We are in the month of Ramadan where Muslims worldwide share in the simple yet profound act of fasting from dawn to dusk. Our collective commitment to this activity is often met with surprise by others who do not share our faith; how can someone be so devoted to a creator, and why is sacrifice so important to submission? We in the West are often confronted with questions about fasting and Islamic practice in general, and some have found the standard answers insufficient to appease the questioner. In a so-called rational West, where everything has to be justified, many Muslims want to know why. Why do we fast, why do we pray, why is there a Shariah?
To help us navigate the topic of rationality in Islam and how this interacts with Shariah, I am honoured to have on the show Shaykh Hamza Karamali; Shaykh Hamza has studied and mastered the Islamic sciences and Arabic grammar and rhetoric. His institute, Basira Education, aims to address some of the thoughts that undermine confidence in Islam and help the younger generation observe their religion with rational certainty. He has a course currently running on why Islam is true.
You can get Hamza Karamali's FREE Quranic Case for God Video Series. Discover the Quranic rational Argument that will silence any atheist at quraniccaseforgod.com/ In 4 short videos you will learn how the argument works, see it being used in the Quran, learn how to apply it to the most common atheist objection and then watch a real world christian-atheist debate, and see how it should have been applied. Go to ramadanforever.com/ to learn more.
You can also join him on his Ramadan Forever Challenge to make this Ramadan last forever, with a change that stays with you when Ramadan leaves. A short lesson each day with a simple to implement 3-point action plan that takes only a minute to do, and a success tracker sheet to keep yourself accountable and measure your progress. My teacher once said, “Even if you’re not focused in prayer, even if you pray not solely for Allah’s sake, even if you have negative thoughts during prayer or whatever it may be, Allah will still reward you simply because ‘you’re doing what He commanded.’ You’re still far better in the eyes of Allah than those who don’t pray at all. So never think that your prayer is invalid or something.”

I think what is appreciated most on your podcast is not only the intelligence of the guests but their quality of soft spokenness. It's very wearying to listen to the shayukh and others at top volume with their rhetoric! Muslims not only come across as angry but it affects and infects their audience.

The way I would explain complete submission to Allah to an atheist or an agnostic is to make them aware that the human inclination is to submit to something, when it's clouded the human ends up following something other than Allah, but there's always something, whether a diety or other than it. Humans have long made idols and sought guidance and help from them, or even other humans whom they idolise, and sometimes they make themselves into deities in the sense that they are their own authority and they end up following what they believe is best as the ultimate authority. Allah frees us from the shackles of our own desires, of the desires of the oppressors and the evildoers and makes it so that we are only slaves to Him, the All Knowing, Most Merciful. This in itself is freedom, not slavery and Allahu alam. This is a wonderful episode, really made me grateful to be a muslim. Alhamdulillah. May Allah reward you both immensely

Dear Br Muhammad, thank you so much for everything you are doing for the Muslim community. One point of clarification-dusk is not synonymous with sunset, so it is not accurate to say we fast from “dawn to dusk”, it is not correct. Jazakum Allahu kheirun for your great work!

1.35 if a Muslim is asking these kind of Questions then there is something wrong with them! If you bother to understand the Quran and sunnah you would know the answer! May Allah swt have mercy and guide us

No need to speak so harshly brother, understand that they are seeking answers in a world that has manipulated their minds to not understand the Deen properly enough. So the fact that they are asking these things and seeking answers to become better themselves is a sign of hidayah and Allah knows best.
