Used this guide for my 2011 WRX. The high side hose comes off the side of the pump VS the top, but otherwise all the steps are basically identical.. *****IMPORTANCE NEEDS TO BE PLACED ON BLEEDING THE AIR AFTERWARDS***** I had to turn my wheels back and forth (while jacked into the air) with the resevoir cap off like a hundred times. You also have to keep adding PS fluid as the level drops in the resevoir as you're turning the wheels back and forth. Then I had to open the resevoir cap again after driving a bit. Finally it's functioning properly, but it took a while. Great vid though, couldn't have done it so easily without you.

Got to be one of the best step-by-step DIY videos I've ever seen! I'm watching this video because I'm about to buy a 2007 WRX and the seller says that the power steering pump rattles when cranking at full stop. He says the power steering pump doesn't rattle or anything when you're driving, only when at a full stop. So he lowered the price because of it. That would be awesome if all it turns out to be is an o-ring, but he says it rattles so... maybe it is a power steering pump?
@VinnieT Жыл бұрын
If the pump is rattling it could mean a few different things. I would check if the mounting bolts are loose. Have someone also turn the steering wheel left and right and check how the pulley spins when at idle. Also if you can pop the belt off and feel how the pulley spins by hand. You should prepare to just replace the power steering pump worst case scenario. Also look for air bubbles in the power steering fluid reservoir while the steering wheel is being turned, that’ll let you know if there’s air getting in the system or not. Hope this helps!

Great video . My steering wheel gets super hard at low sleep and once I accelerate it gets softer . So is my pump bad ??
@VinnieT Жыл бұрын
Thank you, and your pump could be going bad, but also I would first check to make sure you bled all of the air out of the system. Usually you can open your hood, have the car running, have someone turn the steering wheel all the way to the left and then all the way to the right, going back and forth from side to side slowly. While they are doing that, pop off the cap on the power steering fluid reservoir and look for small air bubbles. Continue the procedure of turning the wheel left and right until the bubbles stop showing up. It can help to raise the front end a little bit, continue the process until the air is bled from the system. It should get easier to turn the wheel left and right at lower RPMs if the air is bled out fully. If the bubbles never stop then you could have air getting into the system, also make sure your fluid level is at the full mark when the engine is off.

Thank you for this exceptionally well done, helpful video. It's every bit as good as those produced by Mustie1 and James Condon, who in my opinion, have the very best DIY small engine/ vehicle repair channels on YT. Really great! So, here's my problem: I have a 2006 Subaru Impreza Sport Wagon, 2.5L naturally aspirated engine, which recently developed cold-weather power steering squeal. I replace the o-ring on the low pressure return hose, with official Subaru part number 34439AE021, black color, which the dealer said was the correct o-ring for my VIN. The fitting had not been leaking oil. The old o-ring was not broken. The new o-ring, which looked identical to the old o-ring, did not make any difference. The fitting is still dry but I wondering if I didn't tighten it enough. I know you mentioned that the high side should be tightened to 29 ft. lbs., but what about the low side? For what it's worth, neither torque specification is given in my Haynes Repair manual. Second question: Fluid in the power steering reservoir is at the cold minimum. Even after the car warms up, and the idle speed drops, it barely rises above that line. Should I split the distance been the max and min lines by adding more fluid? The only Dexron-3 compatible ATF fluid I could find locally is Valvoline MAXlife Multi-Vehicle Full Synthetic. Do you think it'd be safe to mix some of this in, or would it be best to order the official Subaru ATF? Any advice on how to get rid of power steering squeal when a new, official Subaru o-ring doesn't fix it, would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Getting ready to remove the alternator to get access for replacement of 19 year old vacuum lines and the plastic turbo inlet on my '03 WRX. Can't speak for an '06 Sport Wagon but the torque spec for the PS suction line connector bolt on an '03 WRX is 8.7 Ft. Lbs.. Torque for the PS Pump bracket bolts is 15.9 Ft. Lbs.. Vinnie T. - Thanks for making this video. Was very helpful!
@VinnieT2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! So I always recommend only using Subaru OEM Power Steering fluid, and never mixing them unless in an emergency. If you have more then one type of fluid in the reservior then I would say to flush it and start fresh with Subaru OEM fluid. As far as the Low Side line Torque Spec, if its the same small 10mm bolt that mine was, then I would say no more then 15lbs of torque. I tried searching for it online but couldn't fine anything. Now when you say its making a squeal noise, are you sure its not the belt? Usually you can hear a hissing noise from the pump if there is air inside the system. If you want to bleed the system you can park the car and turn the steering wheel all the way from side to side (Slowly) and then top off the fluid *make sure wheel is strait when filling fluid* sometimes the levels will go down when wheel is turned. Hope this helps, and just let me know what happens.
@LawrencePina2 жыл бұрын
@@VinnieT Regarding the power steering noise on my 2006, 2.5L, naturally aspirated, Subaru Impreza Sport Wagon, which: 0. Just happened to occur in winter when the average daily temperature in my zip code is 25-30° Fahrenheit. Assumption: cold weather problem - wrong! 1. Only occurred when the steering wheel was turned, did not occur as long as the wheels were kept straight, and 2. Got much louder when the steering wheel was turned after the engine warmed up... You were right: "Now when you say its making a squeal noise, are you sure its not the belt?" Both OEM belts had been replaced two months ago, with aftermarket belts, when the car went in to a trusted local shop for an ABS sensor DTC. The shop noticed that the OEM belts had split and cracked and I agreed to replace them. The car drove fine after we got it back and it's not uncommon for this car to have quarterly problems, so initially, I didn't suspect the new belt. When I finally checked its deflection, yesterday, it was exactly 1/4 inch, same as specified in my Haynes manual. But just as I was about to replace the belt cover, my neighbor observed that when I turned the steering wheel the pulley on the power steering pump came to a complete stop. Without a helper, I never would have seen this. After loosening the lock nut and tightening the belt to 1/8 inch deflection (twice as much as specified in the Haynes manual) the problem is solved! Whether the power steering noise is going to recur, whether the belt is going to stretch even more, I don't know. But if it does, I'm replacing the aftermarket belt with OEM. Thanks again for your suggestion. Hope this follow up helps someone...

Thank you for the great video. Just one question. How did you prime the power steering pump (if you did) fill it with fluid before turning the car on??
@VinnieT Жыл бұрын
The way I was taught to do it is, you fill up the fluid reservoir all the way, then turn the car on and turn the wheel slowly all the way to the left and then all the way to the right, and go back and forth many times. Then check the fluid level in the reservoir and keep adding fluid until it’s at the full level. If you can also have someone turn the steering wheel while you look in the reservoir for air bubbles, once you see no more little air bubbles, then all the air should he out of the lines. Hope this answers your question.

I see so many options for getting a new pump. Refurbished, new, some $70 some $400. What’s the difference? And are there some company names that I should look for. Or some I should stay away? Great video, great instructor! Thank you.
@VinnieT4 жыл бұрын
Thanks I appreciate the support! Yeah I've done a ton of research and from what I found, the reason a lot of the pumps are priced all over the place is cause they have, "OEM" New/Used/Refurb, then they have "AFTERMARKET" New/Used/Refurb. BEST = It gets a bit confusing but basically, if you got money, then get OEM one because that will always work the best. GOOD = Other then that you can go the refurb route which is a risk but IMO a small one considering its easy to swap the pumps. I would recommend buying refurb for no more then $150 because because paying $400 for a pump is too much for me. Plus some come with 30 day warranty to send back if they don't work. and its less then half the cost of a new one. Rock Auto has a good selection for this too.

Top oem seal has been replaced already so I'm wondering If I should replace the pump.
@VinnieT4 жыл бұрын
Thanks man, so it seems to be two things that leak, first would be that O-Ring you already replaced, and typically the second thing is the fitting on high side line that bolts the high side line to the pump. If I were you I would replace the pump with a remanufactured pump, atleast once before you go and get OEM pump. The OEM pump is the best option but it costs way too much IMO, but that’s cause it’s brand new. I’ve seen so many people use aftermarket pumps, you could replace that pump with like 4 aftermarket / remanufactured pumps for the price of 1 new OEM pump.. so that’s why I recommend a re-manned pump first. The links to all the stuff I used are in the description of the video, and if you want a bigger variety / choices of pumps, I would recommend using RockAuto and see what they have on there. Also, I’m not sure exactly what type of power steering fluid your using but you should just buy the OEM Subaru automatic trans fluid, that’s what they use for the power steering fluid. Link should be up in the description for that too. I would not recommend using any other fluids other then OEM, as you can already tell these pumps are finicky and a PITA. Hope this helps!

@@VinnieT Thanks!, I just started putting the recommended dextron ATF in. Going to look into that fitting on high side line that bolts the high side line to the pump first. That sounds like it could be Air getting into your power steering system, or it could be the pump. The first thing to check is if there are air bubbles in the reservoir when someone is turning the steering wheel slowly all the way left and right. If you see air bubbles then its most likely air coming in from one of the two O-rings (high side) or (low side)
@BasicMacik2 жыл бұрын

So again idk if it’s my hose or the pump itself since the power steering system was perfectly fine before I touched it? Could you help me out?
@VinnieT Жыл бұрын
@@jarodmiguel6271 yes I would first start fresh by cleaning everything off thoroughly and then make sure it’s dry. Make sure your power steering fluid level is at the fill level, and then test drive the car. After the test drive, inspect the area to see where fluid is present. I would then go from there. If you see fluid around the banjo bolt then you may need to replace the banjo bolt washers, or if it’s leaking from the o ring then replace that. And you should try to be exact with the torque specs because when they are loose or over tightened it will leak a lot of times. If it were a leak coming from the hose then you would see fluid sprayed all over most likely since it’s under pressure in the hose. If it’s “smoking” it could be the spray that just looks like smoke, or it could be your pump leaking fluid onto the top of the engine, and then burning off of your engine/exhaust. Hope this helps, let me know what you find.

@VinnieT4 жыл бұрын
The steering wheel may be hard to turn if you have air in your power steering system. To bleed the air out of the system, make sure the power steering fluid is at the full line, and while the car is parked and running, slowly turn the steering wheel all the way to each side, going back and forth. You can have someone turn the steering wheel as you look at the power steering fluid reservoir for air bubbles. If your still seeing a lot of air bubbles, then you may need to replace one of the O-Rings on the high side or low side power steering lines.

First thing would be to make sure that all bolts are all a little loose when threading that back bolt in, that will let you know the pump is in the correct position and will make sure that you dont accidently cross thread any bolts. If all bolts are in and the back bolt is just spinning, then either you mixed up the bolts and have the wrong one in there, or you could of broke the threads, you would have to remove the pump to check that.

I would first check all of your clamps that are apart of the system, any old OEM clamps should be replaced by new hose clamps. Once you can confirm you do not have any air bubbles leaking into the system, check the banjo bolt double washer and make sure its not slowly leaking or dripping fluid onto the top of your engine. You have to get the torque just right on the banjo bolt otherwise you risk it leaking, and trust me its very touchy! Hope this helps! PS. The main difference is you will have a different shape intake manifold so you'll just have a slightly different amount of room to work with, but you should see its basically the same setup. If you have any questions feel free to reach out, Good luck!

How different is this for the 2010 wrx?

I can’t say for sure, but I would assume it’s generally the same job with minor differences.

I followed every instruction but got confused when putting everything back to the way it was now my car is cant maintain operating temp
@VinnieT3 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a thermostat issue. When they go bad they get stuck open or closed, I would assume you didn't touch that but that could be your issue.

@@VinnieT nope found what was the issue or so i think, i think its a vaccum leak bc i took out some extra valves i wasnt supposed to aka the purge valve and the whole evap system. Or whatever it is idk im barely getting into cars. But it should work after i put everyrhing together. If you want to know more of my situation dm me @mex.juan_925 on insta
