the absolute piece of shit that he was in that Arc is what makes him so awesome, and it shows in Arc 4 and 5.

@@BygoneT I was specificaly talking about his attitude "under fire", not his other caracter failings.Btw I think a lot of people have at least fatasized about some cataklysmic event that woulf allow them to be the hero, without that meaning that they actually wish harm on their loved ones, thats not a Subaru specific failing. By civilian I meant anyone not a soldier, policemen, firefighter paramedic or other personnel that would be trained for or even have some degree of experience with traumatic and violent situations. Obviously training is no garantie not to break down under the stress, but without any most people dont have their wits about them at all. Yes I am.

@@julian7247 Well, your everyday persona lends itself to stressful situations as well in some measure. Respect by the way. I have mixed feelings about what soldiers are supposed to be. But at the very least, i can offer my sympathies and respect for someone who potentially sacrificed their mental health for whatever reason they thought was worth it. Whatever the reason, means or results, if you were deployed i want to pay respects to any positive thing you might have done, even for yourself only. What you said about fantasising actually made me go around asking others about it. I counted 2 for now, i'll keep asking out of curiosity though. That being the case, i will concede it's not that unusual for someone to daydream about being the hero or whatever. But since Subaru is laid naked to us as the audience i'll have to disagree still. He doesn't have that sort of innocent vibe, in fact in the LN his grins are flat out described as twisted, or dark smiles, or otherwise not out of benevolence. He wants something he unconsciously knows is bad to happen, because it us the only way he was able to show his worth at all in that world, and probably in the previous one too. He knows that much at least. Without spoiling anything, Subaru is not a healthy person at all, and i like him even more precisely because of the way he is abnormal. I also don't know how common his shortcomings are in teens (Without spoiling i can't say too much but believe me, Subaru is not just some random troubled teen with an inferiority complex, insecurity and social dysfunctions. He can be VERY fucked up, much more than he ever showed in Arc 2), in any case i can agree with not blaming him too much about the shock and struggles. What i can't agree with under any circumstance is what Subaru thinks is an acceptable way to cope or fix his mistakes, because if his (Admittedly non canon) what IF stories are anything to go by, he is a deeply distrubed and disturbing individual, which most people would prefer distance themselves from. It's enough for me to see that he would conveniently ignore the blatantly obvious nature of what NEEDS to happen for RbD to be remotely useful. The second what IF and last one are especially hard to stomach. You probably picked one of the worst people around in matters of what should civilians be expected to be able to handle lmao. I am in favour of regular terrorist attack simulations even in low probability areas like the suburbs. Mostly because it sounds incredibly interesting, fun as long as it's a simulation, and also because one can't be entirely reliant on others for safety. I can't trust others not to be bad, because if i could i wouldn't need to lock my doors at night. Therefore i learned how to fight, and i believe others should too. If i come across someone in need of first aid i won't take the role of a doctor, but if no one else is available i believe i should be able to offer that first aid. Why should someone risk their life or other potential damage? Because i didn't have a few weeks free to learn? Because i didn't want to bother? Because when would i need it? Ridiculous. I think everyone should also know how to administer first aid. Probably the most radical view of mine is that the average person shouldn't falter at the darkness of humanity. Terrorists, murderers, rapists, pedos, human traffic(ers?), child soldiers, child brides, child prostitution, kidnappers, arsonists, anything from light to heavy crimes should not be swept under the rug of everyday routine. There is no way to address these issues without genuinely digesting actual real people are that evil, and they're not aliens from another planet. Every person who can want to possibly hurt another is a flesh and blood human being just like you and me. I feel like civilization tends to ignore that evil and let it exist because nobody wants to look at it, which is a sentiment i share. But it's not gonna stop if no one even sees it. Which is precisely why i love Re:Zero so much. It doesn't shy away from the ruthlessness of reality, but also doesn't needlessly step into grimdark territory like other series. The point is gotten across without turning cooking children into cash or clout. People can be better than they are, even if they're afflicted by numerous problems holding them back. Everyone can be a hero if they have something they hold dear very strongly... is not the message. But potentially, everyone can be a Subaru.

Re:zero is probably my favorite anime of all time. I've rewatched it 4 times now and each time I always come away thinking it's a masterpiece. That may not be objective but as a piece of art, it spoke to me. Subaru as a character is deeply flawed which makes him very relatable. He's so human that it actually infuriates people who don't get how understandable it would be for a young man to act in that situation. I appreciate the self reflection and growth he goes through in the first season and it's honestly one of the best character arcs in all of anime. It. Just goes to show that u can have a good protagonist in an anime without the flashy powers.

Like Petelgeuse biting his fingers to satisfy the sloth factor and get more hands / Petelgeuse possessing Subaru on the third Puck kill (I always just assumed Subaru was just going insane and laughing at himself). edit: And the fact that, when Subaru threw the gospel out of the wagon, the reason that Petelgeuse was seemingly getting sucked away was because he had suddenly exited the wagon's/dragon's protection of wind evasion. I always love knowing that a story that I though had hundreds of layers is just the outer shell of a much more in depth story. I definitely feel like it's a mixture of both. They're comedic, but at the same time they're just not right for the situation. He's a comedy character amongst a sea of gore and death and despair, mugging for the camera as he chews the skin off his fingers. Overall it really just sells the feeling of "what the hell is this guy" and whether intentionally or not, it's very easy to get caught up in what's funny so you don't have to focus on all the deeply disturbing things on display or their implications.

There's so many details in this series. I completely missed Petra's recognition of Subaru, despite the magic cloak. I completely missed that Petelgeuse purposefully smashed his own body in order to avoid destruction by spirit sword. I didn't even fully recognize that Petelgeuse truly was vulnerable to spirit magic. He was cut down so easily by Wilhelm's sword that I kind of forgot how truly useless that sword really was. It takes a spirit gun to finally finish him off. And I suppose I should add, Sloth summoning his Unseen Hands by biting his own hands is just awesome. And for an added mystery--Subaru can't see the hands when they play twister with the second best girl. I definitely overlooked that detail on my first and second viewings. In any other series, I would happily assume it was just a small plothole, an oversight by the author/animators. If this was JoJo's that's exactly what it would have been. But this is ReZero, and that probably means something significant that I just don't understand yet. Best girl is Patrashe. Rem is second, Crusch is third. Emilia can have fourth, I think I can justify her beating out Felix for that spot.

he is an idiot largely due to immaturity from a lack of life experiences and letting his wants and ego get in the way of his intelligence. when he breaks through, largely after that long conversation with Character Who Doesn't Exist, he demonstrates that he can be remarkably clever. Something about the depiction of Subaru in this video seems a bit off to me. Which is weird since it’s usually more nuanced whenever he’s talked about in the other Re:Zero videos on this channel. I think it was mainly done because he thought it was funny. To be honest, I thought it was pretty funny when I first saw video before I watched the show itself. Then it got less funny after I watched the show and came back to this video which the knowledge of everything Subaru goes through in that 1st season. So now I have some thoughts... It is technically true that if he were in a better frame of mind for the first several episodes of the Witch’s Cult arc, he would have been able to notice more important details that would eventually lead to his success. However, it wasn't his intelligence that was the issue here, seeing as how once he clears his head up the plans he and Rem come up with end up being really clever and working out. Watching through it again, I was able to track Subaru's emotional headspace during this arc more clearly, and the points where it changes. The arc starts out with Subaru being pretty arrogant and being in denial of his feelings of powerlessness and inadequacy after being rejected by Emelia. He still thinks of himself as the hero of his own important story who ultimately gets the girl and saves the day, and failing to get the first one is making him resentful. He gets angry with Crusch and Felix for telling him that returning to the mansion is pointless because there's nothing he can do. He gets mad at Rem for leaving him in the night, strengthening that resentment towards anyone who doesn’t believe in him. That resentment gets replaced by despair and shock after witnessing the aftermath of the attack on the village and the mansion, seeing everyone he cares about already dead and brutalized, realizing that his worst fears are actually true: nothing he did made a difference. He thought arrogantly that he was going to come back and save everyone, thinking that would solve all his problems, and is instead hit with the worst possible reality he could receive. That he is not important, not special, not powerful in the slightest; he is small, weak, easily defeated by forces that he’s not even aware of yet. His failure and death in the 1st loop was most likely inevitable because there was no way they would have found about the Witch Cult in time to get there before the attack. It’s part of what makes this first loop so terrifying, that if it weren’t for Subaru’s Return by Death every horrible thing that happened would have been permanent. Seeing Subaru’s false confidence get shattered as he stumbles through the village unable to process what has happened is really uncomfortable to watch, that all the people who he just saw a few days ago, that Rem who he just saw the night before, are gone. Starting the 2nd loop and immediately having Subaru go into shock, unable to get himself to do or say anything, feels way too real given everything he just saw. Yes he reset everything, yes Rem is still alive, and yes he has a chance to avoid what he just saw. But imagine how traumatizing that must have been, seeing the worst possible thing that could have happened you happen, and not even knowing why it happened or who did it or how to fix it. I’m not sure that most people could bounce back from that so easily in the real world. Subaru starts the 2nd loop in a state of absolute fear and denial. Seeing Subaru as a mostly empty shell for most of Episode 15 is disheartening, both because you can feel the horror of what he just experienced but also because you know that if he could just think beyond what he was personally feeling that he might ACTUALLY be able to do SOMETHING. Betelgeuse calling Subaru out for feigning madness once he’s been captured is something I didn’t think too much about until the 2nd watch. That at a certain point after starting the 2nd loop, whether it was before or after getting captured, he made the conscious choice to do nothing. He only starts breaking down after Betelgeuse calls his bluff and realizes that he can make this horrible situation go away. I can’t even begin to describe the number of uncomfortable or unpleasant times I’ve been in where I just wanted everything to stop and go away, but had no power to actually make that happen, knowing that I had to suck it up and do something but not being able to bring myself to do it. Subaru then goes from fear and depair, to blind rage after Rem is brutally killed again by Betelgeuse. I noticed that it wasn’t just Rem dying that made Subaru scream, it was Betelgeuse’s taunting that all of this was Subaru’s fault, the knowledge that he could have done something, anything, and people suffered because he didn’t. It reinforces his own weakness and self-hatred, except that at this point it is all directed towards Betelgeuse and not himself. He’s still in denial about his shortcomings and failures, instead blaming all of them on the Witch Cult who just did the worst thing possible to someone that Subaru cares about deeply. I know for a fact that Rem telling Subaru she loved him before dying in his arms only solidified that self-hatred. She cared for him that much that she literally sacrificed herself for him, and he let her down so hard. I ended up paying a lot of attention to when Subaru carried Rem out of the cave, talking to her like she was still alive, like he didn’t want to go anywhere without her after she said she loves him. Something about that get more powerful the 2nd time around, especially knowing that Subaru deliberately walked back into the village to die so he could restart the loop. I got a bit annoyed when Geoff said that he selfishly walked back into the village against Rem’s wishes for him to live. Like, what else could he do at this point? He’s already killed himself once before to save Rem’s life when she died at the mansion, and the stakes are even higher now. Why wouldn’t he try to undo it all? Wouldn’t it be more selfish to let this nightmare continue when he is the only one who can start the clock again and possibly make it better? After this, Subaru’s 3rd loop I believe is motivate by 3 things in particular: hatred toward the Witch’s Cult, self-loathing/denial of his failures, and a desire to protect Rem above all else. I don’t even think Emelia factored into his actions at all except superficially, as pointed out by Crusch. It was really painful seeing Subaru unable to control himself, lashing out at everyone, begging for help but unable to understand why every other party involved wouldn’t help because A) they have their own reasons for not getting involved because they’re operating on a different level than Subaru, B) Subaru hasn’t given them any reason to see him as someone who is trustworthy, responsible, or capable of doing what he himself is asking for them to do. He literally ends this loop doing more damage than the Witch Cult does, accidentally killing Emelia by breaking the rule of Return by Death. It’s very telling that the one one of these 3 loops where Subaru even sees Emelia die is the one where he’s the one who brought it about. At this point his mental state has just given way to complete helplessness, now fully believing that there’s not a single he can do to save anyone. It makes sense that his 4th look begins with him wanting to run away from everything. I guess what the point of this whole comment was that, while Subaru fucked up hard for so much of these episodes, it was hard for me to disregard him as just a whining boy lashing out at others for not getting what he wants. And while that is still some of the reason, Deep psychological scarring and that feeling of isolation and helplessness could be enough to make anyone act that way. Subaru comes off to me like a real person in a lot of ways, with all the believable flaws that someone real would have in situations like this. Honestly, thank god for Rem. She did for Subaru in Episode 18 what Subaru did for her in Episode 11. She was there for him when he needed her most, just like how he was there for her when she needed him most. On some level, I think he knew what she told him in that conversation was true, because these were all things he said to her. She probably was the only person who could help him start over and figure out how to improve on himself. Something that I realized after watching through Re:Zero twice, is that Subaru is actually really smart and perceptive. Just not when he really needed to be, when his insecurities and trauma got the better of him. And I do believe that all of Subaru’s worst tendencies are being applied by the trauma of what he’s been going through, making them even worse than what they normally would be.

His audience doesn’t hate the character, they’re mostly all on the same page that he sucks at times but rises to the occasion at the right time. How is this the only anime (as of season 2) that ive seen talk about an isekai protagonist's past It seems so obvious because it has so much dramatic potential. How does the mc feel about never seeing them? Is he worried that they probably think he either ran away or died and are devastated over it? Does he feel guilty about the fact that he can no longer take care of them when they are older? Theres so many possibilities!!! Also his episode talking about his past made him so painfully relatable that I honestly see a lot of myself in everything he has ever done in the series, and would probably behave very similarly in all these situations

I don't get why people (including you, Geoff) always shit on Subaru. Let's get the facts. He is saved by Emilia, and returns the favor by spending his WHOLE DAY searching for her insignia. He is KILLED because of EMILIA. Then he tries getting the insignia AGAIN, and gets killed AGAIN. He gets killed by the robbers. Then, Emilia doesn't recognize him, she gets mad because of a name SHE gave to him in another timeline (for no reason, just to lie). And he STILL wants to go to the loot house to save everyone. After he is done, being almost killed AGAIN by Elsa, all he asks are two things: knowing Emilia's real name (how greedy!) and asking for a job. He didn't ask to be a host (at first), cuz he wanted to learn how to work there and get closer to everyone. People might say he asked too much, but is this really too much? He needs a work in order to GET FOOD to survive. And I bet most teenagers aren't good at domestic tasks. So what is the big deal in waiting some days before he gets better? He is killed by a curse (he didn't even how it existed) and by Rem (because of a smell he didn't know he had, couldn't know he had, couldn't know how to get rid of... And has no fault here). When he is able to save himself, the one who killed him is killed by the curse, and people attack him without any evidence. He could rely on Beatrice to escape and live somewhere else, but he CHOOSES to KILL HIMSELF in order to SAVE HIS KILLER. He is able to track down the shaman (mabeast), save the children of the village and save Rem (his killer). He even cheers up his killer. And that's how he survives the second challenge. Then, Emilia goes to the capital and leaves Subaru behind. He knows he can die how many times are needed, so he doesn't want to waste his "savepoint" letting something bad happen to Emilia. He goes there. He does talk too much, despite being right about how bigoted and dumb the leaders are. I mean, really, a candidate says "I want you all to kiss my feet" and THAT is acceptable? People humiliate Emilia because of her race, and that's acceptable? But when Subaru says he is a knight, NO!!! That's TOO MUCH!!! A bunch of ADULT KNIGHTS get angry over a FUCKING 17 YO KID saying this. Seriously, grow up! Honor is about actions, not about words. Beating up a freaking 17 YO for no reason is terrible. Then Subaru tells Emilia the TRUTH. Without him, she would have either not found the insignia or DIED (and remember, if she dies, the world dies). Without him, Rem would have died, and the children of the village as well. So let me make this as clear as I can. Subaru ISN'T AT FAULT FOR 99% OF THE BAD THINGS. He is thrown into bad situations by OTHER PEOPLE, and he has to deal with them, by himself. He is selfless enough to KILL HIMSELF IN ORDER TO SAVE HIS OWN MURDERER. And people still say he is selfish? FUCK THIS I won't even proceed, this seems enough

I honestly feel Betelgeuse is one of the best, if not absolute best, villains I've ever seen in any medie, period! His totally over the top crazy, almost Shakespearean feel to him, compared with the amazing voice acting from especially the the Japanese voice actor makes him so scary the first time I watched the show. Now I can look back at the scenes from especially episode 15 in awe of the beauty of the entire performance. If it were ever possible to do it, the scene in the cave, what I wouldn't give to seeing it being played out on a stage. Granted, it would never ever be able to be as amazing irl, even if something like hologram technology (or similar) excised to make it played out in stage. But I defiantly get a stage performance wibe to the entire scene.
