NOTE: The title is intentionally provocative - for reasons I outline in the video I can absolutely forgive most channels for not subtitling their videos. Even for bigger channels like Eddsworld, the cost of subtitling is often too high to justify it above other expenses. I'm very lucky that my workflow lends itself to subtitling, not every channel has that luxury. That being said there are companies who will subtitle your videos for you. I have no experience with those companies but Tom Scott wrote a handy guide in the description of this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5DCgI1pj9iCarssi=vnYKkYY-CNjY_Ctr. This was actually the video that convinced me to include captions on all my videos, and I highly reccomend it. If you're a larger channel who can afford an editor, maybe considering buying some subtitles on your next big video.

The wording is being misunderstood here. It's not that subtitles themselves should be mandatory. It's that the OPTION of subtitles should be mandatory. The video is saying that videos should always have the option of subtitles, not that subtitles should always be visible And not be removable. But of course "the option of [cc] should not be optional" is significantly less likely to be effective clickbait, so *shrugs*.

KZbin used to have “Community Captions” feature where people can help write subtitles to the video. But of course, KZbin just has to discontinue it in 2020 because of so-called abuse and under-utilization. Now we have only auto-generated captions, which sometimes can't caption all words despite the loudness of the video. I feel sorry for those who have hearing-impaired issues.

This went from the people behind EW helping to a lot of their audience to engage, understand and fully enjoy the series to a lesson about how features with the purpose to help the disable end up helping everyone. This was an amazing essay and from my own words/testimony I can say one of the very main reasons the vast majority of the content I watch being a Mexican and native spanish speaker is thanks to the english subtitles. Been surfing the web since age 4 and while learning to read and write english has been an easy task because of that I am not in conditions or trained enough to fully master the understanding verbally, and the only way I can do so it's by reading along. It has unconsciously helped me to become better at it and it's the tool that has made me truly understand the content I like to watch, so I am thankful for it and for you speaking up on it

I completely agree that subtitles should be put on as many videos as possible especially if they are non frequent scripted videos where you mainly just have to make minor adjustments. I had also never heard of community captions but now that I have they sound like a great ( I'll be it risky ) idea for creators and it's sad that they were discontinued. I am not disabled but I love putting subtitles on for many a reason and this video just helps prove the point in a great way that we need subtitles on more videos.

In 2020 (or so), KZbin removed Community Subtitles from the platform. Personally, I never used Community Subtitles for their exact purpose, as I was one of the people who made subtitles for Alan Becker’s videos (which have no dialogue) after he reacted to people’s comedic captioning of his animations. Although KZbin _did_ add Subtitler as a permission role, most creators forget to use it, the only one I know of being Jacknjellify, creators of BFDI.

I may not be someone who uses subtitles often, but I straight up find the process of writing subtitles fun. Back when community captions were a thing, I could watch videos I enjoyed many times and get more out of them by taking on the task of translating them into my native language. It's not a very widely spoken language, and most native speakers old enough for KZbin also speak English, so it wasn't certain they'd be used, but seeing something in your native language that's usually in a different one has a charm to it when translated well.

nowdays it'd actually be rather easy to monitor the foreign subtitles, because y'know...google translate exists...they could simply provide automatic translation to the creator's primary language, to allow proofreading, it would make it so much simpler for the creator to check, as long as they know to not be very nitpicky about the autotranslation quality, and are aware that the auto-translation can mess up perfectly good translations...but you WILL see stuff like whether the inserted bit is a joke, or if it's an actual context filling clue, such as mentioning something is a pun or word-play or refers to something well known in that culture (even full on translation teams struggle with puns and word-play, tom scott actually covered that in a video I think), etc, and hey, if the subtitles sound roughly right, can simply accept them, and people can switch to youtube's auto-captioning if it's bad >;P

To quote Tom Scott, "Buy some damn subtitles!" As for me, I try to subtitle my videos where I can. It's not that hard for me, I just feed the script for my video into KZbin's caption system and it cuts it up automatically. It's not perfect but all the words will be correct unless you go off-script at some point, and it's easy to change the script if you do do that. It obviously only works on scripted content but it's literally free, takes very little time and produces decent results that can really help with accessibility. Subtitling is a good thing to do and you will get cookies if you do it.

captions are just the simplest thing you can do with the biggest acessibility bump there's also stuff such as descriptive audio, and different audio tracks, that youtube supports, descriptive audio is mostly for blind, or poorly-sighted people, describing everything such as "tom and bom are walking in a park, it is a sunny spring day, tom is wearing a red hoodie, bom is wearing a t-shirt and shorts" and such, and yes you can have actual audio dubbing to other languages also, lol

it's such a shame that nobody knows you can do wild things with youtube's captioning system, if you use third-party tools, the tamest of which is doing like tom scott videos, color-coding subtitles to whoever's speaking, the wildest are some japanese music videos with text tracking signs in video, jumping all over the place, changing colors, changing font sizes, and all sorts of stuff...and of course they also have a second subtitle track that doesn't do any of that fancyness but is purely lyrics

Thank you for this. My hearing is fine, but I still prefer subtitles, ESPECIALLY for music when the lyrics are often delivered oddly or drowned out by instruments. Though like you said, the auto captioning is surprisingly good. I remember when it used to be a topic of mockery for how inaccurate it is, but in the past year or so it's improved so much I do wish, though, that we could set the default CC language for all videos. I like to have CC on, but then I'll go to a video that's spoken English, but the only CC is, say, Taiwanese. YT will play the Taiwanese captions since that's all there is, which to me is just distracting. So I turn it off. But then, this turns CC off for every video and I have to remember to re-enable it... until the next video with CC in some random language I can't read. Very annoying. Wish there was an "English or nothing" option. I also miss the community contributions system. Even something as simple as "The uploader must approve the captions before they go live" would have fixed a lot of the issues. I remember, I think it was JackSepticEye, disabled community contributions because fans kept putting random jokes in the captions or self-promotion instead of proper captions. I assume his complaints are part of what convinced KZbin to remove the whole system, unfortunately

This feature was the one thing that could've helped a lot of people get into a special kind of media in KZbin videos that usually was restricted to one language unless someone made their own version of the video with subtitles, of the features that google or youtube have killed this one is the most beneficial for everyone along with a few updates to improve the system Companies in general need to stop using the excuse 'Few people use it' when it just means there is an audience or group of people there that can easily expand, it aggravates me because I was doing my part in contributing to a variety of videos that few of them introduced new fans to a pair of series that I like and this was also a pretty nice way to practice translating in the spot, there's something always nice to get from this which again with a few updates the system could've been the closest to being perfect but getting rid of it to let ai take care of it is just quite harmful to go back having some limitations. Killing this feature is one of KZbin/Google major screw-ups that they shouldn't have done in the first place

It got to a point when having, albeit base level, knowledge of two languages on top of English made it hard for me to decipher what people were saying, especially considering I have autism and tend to briefly zone out of conversations and miss context. Subtitles really helped with my brain registering certain words. For those wondering, I can say some very basic sentences in Norwegian and I have forgotten basically all of the grammar and I completely forgot most French over last summer and I'm taking my exam next year

something that really irritates me is when people not only don't add subtitles but also directly put things WHERE THE SUBTITLES GO so you have to get up and pause the video and you have to shuffle everything around, why can't THEY just figure out "hey, maybe we shouldn't put key parts of the video directly in the place which subtitles go!" (I can give minecraft youtubers the exception though, but stuff like YIAY is so irritating in that regard) edit: other things I want to say are that youtube's auto-generated captions are good enough to the point where they catch up words that I COULDN'T! it's definitely improved a lot over the years, but I still think youtubers should add real subtitles to their videos anyway

imo the gold standard for caption editing comes from channels like Moon Channel for using any tools available for moving the captions to the appropriate place on the screen to make it easier to see the content without obstruction, Tom Scott for coloring captions and moving to the context to make it much easier to tell apart the sources of audio, and GMTK for designing most of the visual content to simply not interfere with the default position of the captions on screen. the approaches are many, so there's little-to-no excuse to not providing them unless the video is both completely mute and specifically lacking the justification to include them in the sense that they won't provide anything useful (but where has that ever been the case?) personally, it was a big part for myself learning english, and it still helps me today when i have the issue of just having my brain not register a phrase and having to rewatch things again. written words always makes it easier whenever that happens.

I've been wanting to put subtitles on my videos, starting with my most recent one. But when I tried, the system seemed very very clunky. I think I've gotta go back and give it another shot, but I just remember being confused and wondering how I could start a workflow that isn't super tedious.

I miss the community subtitles. One time I was re watching wtfuture and I turned on the Serbian subtitles for fun (I'm Serbian I speak the language) And there were some hilarious Easter eggs in the vid. And I haven't seen subtitles available for the beyond episodes 😢

One example of the community subtitle thing being very helpful is some of Alan Becker's 'Animation vs' videos There's no dialogue in the videos, as the characters are stick figures but the captions for the videos, for the implied dialogue and actions are very funny and descriptive! Miss them...

I have inattentive adhd and an auditory processing disorder. I typically don’t need closed captions with KZbin videos, but whenever I do it can be extremely helpful. I tend to use CC/subtitles more with watching adult shows/movies on Netflix or another streaming service because it’s hard for me to understand what people are saying when most of the time the dialogue seems too quiet, people are talking too fast for me to understand right away, or I have a hard time understanding people with accents. This might be why I prefer watching kids shows lol

DBZ Abridged has *both* fully-accurate and fun subtitles, each in their own seperate sections (English/Canadian English), which I think is pretty cool

I am from Mexico and I'm very good at writing and reading English but sometimes I can't understand some words that people say. My point is that I appreciate when the KZbinrs put subtitles on their videos so deaf people and people who speak another languages can use it.

I actually feel like adding subtitles will block off some of the bottom part of the video.Who knows? What if some important frames in the video were blocked out by the subtitles after editing.Subtitles also need time,I don't think I'm ready for that now.

I know the snapcube editors do a really good job subtitling they add Speaker: then what they would say. Because of multiple voices I think it's really good.

Subtitles are very good if your volume is low and you wanna understand what they’re saying

I've had subtitles on both on youtube and on tv for most of my life since my mom was hard of hearing. Nowadays I like to have subtitles on since sometimes it's hard to make out what words characters say. I've also watched subbed anime before despite never getting super into anime, dubbed is almost always worse than the original japanese and while sometimes it's good it's usually still not as good as the original.

4:50 secs in and I SEE VOLTAIRE!!! And now for a super long explained dialoge on this dude in a cartoon from the 2000's. Did you know that Voltaire wrote a song for the Cartoon Series "The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy." (Or "Grim and Evil" before) The song Voltaire wrote for the episode "Little Rock of Horrors" was called Brains and the song was about 5 mins long which was most of the episode. There is a pretty interesting story to the song's creation with Maxwell Atoms (The creator of Billy and Mandy) and Voltaire but I'm not gonna explain that since I don't have much time on my hands. However, for the Special "Billy and Mandy's Big Boogey Adventure", Voltaire wrote another song for the intro of the special called "Land of the Dead." Voltaire in this case is a major part of many of Maxwell Atoms' Projects at times. In-fact, he was gonna write some music for another cartoon for Maxwell but the show never happened. And as the Toonitor, I was hooked to his other songs and thinking everytime about Billy and Mandy with most songs like "When your Evil" and The Skeleton Dance." Now I wonder why Tomee Bear added this to the video?

Eyyy, that's him! Truth be told I recently started watching his gothic homemaking series (after only knowing him through Billy & Mandy) and used the clip because it was an example of speech recognition being good but not perfect (getting the phrase Café Del l'Enfer wrong)

Like actually, I don't put on subtitles much but when I do. It is mostly just to understand what the person said in the video. It gets annoying when I put captions and then it is just automated Vietnamese or different languages.
