So when I saw this video on 2009, I was blown away by the creation of it. So skip ahead a month later Im at an art showing for a friend [in Seattle] and i start talking with this guy and I asked him what he did for a living to which he replied "Stop motion Animation" I said" No way that's awesome. I recently saw this video by Fleet Foxes." where I then went on to describe what I loved about it and how it was amazing. and he said "Thanks, I made it." which blew my mind and the conversation went even deeper. He showed me the sets and models [that were lost when some psycho set his work loft on fire.] but needless to say we have been really good friends ever since and we even worked on a few projects together.

Robin Pecknold said this song was about all of his best friends losing their innocence. In the beginning of the song, he is following his friends which are all children as described in the song. The red scarfs are their "loss of innocence" as red represents danger and violence. When he turns around, he sees that another one of his friends is lost as he falls in the snow staining it red with blood. This represents the "loss of innocence" as well because white represents purity and innocence and he has stained it red. *"From first grade to high school I spent every day with the same bunch of kids. And it was weird to see how people I had known so long would change so quickly - suddenly they're drug dealers. I hated it. How did our friendships become less important than wearing a backwards baseball cap?"* *-Robin Pecknold*

This might have nothing to do with what you meant by your comment but it got me thinking and I know a lot of people don't agree with me, and thats cool, but personally I believe in the idea that any time you enjoyed spending is never wasted. I also think about the idea that you can't waste time because its moving itself along, we aren't. Its happening anyway so you have no actual grasp on it and you should stop worrying about it. I don't know, I'm just throwing out things I've read that stuck with me. I know a lot of people think time is only used "correctly" if its spent doing something purposeful and that people should shun mindless activity i.e. watching tv and moves. I guess this probably includes watching youtube videos. But if you enjoy it how is it wasted? Ok, I'm rambling sorry.

Almost a year ago I had my first car accident to this song. I had actually been having a bad day until the very moment I saw a sunset and was caught off guard. The car hit mine at just the perfect spot and the impact caused my radio and speakers to distort- there’s something about hearing a jovial song distorted from the impact of an otherwise melancholic event. I’m not saying this to be depressive, I’m just trying to recover from that very incident a year later. Not to say that I was hurt physically, because I wasn’t. This event just singlehandedly threw me in the bout of depression and anxiety. I’m saying all of this a year later, where parallels seem to keep occurring from that time in my life last year and everything I do reminds me of this same exact moment I was living. I don’t know what this means or if anyone will see this but I just wanted to get it out. If that makes any sense.

Actually, according to the writer, this song is a sort of a flashback to his childhood when he'd been "following the pack" of friends. But as we grew up from grade school to junior high to high school, everybody just kind of split off, and everybody kind of changed. I went from like this tight-knit group to, seemingly for no reason, everybody was kind of going their own way. That song is just about that feeling.'” -Later in the same interview: [Interviewer]: ‘The song references a person named Michael. Is that someone specific, or is that just a name for a feeling?’ [Pecknold]: ‘A person named Michael.’ [Interviewer]: ‘It is?’ [Pecknold]: ‘[Laughs.] Yeah. Michael is a great buddy of mine from back when. We just totally, I don’t know, he was one of the kids I knew from grade school on. If I saw him now, I really don’t know what we would talk about. it's about the French Revolution."following the pack" they go see the executions.The red scarves are the revolutionaries. "to keep their little heads from falling in the snow" because at this time, you are guillotined if you are not a revolutionary. Michael don't have a red scarve, so he is not a revolutionary."you would fall" he was guillotined and his blood "turn the white snow red".

I can't believe the AUDACITY of PTX fans who have the nerve to say FF should be honored that PTX covered their song (yes I saw some comments here, and that's the reason why I'm posting this). I'm by no means a hater and I don't expect most of you to appreciate this style anyway, since we all have different tastes, but can we stop insulting the original? They own the song and they tell the story better. Some covers just can't show the real essence of the song, no matter how technically impressive the singers are.

This video is so amazing, when you first listen to it the beat gets you hooked , then once the song is over it ends with the guy closing his eyes as he is old so when you go back and rewind the video to listen to it again it starts with him opening his eyes in the exact same position as it ended so in a way it's like it's infinite if you keeping rewinding the video I love how they did that

Blue xSpyder its the wheels of time and coming closer to the end of the journey of life (the winter of life) but still wanting to taste one last time youth trying to unwind time to get back to warmer times, younger times....but at the end nature takes its place and the wheels of time will continue to spin...in the video when the old guy starts to unwind the wheel they start turning back the time...they begin to look younger feel different with more energy, it goes from winter all the way back to summer time one of them even gets back what seems to be a pet that he was looking for and at the end looses it again....its a little melancholic and we all are connected to this msg and meaning since some day we will also be in our winter dreaming of the summer times.

I didn't figure this out but this song refers to the French Revolution. If you didn't wear a red scarf like the rebels you were decapitated. I've also heard that high collar coats were popular at the time, which would explain the coats swallowing people in the song.
@Neo-tt5mh8 жыл бұрын
that's what i thought
@BrennaNelson13138 жыл бұрын
+Goblin Zeus I think it's swallowed meaning their coast are so big and their "swallowed" by their coats
@sarahchicoine63288 жыл бұрын
+Collin A. I have personally pictured this many times, as young children walking home from school, bundled so well that the coats swallow up their little selves. Follow that image with snow so deep and little ones being unbalanced, I imagine the big red scarves basically wrapped around their heads so they don't fall and get cold, wet snow all over their face. In my mind, when Michael falls, probably because he's waddling in his oversized puffy coat trying to keep up but is the last one running behind, his scarf comes undone and he falls backward, and the scarf just billows everywhere as he laughs on the ground. The narrator sees the scarf and starts to daydream, imagining that Michael is now laying in a field of red strawberries in the middle of summer. The transition seems reminiscent of Olaf's musical number in Frozen, though that movie came later. Same basic principle though. I like that they left it open to interpretation, because the listener can make it mean whatever they want it to. The French Revolution is a very clever, educated guess, but it doesn't have to be morbid or gory if someone doesn't want it to be. My imagination took me to that whimsical, childhood place because that's most natural to me, as a daydreamer who remembers what she was like as a kid, and who is now a mother. You could just as easily find a completely different meaning just by watching the video, which I love by the way. The pack is young, but poor Michael can't keep up and turn back time, so now he's old and perhaps he gets hurt or dies. Who knows. It really is up to us. 😊
@thedivinemrm58328 жыл бұрын
If this were true, they'd be singing "and *Michel you would fall and turn..."
@heckkaGEE8 жыл бұрын
I found this online on a forum about the meaning of this song. I felt this hit it right on the spot BUT art is subjective. The song is different things for different people. Give it a read anyway... :) "The line about following the pack, following their coats does bring up images of kids. I also relate it to people following a certain trend. The scarves tied round their throats could refer to a fear of becoming socially unacceptable if they were to stop following the ways of the masses. Its almost as if thats the only thing thats keeping them alive. "And I turned round and there you go" could refer to him being awakened by a friend of his who was never part of whatever specific way of life it may be referring to. But then in the line "Michael you would fall, and turn the white snow read as strawberries in the summertime" conjures up images of injury or failure. But since he says "turn the white snow red as strawberries in the summertime" maybe his fall is a good thing since the imagery used is so beautiful. Maybe his "fall" is a step forward."

I am terribly sorry for your loss and the experience that coupled with it...it must've been more than heart breaking to go through...so whenever you may feel the sadness of his passing, just remember how your brother will have felt knowing that YOU were there for him to hold him when he needed you the most...and if you are a religious person, then know that this separation between the two of you is not forever, and you will be reunited in complete bliss one day :') take care friend, and your daughter has a very kind and loving heart for saying what she said when listening to this song

I’ve always loved this song, and it’s always had a special place in my heart. Today, though, the meaning changed greatly for me and became more personal. Today I went to a funeral for a young boy from my high school who died of suicide. His name was Michael. As I lay in bed before going to sleep, I put on my relaxing songs playlist. This song came on and I instantly felt at peace. Then I heard the lyric “and Michael you would fall” and was shocked at how poignant and meaningful that line had suddenly become for me, and I cried. Thank you for writing this beautiful, haunting song and touching my life with it.

This song is pure magic from its start to end, despite how short it is. It transports you to a different time and place with its folk melodies, intricate instrumentation, and gorgeous harmonies. This song, and the album that it was released in, is how I'd always remember the fleet foxes by.

You seem to really appreciate this song! Do you have any recommendations for similar wintery folk like this? I’m also struggling to find anything on its level!
@lequinntessential3 жыл бұрын
@@SeanHolden Wintery folk is such an apt description of this track; it is a sentiment best attributed to Robin Pecknold's distinctively yearning vocals as well as the band's judicious use of warm instrumentals and masterfully-structured arrangements. "Bibio" is, within my limited knowledge of such a vast expanse of music, an artiste that comes somewhat close to conjuring idyllic soundscapes with his music, but you won't find vocal harmonies and walls of sounds as palatial and affecting as tracks found in the Fleet Foxes' debut album. In your words, you will Bibio's songs to be closer to "Autumny folk". Try "Curls" and "Oakmoss". You should also listen to Robin Pecknold's collaboration with Big Red Machine in "Phoenix". Take care and best wishes Sean :)

Great speculations! Unfortunately, this beautiful song actually has a rather sad connotation. Here is what I believe the real meaning of the song is. During the French Revolution, mobs of revolutionists beheaded those (such as royalty -- I'm sure you've heard of Marie Antoinette) who were against the revolution. Revolutionists would gather around the guillotines in "packs" to watch the beheadings. The fashion then was to wear high-collared coats, which may have appeared to "swallow" the individual. Also, I found a painting depicting a beheading scene in the French Revolution. The revolutionists in the illustration wore red scarves around their necks, perhaps to symbolize their loyalty to the revolution. Perhaps "Michael" didn't wear a red scarf or did not support the revolution, and thus he was quickly beheaded at the guillotine. "I was following the pack all swallowed in their coats" -- someone was following the revolutionists on their way to the guillotine to behead those who opposed the movement. Perhaps this person was for the revolution and was a friend of Michael, or he too was on his way to the guillotine. "With scarves of red tied 'round their throats" -- the revolutionists wore red scarves to symbolize their loyalty. "To keep their little heads from falling in the snow" -- in order to keep from being beheaded, they wore the red scarves to show others that they were for the revolution. "And I turned 'round and there you'd go, and Michael you would fall, and turn the white snow red as strawberries in the summertime." -- Michael did not wear a scarf or did not support the revolution, and thus he was quickly beheaded. Hope this helps :)

That is the meaning and I think someone said that Michael is what they used to refer to the guillotine which makes sense saying that "Michael, you will fall" meaning the blade will fall and turn the white snow red with blood.

+Kylie Jackson Can you find any source for that? I tried to find it, but I can't find anything referring to the French naming the guillotine.
@kyliejackson37579 жыл бұрын
+Nutritious Cookie I did further research and Michael does not refer to the guillotine but instead refers to Michael the arch angel whom fell. There's plenty to look up about that if you'd like to learn the story. They used that as a biblical reference in the song. It makes sense. :) sorry for the previous mistake.

+Golden Noodles I really love when people analyse stuff like this, it's really amazing how some people notice these little things. I love listening to lyrics and being able to say I understand what a song is about rather than just- this is nice. Well done you've really done it properly.

***** It always amazes me how Pentatonix can take something great and make it even better...and you're right, the PTX version is sweet enough to make you cry.

I love this video! I think the message is, we wish we could turn back time & be like our younger selves (see how happy the men are, moving around when they're made younger), but that's not how the universe or life works. Age & death are inevitable. We have so little control. Also, notice how the last moment of the video goes with the first moment, the video loops! (Kind of like how a day goes to night to day to...) Life is like one long night. 1:55 is probably the most heartbreaking part. This all ties into the lyrics. Growing up & losing your innocence. Thanks you Fleet Foxes for your creativity & art!

The main difference is they created the song and it wouldn't be no good singing on Pentatonix version without fleet foxes artistry, simply because it wouldn't be a original version. Making short: good music is far beyond of just singing
@urmomlovesme8115 жыл бұрын
@@dvdso or, you know. There is no real "good music" because litterally everyone has different tastes and would thunk differently to other on what's considered "good". In short: There's "no good" music, because everyone has a different perception on what "good" is.
And every once in a while I turn the clock back for just a few minutes with this song
