Subaru XV Crosstrek | Oil Change w/ Fumoto Valve

Today we change the oil in my 2015 Subaru Crosstrek XV. I previously installed a Fumoto valve to make this process easier.
Oil: 0W-20 Mobil 1 Full Synthetic
Oil Filter: Mobil 1 M1-110A

No remove the oil cap and dipstick so you dont pull suction when removing the filter

Just installed mine an hour ago. Made a big mess while I pulled the old drain plug out... I'm glad I won't have to deal with that anymore.

Hi. I have a question about the oil viscosity for the Subaru XV with FB20 engine. Is the weather in your state cold or warm? The Subaru manufacturer's recommendation regarding oil (0W-20), is it for all countries or just cold?

El Socio I live in America in the North East our winters get to down to 10degrees Fahrenheit and summer can get up to almost 100F I use 0W-20 full synthetic as recommended and works perfect for me. If you are in a climate that is always super cold or always super hot then they recommend 5w it’s highlighted in the owners manual right under the oil recommendation

0w20 will protect the engine fine. Just get a good brand, mobile 1/Pennzoil platinum. They do it to meet emission/efficiency standards. But these are new engines not ones from the 50s and 60s, they have VVT and are most likely designed to work on specific oil. Changing it might mess something up(ive had it happen before). 0w20 is thin but I’ve ran it in 110 degree weather for 9 hours straight at 85+ mph during a road trip. Royal purple. Engine worked fine.

I’m assuming you made the drain “pipe,” for that, what size L shaped fitting is that?

I actually just bought the connector & drain pipe right from the fumoto drain valve website think it was $5 for the connector and pipe

How about just changing the oil before it gets that bad? You install a fumoto to make it easier so why not change more frequently, lol. I’ve gone 15,000 miles and never have oil that looks that bad.

That was a 3k oil change. There’s no way you go 15k and it isn’t dark black.

Bass Station Tv Yeah...Clean oil makes a good seal...dirty oil could make a bad one...Learned that in old school mechanics 40 years ago..

ehhh I probably should have used clean oil but not the biggest deal. I used to always use the old oil for when changing the oil filter on my boat and never had an issue. but I will take your years of experience over mine and will be using the clean oil for the seal from now on!

The only purpose of putting oil on the gasket is to reduce friction when you're tightening it. Otherwise the rubber can grip against the metal, adding resistance and leading to an under-tightened filter. Old oil works just as well for this as new oil.

@@ethanholshouser5648 well, there might be more than one reason. Lubing the gasket will reduce the chance of it fusing itself to the mating surface which could complicate things when changing it out. Just a thought
