i had subutteo as a kid, but of course, i had a big sister. 'fancy a game sis?' 'nope.' 'kay then.needless to say, i won the quadruple and the intercontinental club cup for years..i think i even had the full floodlights and all the world team sheets and man united 1983-84. oh yeah, and an orange ball just in case it snowed in the living room :)

I had 2 sisters. I think I got my mom to play with me a few times but most of the time had to play against myself.

Greetings from Ghana! 🇬🇭. We played a version we called Counters ball. Counters are basically bottle tops or we innovated by making square paper "players" and even designed the paper with jersey colours etc. We called them counters because young pupils also used them in arithmetic/counting. Didn't know this was also played seriously elsewhere lol!

How can you not love Subbuteo? Grew up with loads of teams and played it with my brother for hours. We made loads of custom games/tournaments. Recreated Italia 90 and USA 94 but the club teams were the best. Pleased to see it travelled far and wide as a hobby.

I had all the Subutteo stuff back in the 80's. Used to love setting it all up - laying the pitch out, goals, players, dug-outs, the stands(as well as placing all the fans in), cameramen, police/horses, St John's ambulance, food vendors..I could go on.. But the actual playing of the game was beyond tedious & quite frustrating tbh..

Remember this as a kid the pitch would slide around on the coffee table the ball always on the floor the players snapped off the base,bad memories of this.

The modern Subbuteo name brand products are extremely poor quality, but I imagine these chappies are using really expensive custom equipment sold by independent basement builders. Probably Astrobase.

I was pretty fair at Subbuteo as a kid but I could never get the figures to glide like that over such long distances. Are the bases more weighted now than back in the seventies? Or the playing surface slicker? Or is it pure skill and technique? Impressive.

The figures have all long changed now since the subbuteo of the 70’s and 80’s. The figures the pros use now all have more flatter/weightier bases, there’s no swerving no more, it’s all speed, accuracy and about blocking. I was good as a kid too back in the day, but it’s a different game now, the playing surfaces have all changed too. I’ve just started at a club and am learning the new game (for fun!), although I still like to collect the old stuff for sentimental sake.

Just polish the base of the player and they glide! Just normal polish don't buy special stuff.

How they got them to slide so far across the pitch was to use furniture polish on a cloth & buff the base. I used to play in my school tournament & learnt this technique from a highly skilled player, & it worked like magic!

Hola, le he comprado un subbuteo de la selección española a mi hijo, pero al jugar veo que las piezas no se deslizan como los de los videos que veo. Además el sonido que hace los toques del balón no suenan igual a los del video. Quisiera saber si es que hay otros modelos más profesionales y cuáles son, ya que, lo que yo le he comprado, da la impresión de ser un simple juguete para niños pequeños. Do you still have to ask the goalkeeper if he's ready before you shoot??? I played this game for thousands of hours as a kid. For thousands more hours solo, with nothing else to do, especially homework.

Modern rules are pathetic, plus the fact your not meant to have the goalie off the pitch before a shot. Not for me, old school is best

Very addictive game, this was before the FIFA games were as well developed as they are now. My brother and I played this as well as FIFA on the Megadrive. I'm old enough to remember the very first FIFA games :) Not sure kids would have the patience for this now though.
