I wouldn't be surprised, honestly, if they buy in bulk from various retailers (i.e. GameStop, Hot Topic, Target), the inventory that just isn't selling. That way, Lootcrate gets the items for dirt cheap, and the brick-and-mortar retailers free up some shelf space. It's just business sense.

There used to be an awesome box named BOBOS that did this sort of thing. It was legitimately the best subscription box around imo and the couple times I got it I got truly amazing stuff. Nah, everyone realized it. Same thing with Amazon Mystery packages. The only reason those were successful and LootCrate wasn't is because Loot Crate is a one time novelty thing and Mystery packages are actually useful and you can often make a profit on them. Loot Crates really have that loot box aesthetic, but ultimately they're filled with useless shit that you will rarely use and never profit from.
