EXACTLY!!! 😂 I went from the shell on my truck box to Roof Top tents, to now I have. Rayzr FK slide in truck camper for one person. We do a lot of guy fishing trips and everyone is self sufficient with most preferring the room of their tents and a screened in room set up. A couple of guys have teardrops not unlike in this video, but most have been homebuilt with independent off-road suspensions MacGyvered underneath. My dog and I are warm and happy with the slide in camper, we don’t go too extreme and the F150 Tremor handles the set up perfectly. My other vehicle we take when my wife comes along is a converted Mercedes 4x4 van. It’s very comfortable, has more power (120 volt) than needed with 400 AH of LiFePO4 batteries and 600 watts of solar. It powers a 2,000 watt inverter that even has enough power to run the A/C for up to 10 hours without starting the vehicle or included 2.5Kw Onan generator. It’s truly luxurious and surprisingly capable off-road with a set of BFG KO2s on it. They are decently tall from the factory, but if wanted (my wife says H*LL NO) they are easily lifted with high quality kits out there. I am fortunate and can afford these comforts, but it’s really stupid how much $$$ is tied up in both rigs. I find driving the van is really easy and often will use it as my daily driver.

I own an 03 GMC Yukon Denali with the 6.0 which is the Escalade's much better looking sister and when it comes to towing it's got the power, comfort is got awesome suspension, MPG it drinks gas like crazy... Ok that last one is a down side, but it's still a nice well built truck and I love it.

Sort of an anticlimactic end to the series. I'm currently working on updates for a Suburban to use it for overlanding / camping and was hoping for some additional ideas (bike/kayak racks, cooking options, sanitation, roof top shower system, pop-up / tent / awning, interior storage / organization, etc.) for my own build. This ended up being a let down as the focus was really just on buying some old trucks, not on how to modify them for overlanding use on a budget. Instead, the actual "overlanding" modifications were to buy a few cheap camping items from Walmart and call it a day. The only mods were to replace the tires.
@trailrunnah8886

@@trailrunnah8886 Yes, I've watched a number of their videos, along with many other "van life" videos for inspiration. Mine isn't a permanent build, as I use the truck for other things too. So all of my "modifications" are reversible, or are just something that I can take in/out as needed.

Agreed, I was majorly disappointed because I wanted to learn some tips for my rig. I have the same Suburban (99) as in the video 4" lift, maxxis razr 33" tires cheap roof rack. Cheapest most modular "mod" is a sized sheet of 1/2" plywood (driver side with the second row down) on top of 4x walmart 38L tubs (1x tools, 1x food, 1x gear, 1x kitchen). plywood serves as the bed and/or seat... sleep on top w/ foam or 1-2 sleeping bags as a pad (I tried the same cot and it sucks). when not camping plywood flat on the floor. Second option w/cooler is match the height of the cooler w/ tubs 1x tools, 1x kitchen etc. Cheap extended roof rack for everything else... I mounted the spare up top for more room. Run inverter and Ryobi batteries fan for air, tools etc. My main issue to date is covering the windows for privacy, may fit foam sheet insulation. Small grill and basic pot/pan cook. For pee pee poo poo 5 gal luggable loo. Shower = bucket water mild soap wipes or camp ground facility. Super contained rig. Last prob is no way to open the back barn doors from the inside so you have to exit from the front... also run a hitch mount hinged bike rack (4 bikes). Feedback? -Bill

Of these three, I would vote Suburban as best, and the Escalade as second place. Third is obvious. *NOTE: Had Tommy slept the other way around (head towards the back doors) the hinge in the seat back/floor panel would not have been a comfort issue. (I also own a GMT-400 Suburban.)

@@ianberry5562 yeah, I guess at the time AWD was thought to be more "premium" and luxurious. The Denali of that generation didn't have low range either, but the Tahoe/Yukons did. So considering how much they like the Escalade, I think a Tahoe Z71 would have been a great pick. It had the smaller 5.3 liter, but it was loaded with most of the options that the Cadillac would have had, however, it has low range and more skid plates.

I actually really liked Tommy's offhand idea about the future series "Go Small." It may have just been kidding, but with the current gas prices, that would be a cool series to watch. The 3 guys compete to find the best/smallest/most affordable/most efficient vehicle that will have the highest range and fuel efficiency. EVs maybe aren't allowed, since they're still somewhat expensive and only a small percentage of cars on the road. But anything else goes, whether it's hybrid or not, got start/stop, wheel skirts, a tiny body (like a smart), whatever else. Basically the opposite of this series.

Great video series! It's kinda like the previous hosts from Top Gear challenges. Got to ask, how long did it take to boil the water with the inverter? Tried it on my Tacoma and it took over 20 mins.

This was a great series, Great work, Great cinematography. I like all three of these vehicles and all three have there place in the History books of the American Automobile. Most people don't hardcore off road much, so probably the Cadillac is the best for most people, but the most practical and useable is the Suburban. The Ford Excursion is very cool but so big, again The suburban size is more practical, but the Ford is very well made, just wish it didn't have the V10 spark plug issues. Actually all three of these are pretty well made let's give GM and Ford credit.

V10 over diesel anyday due weight/expense and reliability. I tow 10K with no issues. No spark plug issues anymore after year 2000. Mine is 2002 and is amazing at 265K so far. Still towing strong and no tranny or engine issues . It does have a harsher ride, but it is a 3/4ton vs the others are 1/2 ton or less. The will always ride better.

Just disgusted that Tommy had decided to make cosmetic changes instead of functional improvements to the Suburban.

I know!!! I’m not so disgusted, but surprised! He had about $6K!! Even if he paid for the install, he could have had a very decent lift, shocks, sway bars lift and BFG supplied the tires!! It would have been so much better. Even $$$ left over for a couple of cameras to help with vision if out there alone! Maybe a proper winch (2nd grade) on a hitch set up. Front receiver for $150 or $250 installed. Hopefully get the rear differential sorted out. Decent set of seat covers for the front and a self inflating mattress!! It would be a capable off-road vehicle that looks good (no sticker crap) and sleeps like a motel! Hinge problem solved!!!😂😂 I have not built up this generation of GM yet as I like the older stuff 1980 or older, basically. Very easy to work on.
@trailrunnah8886
@trailrunnah8886 2 жыл бұрын
Same! I had high hopes for that. He could have done a simple 2-in lift and gone up to 285s for not much money, or put a functional winch on it. Now whoever buys this thing has to spend the extra time to scrape that crap off of it.

@@trailrunnah8886 - Hopefully they get a good laugh while doing so!! They went for a “campy” style on the videos (Andrey pulled it off the best) and Tommy did get campy!! Haha. The Suburban is up to $2100 currently with over 5 days left. It’s likely to double in bids in the last few hours, so they should get their money back!! Maybe that’s what they are going for. Minimize their losses. If it was a rust free example, I suspect they may have put this lift on as it would jump in price, but that rust puts a lot of buyers off. I personally hate rust!! I live in a rust belt and the rusted wheel wells on the trucks all around,,,,, ugghh. First thing I’m thinking is a couple of thousand bucks to fix the rust,,,, I don’t weld well enough to do it myself,,,,, hahaha. They are gonna lose on the Excursion,,,,, especially with what fuel prices are doing. I’m in oil rich Alberta, Canada and still gas prices are almost $2/litre CAD or about $6 bucks USD per gallon!!! Ouch!! Not that I will ever recover the initial cost or depreciation, I still bought a Diesel Tahoe RST. Since I was buying something anyways,,, the increased mileage currently offsets the increased cost of diesel fuel. For now. See how far the demand for diesel goes up!! Hahaha. At least I buy it bulk and store it on my acreage. Stay safe out there, Eh!

@@shitloveaduck yeah, they definitely seemed like they were having fun, and I definitely enjoyed watching the videos. I really like modifying vehicles for low cost, that's why I was so hoping they would do actual mods. I agree with you about rust, I'm in New England, so all three of these trucks would be super rusted out if they were here. Honestly, compared to what I see around here, that Suburban is pretty clean and I would buy it with confidence, especially for 4K. Good luck with that Tahoe, that sounds like one hell of a ride! I really like the new Tahoes, and that diesel sounds like a great motor. I have a 9-year-old 4Runner, if I baby it I can get 20 MPG, and gas here is about to hit $5 USD per gallon. It's paid for though, and it's been super reliable so I plan on hanging on to it for a long while. I did the math, and even if I spent say $4,000 to get a car that gets twice the mileage, it would still take me a couple years for it to actually pay off. My girlfriend's car gets about 40 MPG, but her car payment is more than my monthly gas bill, plus she still has to put fuel in it. Oh well, it is what it is.
@shitloveaduck
@shitloveaduck 2 жыл бұрын
@@trailrunnah8886 - I get everything you say!! Haha. I am a big fan of the 4Runners. There are some expensive maintenance items, but you don’t worry about dropping a motor in or anything like that,,,, trade offs,,,. Reliability is key. I’m fortunate so the Tahoe is paid for. I actually just had it delivered yesterday so this afternoon we are doing a bit of a road trip, 300 km one way, (180 miles or so). Then, next weekend, it is going for a 2400 km road trip (1500 miles) each way through the mountains loaded up with fishing gear, coolers,,,,, etc! Should be a lot of fun and a great way to break the Tahoe in!! It’s big though. I’ll be ducking in every parade we drive through!! This and my other truck is a F150,,, hahaha. It’s what you are used to, Eh!
