how come when i do this the screws are the same color as the background? The edge of the screws alpha stops painting color and fades to teh background color. How do you paint a screw that is a solid grey color instead of fading to the background color?

That's kinda just the way this particular texture works. You could try this, create a new folder above your base texrure (wood or metal). Inside the folder, create a paint layer and add your screw. Then create a black mask on the folder itself. See if that helps. If I explained it wrong or it doesn't work, I will try it and see if I can get it to work for you. I'm not near a computer right now though.
