I've heard quite a few times already about having intent when making a character or just generally anything story related can really help the process. However, I've been working on my own story for a bit now, and I've had trouble coming up with interesting designs for things, thinking I had to come up with it just on pure imagination. I appreciate this video because it served as a reminder that story telling is a medium, and everything has a purpose.

It would be interesting to see you analyze enemy/monster designs from the Mother/Earthbound series. Enemies honestly goes from a lamp or a stray dog to a Lion brutally smashed together with robotics that make it look like an octopus or a magical drag queen physically reconstructed to have tubas coming out of his face. Enemies and monsters are weird for the weird series and it would be fun to see an in-depth analysis of it all!

You make a good case for intent. One thing that comes to my mind as well is choosing the level of how obvious or obscure you want your intent to be. Sometimes the intent can be so obvious or obscure in the design that it winds up having the opposite effect of what was intended. Take for example Batman's voice in 'The Dark Knight'. The movie's overall intent was to present a darker grittier Batman to theaters. While it largely succeeded in this intent in numerous areas, Batman's voice is so obviously trying to sound gritty and serious that it unintentionally ends up coming off as somewhat comical.

I love creatures in media. Its the reason why the "mon" genre of games is my favorite. From Shin Megami Tensei to Pokemon, I play them all. Also, did you just call James Cameron's avatar iconic? Do you even know if the names of the characters and any of the creatures in that movie without looking them up? The only thing that movie is known for nowadays is still somehow being the highest grossing movie. Great video though!

Another point about what makes Alien so terrifying for me specifically is its acid blood. Imo a creature that's meant to evoke fear visually but isn't actually that dangerous just comes off as silly; you have to know that this thing can kill you even if you're brave enough to fight back, and the acid blood feature seals that horror for me in that, thematically, "making it bleed" is usually a good thing, it typically symbolizes weakness and that a creature can be injured and beaten, but in Alien, making them bleed . It's the same level of horror as werewolves in settings where the slightest nick of their fangs will turn you into one. They're terrifying not because of how they look, but for the simple fact that you can't even fight back without being slain in the process - they are simply death incarnate.

One of my favorite things to do with character design is create a creature with complete rule of cool, then correct it with color, textures, patterns, shape language and silhouette. After that for the lore I look at it and completely make it work. I can bend the laws of the world or how that creature would be able to live in order to suit the feasibility. And once I've done that as best as I can it's usually a pretty well rounded and good design. It's fun to do with toys or media that have cannons. Like Furbies!

when you talked about sully I got reminded of a dragon quest enemy teeny sanguini: looks adorable and it's fluffy but it's face can turn from big friendly eyes (big for it's size atleast) with a small smilling mouth to a face with red glowing eyes with it's mouth stretching out almost covering it's intire body with big teeth (like the size of a knive or a dagger). it's a minimal change in my opinion but it works, not to mention the fact that atleast in DQ9 teen sanguini turn in manguini wich are more human like but also a lot more monstrous. I like it and I think it's also a great example. Can you make a video about such "trap" monsters and how to design them?

An interesting factor I found when it comes to how realistic a creature looks is how much you personally know about biology. It almost works like a horseshoe graph, with intent on realism, inexperienced people accept or make some outlandish stuff, then the more experienced will have a very rigid idea of what can work but then when you've delved into the more niche or otherworldly stuff that acceptance of the outlandish comes back but no with an understanding of why it can work. Things like mold slimes, syphonophores and just fungi in general just don't behave like typical lifeforms(on the surface). Still can't get over how some of those large seaweeds are single cells.

Eh you can't really. Alien creatures are an amazing creature because they have complete liberty for art, But Nature itself only has so many freedoms. A creature needs a way to interact with its environment (hands, wings, claws, tentacles) a way to sense it's environment (eyes, ears, nose) and a way to consume energy (normally a mouth). With that In mind, it's near impossible to make a creature that doesn't ay least somewhat resemble a real animal
