Best Levels explanation I've ever seen, for any software!

Thanks Bohdan! I tried to find an explanation angle I haven't seen anywhere else.

I love these new videos, they teach me things or refresh them in such an enlightening way, even as a long year substance user. Well done!

Thank goodness for this -- I've been pulling at those levels handles for years without any idea what I was actually doing.

Thanks Taylor, this is exactly what I wanted to help with!

THis is super well explained video, also the small little recap at each section is really great touch.

@@Substance3D PS do you guys know of the new feature to add chapters into your vids? That way when you scrool, it highligts the chapter in the scrubber. Its more work i guess, but many already add timestamps. support.google.com/youtube/answer/9884579?hl=en

I already knew levels.. but still the video helped. The visualization work is awesome. Didn't knew those histogram nodes got purpose (since I only used levels) and are simple to use.

As others have said, it's a great explanation about levels. Also, it's nice to learn a bit about the histogram nodes. I usually don't use levels in Photoshop, because curves basically does the same thing with more options, but I imagine it's more useful in a program like Substance Designer (especially with histogram).

Greate explanation, I just have one question. When I move my handle out & in with a level node, the histogram of this node doesn't update, it just stay the same no matter how much I tweak the value. Am I missing something?

Hi, I don't know if I have understood that correctly about the differences between Levels and Histogram: Levels is like the complete toolkit, and the Histogram tools are more focused in certain features that you can actually do with levels, but doing it faster with Histogram?
@Bulborb1 Жыл бұрын
Histogram provides the user with visual information about the value of the pixels. The levels tool let's you fine those carrots by limiting or expanding the range.

Thanks. How would you set a mid point uniform at 128,128,128 across several images?
@Substance3D4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what you mean exactly by uniform midpoint, I assume you mean the highest concentration of values averages around 128? In that case, by closely watching your histogram, so the peak aligns with the center. You'd have to eyeball it, as the Levels histogram doesn't actually allow you to read what bar represents what value. That's a manual operation, the only automatic alternative I can think of is a Highpass filter.

@@Substance3D I have several gray scale images and I would like to make sure that these share a mid point of 128,128,128
@Tompio2 жыл бұрын
I wanna learn more about the high dynamic range, but I don't know where to look for it. I understand it as unclamped grayscale value which makes height maps less limited. But I'm probably wrong.

I've been planning on doing a video like this for ages... "Mastering Bit Depth and Precision". These are very labor-intensive to make though, haven't gotten to it yet. Thanks for reminding me!
@Substance3D2 жыл бұрын
Ps your assumption is correct, though there's a bit more to it than that. It's also not meant just for height.

what is the difference between histogram scan vs range?
@Substance3D4 жыл бұрын
Did you watch the video? It's mentioned at 08:37, to quote: "Histogram Range works like scan, but on Levels Out. That means it reduces contrast and changes brightness. It works best on heightmaps, where you can use it as a scale and offset tool. It squashes your heightmap and moves it up or down the range."
