It's been years but here we finally are with Below Zero Lore! Today we will discuss the chelicerate, a terrifying leviathan class lifeform from sector 0. I'll be telling you everything we know about them including visuals, behavior and locations so you know what to do, should you ever be unfortunate enough to encounter one.

Actually fish in deep dark water in real life lose their "skin colors" because there didn't any light sources and of the micro organismes that are eating their skin too. So the Void Chelicerate is kind of realistic in a sort of way ! And about their damage, it's probably because the void us considered well the void so it's like endless, so there is a lot of leviathans there. Or else it wouldn't be as fun for gameplay purposes !

You're totally right about the first part :) I disagree on the 2nd point since - wouldn't it make more sense for them to do more damage if they're constantly competing with other leviathans? (or hunting them).

Despite it sounding nitpicky, why would the void chelicerates that spawn on the surface when you leave the edge have no pigments?

@@Ange40700 That'd the point, tho: you're not supposed to last long out there, because it's an area of the game that you shouldn't be going to in the first place. The original Subnautica knew this when they used the Ghost Leviathans for the Void in the Crater area, and they didn't modify the damage that the Ghosts dealt to the player in the Void: it was the standard damage all around, making it all the more dangerous when two or three of them were present at once. The idea is not to ensure the player's survival in the Void - the point is to tell the player, "Get out and stay out; there is nothing for you here but death!"

The term chelicerate means "that posseses chelicera" in latin. Chelicera being the type of mouth part that spiders, scorpios and this delightful creature have.

nah this leviathan isn't even a real chelicerate, it's a mandibulate. also many more arthropods have chelicerae, it's not just the arachnids. but 1. it has four of these supposed "chelicerae", which I don't think I've ever seen an actual real chelicerate have more that two chelicera. 2. the game describes those appendages as mandibles, which would make it a mandibulate, not a chelicerate. this creature is full of lies :') -a studying entomologist who also studies other arthropods

Subnautica has a FoV issue, everything looks about 10 times smaller than it is and I think the void variant doing less damage is to forgivingly scare the player into leaving the void instead of killing it, which the SZ variant is for

It's not only the camera, but often the movement and mass of the creatures. A creature that big simply cannot move and maneuver that fast. That, added to the FOV, makes everything look a lot smaller than it actually is. it's the main problem with that mod for the OG Subnautica, the Gargantuan.

I love the cryptosuchus because its roar is so loud and so similar to that of the chelicerate, that it feels like the chelicerate is always a threat when inside the purple vents biome, even when it is just spinning casually above some random ravine

I personly really dislike the cryptosuchus because it's scary and loud roar yet weck and frail body, doubled with the fact that you contly hear it due to the amount of them and how far there rour goes kind of just makes you disisatized to the mood of the game and the larger cretures. And is part of the reson that this game does not have the same terror factor that the fist game had

Margeritte is really amazing. When Paul Torgal described how she was attacking the leviathan that destroyed their habitat I imagined that scene in my head. In the first subnautica I thougth she died because of the kaarah, not the reaper, but I guess not even an alien deciese can stop her.

I know right? Like, wtf is that difference between everyone else who died and _her?_ Some randos in lifepod 19 died to basic Sandshark. This lady: 1) Went out to hunt a Reaper Leviathan (and succeeded apparently without too much issue). 2) Dragged the corpse all the way back to base. 3) Fought another Reaper which followed her with just Survival knife (possibly just metal) and Seaglide 4) Rode the Reaper through the Void for miles, potentially outrunning the adult Ghosts in the area. 5) Bypassed Void Chelicerates to get to Sector Zero. Note that the Reaper was probably killed and eaten between this and the previous step, so it's just her now. 6) Creates another base and somehow scavenges yet another PRAWN suit. 7) Murders a poor, innocent Chelicerate for its mandibles, so she can better kill things. 8) Survived Kharaa until Below Zero.

I’m noticing a lot of similarities between the reaper and the chelicerate. They’re both roughly the same size, they were both originally going to be the size of sharks, they both have a reddish color scheme, they both got beeg mandibles and are both the first leviathans you are likely to encounter.

I know most people find Reapers scarier, but Chelicerates scare me more than Reapers. Maybe it’s because I’ve seen too many memes and clips of Reapers for them to be scary. But those mandibles on the Chelicerate freak me out. Just the way it opens up and flail around on their own terrifies me

Personally the Shadow Leviathans are far more aggressive than these fellas. Mostly due to their AI. They literally only target the player and nothing else. Always. They’re always after you no matter what, even if you drive them off they’ll be back very soon. They are hyper aggressive

Something pretty weird happened to me when I first encountered one of these. I was returning to my seatruck, but then I accidentally removed one of my modules instead of getting back in. Then, the chelicerate tried to attack me, so I entered the back module of the seatruck and somehow, it put both of the modules back on the seatruck and didn’t even damage anything. I think of him as a friend now.

I remember my first encounter with one of these deadly shrimp boys. I was making my way back from the huge shipwreck near Magurites base, making my way up the slope towards the purple steam vents. I heard a blood curdling scream and just kinda froze not wanting to look back but I tried to just keep going forward. Next thing I know I'm spun a full 180° and I see 4 mandibles just clamping down on my seatruck. My heart quite literally jumped into my mouth and I let out a huge Yelp. I've absolutely loved and hated these creature's ever since. Definitely one of the creepiest I've come across.

Interesting thought I had, what if the void chelicerate was actually infected with some kind of fungal infection like cordyceps? That scarring could actually be the fungus or whatever else it is and the reason it lives in the void could be because of irrational behavior caused by the fungus just like cordyceps. You could also blame the appearance of its eyes that look way different than the normal chelicerates on the infection.

my theory (that I heard somewhere, I don't remember) about why the void chelicerate has a weaker attack is because the void is cold and dead, making it hard for the chelicerate to find food. this gives them that pale look to them (almost the same color as the red variant's underbelly). the lack of food maybe corrodes their skin tone, giving them that moldy-looking appearance. but hey, who knows?

God, I completed subnautica bz in 43 hours like a month ago, and even though it's a lot shorter I loved it just as much as the first one, there's this atmosphere that only unknown worlds know how to do and it's absolutely magical, I still miss both subnauticas I completed

I'm on my 2nd Play of Below-Zero Made a Base at the Tree Spire near the Two Giant Vent Gardens. Spent nearly a day Chasing 3 Chelicerates and Coraling them to that area with my electrified SeaTruck. Now i get to enjoy watching them from about 100meters away seeing their Silhouettes pop-up everytime and I love it. ps. 3 Chelicerates are Noisier than 10 Cryptos
