My parents got a 2022 Corolla Hybrid which of course is FWD, but they're averaging a solid 55 mpg which is better than the EPA estimate by I think 3 mpg. It's arguably the best value on the market, but when it came time to replace my 2007 Subaru Legacy I decided I was willing to give up some efficiency for a touch of luxury and sportiness, and so I bought a 2023 Mazda 3 AWD Premium sedan. But I have great respect for the Toyota hybrids!

I picked up a '24 LE AWD in October of last year. I zeroed the average fuel economy readout back then and with the single digit temps we had here recently in the Laurel Mtns of PA the 2200 mile average had bottomed out at 45mpg. The average is on its way back up with the moderating temps. And even though it rides on the OE 16" all seasons, the AWD performance was impressive in deep snow.

@lalalal8111 Since you replied to my comment.....That's not a comparable car pricewise to the Corolla I bought, which is much cheaper than the Corolla SE in the video. You paid, what, $5000-6000 or more for the Touring? But, fair enough, my son has a '22 Civic Sport and the interior quality is better for the same amount of money I spent on my Corolla. But I got AWD and significantly better fuel economy.

appreciate the comment. I'm in VT & the seesawing cold weather makes mpg hard to nail down, as well as studded snow tires. With AWD I might opt out of getting studdeds for the first winter and see how it goes. I have a truck as backup for the more iffy days anyway. The reviews I see for this are consistent: boring, practical, etc. I just need 4 wheels to get me to work on a 20 minute commute on country roads with a bit of street traffic. I don't live in my car & I don't care if the tech is high or not. It could just be an AM radio and I'd be fine.

Winter vs summer MPG in these Toyota hybrids with lithium ion battery packs definitely seem to vary quite a bit. I have a 2022 Venza that we purchased last summer. I was super impressed with the gas mileage, because we were getting right around 45MPG. That was a mix of suburban/urban and highway driving. In the winter, it gets right around 37MPG combined. If I average out summer and winter MPGs, I essentially get the EPA rated city/highway numbers. If you were able to test the Prius now, I would be interested to see how much lower the MPG would be.
@dougrobinson8602
@dougrobinson8602 Жыл бұрын
Winter MPG also suffered in the Gen 2 Prius, even with the heater turned off. I don't think the Atkinson cycle engines like cold intake temps. I'd imagine the lithium packs fare even worse.

I have been getting around 49mpg on my daily commute to work with my '24 AWD LE. I got 54mpg on a 2.5 hour highway ride just going the speed limit (60-70 mph). I didn't want anything fancy as the goal is to keep this as a work commute car for the next 400k miles. the LE fits that bill. I do enjoy the Adaptive cruise and lane assist. makes the drive home a little easier. My LE has one of the packages so I do get a keyless start as well.

I do love the looks of the 2024 Corolla. I currently drive a 2017 Corolla SE and my car has the partial leather seats, I was sad to see the moved to cloth on the SE. My car also has 40 Inches of leg room and it was cut for the newer model to 34 inches, it also has the Toyota Safety Sense with the adaptive cruise. I would buy one of these, used tho!

We used to have our own North American version of the Corolla built for plus-sized American and Canadian people. The reduction of leg and head room with the TNGA 'Global' Corolla is inexplicable. Honda still caters models to the markets where they are being sold so hopefully Toyota will do the same in future.

Sit in a Prius before you decide... With the driver's seat all the way down, my hat was still hitting the ceiling. Getting in and out of the front door is more of a duck than I wanted every day. Once seated in the car, it was fine. Sitting in the back was a challenge - even slouching, my head was tilted to the right due to being against the ceiling. I'm 6 foot tall. Lowest tank so far is mid-30s, but that was in frigid weather. In the nicer weather, I see more like the high 40s to mid 50s without trying. At no point in my ownership have I tried to hyper-mile the thing.

I've noticed a significant difference in mileage between driving on cold winter days (41mpg) vs warmer days (43mpg). I'm very mileage conscious, light on the accelerator and braking. If I drove this harder like I do in my Yaris, the fuel consumption would be significantly higher. I've only had mine since December so I'm hoping for better mileage in summer. At -10C (14F) or colder, the hybrid battery doesn't contribute as much and the car doesn't go into EV mode as much.

I'm kind of surprised by your mileage result! My '24 SE AWD is almost never below 45mpg thus far, even with single digit temperatures. Making up the $800 price difference between the Prius at 50mpg and this Corolla at 37mpg in gas savings would take several years depending upon the price of gas. Based on all the reviews I've watched, and my own personal-use case where passenger and cargo room is more important than swoopy-good looks. I think it's harder to make a case for the Prius. Furthermore, according to I think The Smoking Tire duo, the Corolla's steering feel/response is better, and according to EVERYONE, outward visibility in the Prius is way worse. I know these aren't sexy things...but they're kind of real things and if you've got more than two people in your household, and you are in the "economy car" market for a daily driver, do-it-all machine, I just don't think the Prius makes enough sense. Frankly, I'd probably be cross-shopping/comparing the Corolla to the Camry Hybrid line-up...spend a little more and get? The Prius for me is the "no-man's land" car. Not practical nor fun/sporty enough to beat out a) more practical cars or b) more sporty cars.
@MattMaranMotoring
@MattMaranMotoring Жыл бұрын
For what it's worth, I spent over 2 weeks driving Priuses last year and had zero issues with visibility. It appears like it would have visibility issues but the reality, at least for me, was that there was none. Steering was pretty similar between this and the Prius to me, neither are going to impress enthusiasts with the steering. I approached this review from the perspective of someone wanting AWD since I assume anyone watching an AWD Corolla review mainly wants an AWD car, which is why I didn't bring up Camry. AWD Hybrid Camry is coming later this year but as of right now, that's not an option. To each their own, but I gotta say that at least for now the Prius is a hot seller so clearly lots of people like it, and the extra 56 hp makes a pretty big difference in driving enjoyment, while also being more economical.

I think they have gone way too premium. They need to be able to have a base car that’s lower towards the $20k range then have all the features just under $30k. AWD should be just above $30k. But the way they have it now with financing and taxes pushing $35k you’re then looking at the Camry.

Hybrids really suffer from cold weather. They also don't like fast highway driving or super short trips. I got 33-37 mpg in my 2012 Highlander hybrid in the summer, but I was only getting 21-29 in the winter doing the exact same 7 mile one way commute. The hybrid system is just not efficient until the engine and battery are nice and toasty. This would totally be my choice if I was going to buy a new car, but I already have 2 solid vehicles so that won't be necessary.

2024 Corolla hybrid LE AWD vs Prius LE AWD , Corolla out the door with taxes, fees $30,312 with convenient pkg, equally equiped pruis $33,717 no mark up. A difference of $3,405 higher price for the Prius. This a real world price no BS KZbin or advertising without destination and the like. Obviously, i went the Corolla's direction but let us assume they were equal in the price; here why i would still go to the Corolla. Visibility yep unless you go Prius with digital rearview mirror, you can't see behind you clearly, also the instrument is partially covered by the steering wheel, I will sacrify the extra hp for safety. Lastly, this is personal, this car will be driven by my wife and we owned 2008 Prius that she used to drive, the amount of harassment from idiots with big trucks and suv just because she was driving a Prius is similar to some hate towards tesla drivers despite the fact she never hugged the left lane so for her she refused to drive a Prius ever again.

That's not a small chunk of change. I've never met a student who had that kind of money - even working full-time from junior high through to the end of college with a graduate degree.

You should be careful when comparing mpg figures when driving in the summer vs winter. Winter fuel blends just don't go as far for one...
@MattMaranMotoring
@MattMaranMotoring Жыл бұрын
My MPG impressions are definitely not a standardized test, so there's some variability for sure, but getting 5 mpg less than a more powerful, less aerodynamic, bigger crossover was surprising to me. Winter blends only affect things slightly, along with greater drag from the denser air and longer warmup periods, not enough in my mind to drop the MPG this much. Other cars I'm testing this winter are getting closer to their EPA estimates still.
@fcnghkkc1
@fcnghkkc1 Жыл бұрын
Matt, great content but you're not giving the car an equal opportunity for mpg. If possible, do test it again in the summer where the mpgs will be at or better than the manufacturer's numbers. You should test all the Toyota hybrids in the winter for lower mpg numbers.

Hard to justify? Is he kidding? That’s like saying a diesel-electric locomotive is hard to justify compared to a steam locomotive. The railroad industry has been justifying them for over a hundred years and continues to do so today. There is a major advantage for gas engine to generator to electrical motor to wheels versus gas engine to transmission to drive shaft to differential to axle to wheels. With the former, you get a lot of “micro-time” banging metal-to-metal contact. When that piston fires, it sends an almost instantaneous jerk-movement along the drive train. Over time, that takes a toll on all those metal moving parts including the engine. With the latter, basically that firing piston sends its instantaneous power to “mushy” magnetic and electrical fields which absorb the shock, and thus put less wear and tear on the engine. (Think of the ease of banging together two steel rods compared to banging the ends of two magnets polarly the same.) Such an engine will last far longer (and more likely to stay out of the garage) than the purely mechanical power system, something train manufacturers have known since 1907, as well as Prius owners since 1997.

You seemed completely bored in this car. That's a shame. KZbinrs who get 100K cars for free advertising from the manufacturers shouldn't get to also review regular ass cars like a Corolla. You didn't recommend the Corolla? Did you hear yourself? Like all the other shills that car manufacturers take advantage of, you said we should get a Prius. You clearly didn't research the Prius because one equipped with BSM AWD sunroof etc. is not $800 dollars more. Stick to reading the owners manual to your viewers and stop comparing the car you have to other cars out of the class.
@MattMaranMotoring

Oh boy, a Corolla fan that knows nothing about me and my channel, hooray! If you watched the video and paid attention you’d hear me say I did enjoy my time in it, but the Prius is better for barely more money. And yes, the nearest comparable Prius LE AWD is about $800. They get blind spot monitoring as standard and there is no comparable moonroof, only a much bigger fixed glass roof which isn’t a fair comparison. So yes, no moonroof, but otherwise $800 more for same features and way more power. Check the configurator if you don’t believe me. As for 100k cars and “shills”, only people with an axe to grind use that BS excuse. I’ve been a car reviewer for over 11 years and have never been paid by a car company, say whatever I want, and very rarely review anything over 100k. You can make whatever wrong characterizations you want to make yourself feel better, but I do my research and always review cars fairly, honestly, without bias and with an open mind. Sorry my take wasn’t what you wanted to hear.

Usuallly i would always take a petrol car over an electric. This is the exception. This drivetrain is so unbeleivable dull and boring that i'd rather just take the electric car. It's like veerything in the engine is covered in 3 layers of maple syrup, so unresponsive and slow, and even when the engine does start making noise, it does not seem to impact the speed until about 5 minutes later. Horrible, horrible drivetrain, unless you're 80+ years old.
