I love how sweet and innocent you two are with your interpretations. Yes, Amber, there is definitely some dark humor in this song that you are picking up on, because this song (like a lot of Cher's music) is very easy to read as a glimpse into the life of a social outsider. "Gypsies, tramps and thieves" is more than likely what the townsfolk would shout while letting her family know they weren't welcome, and better keep on moving; and the bridge of the song is about how the girl was seduced and abandoned by a 21 year old hitch-hiker when she was just 16. The last verse implies that she went on to have his daughter who is now growing up just like she did, living in the wagon of a travelling show. It's a lot sadder than it is funny actually. But I did appreciate that you both seemed to recognize the double standard of the respectable people of the town shouting slurs at them by the light of day, and coming around at night to watch (and pay) the "dancing girls"

Yes the song implies the day with taunted and Jared it gypsies tramps thieves insult slurs shouting and hollering the finger-pointing but by the same token the people that did this were Hypocrites because they added fuel to the Fire by paying for you-know-what! Also she wasn't so much seduced as she picked up the boy the song States picked up a boy the father knew he was in the Caravan, so hit you ride with them and probably said let me off here not knowing that he was in Memphis or knowing he was just going to Memphis but he knew she was pregnant he didn't want any parts, that had to be sneaky the cabin so small I wonder how they got away with it had to be real quiet I guess when Dad was sleeping??🤔🤫 but in essence things were not much different then than they are now! Get the girl locked up( pregnant)-- and take off like a bandit,( pardon the pun)- reality is a said *shame*!!🥺

Do the black and white video with the model in it. Anything I say now will not do this song justice. This was an 80s song that women swoon over and they just melt. Yeah, "in trouble" is a euphemism that hasn't been used for a long time, so I'm not surprised it didn't register. But yes, after she got pregnant, the song turns from "I was born" to "she was born" -- meaning life turned out the same for her daughter as it was for her.

In 1971 when this song came out I was 9. There was this older girl, about 13, down the street I had a crush on. I never had the courage to ask her out but I did ask to go over her house and listen to records with her a few times. This song and "Half breed" are the two songs I remember her playing a lot. She ended up meeting an older guy. Her little bother became my best friend and remained so for 40 years, until he passed away in 2013. She's married to the same guy she met way back then and we are still all friends. That's what I think of when I hear these songs. Me, I married my high school sweetheart 41 years ago.

Probably my favorite of Cher's many hits. Cher has the somewhat dubious honor of introducing "autotune" to mainstream music in her 1997 song, "Believe" (GREAT song). Since you've heard Cher from 1989 and 1971, you know that Cher most definitely doesn't NEED autotune, but it provides and interesting (and obvious) effect in "Believe" that enhances the production. Sadly, it is not always used for creating effect, but to "improve" the imperfections in performer's voices. I applaud perfection, but imperfection is gloriously interesting and adds a touch of humanity to any performance. Autotune doesn't also sound better, but often sounds "sanitized." Glad you are hitting so many of the great tunes of the past, when artists (vocal and otherwise) relied more consistently on talent and passion than digital magic. Keep up the great work! And congrats on your son!

Cher’s also quite an actress and an Oscar winner. One of my favorites is “Silkwood”, a true story staring Meryl Streep as Karen Silkwood. She and Cher’s character worked in a plutonium fuel rod factory near Crescent, Oklahoma. Karen Silkwood became a nuclear whistle-blower and a labor union activist and died in a mysterious car crash while investigating alleged wrongdoing at the Kerr-McGee plutonium plant. At the end of every show they would sing that song... no wonder people got so sick of it -- and that it would eventually become iconic in the 'Groundhog Day' movie! I remember at the time of their variety show (when I was pre-teen) the ongoing gag was always how Cher was taller than Sonny and she had the deeper voice! Sonny Bono became mayor of Palm Springs and then a congressman just before his death in 1998. Cherilyn Sarkisian became, well, Cher... Apparently even though they divorced they still had a mutual love for each other -- but I don't think Sonny's broken heart ever fully recovered.

Cher is one of my all time caves, y'all, SO glad you discovered her! I was watching another of your videos and, Jordan, you looked at Amber and said, "I got you, babe," which made me laugh because I'm not sure if you know Cher started out singing with her first husband, Sonny, and they had big hits with The Beat Goes On and, yes, I Got You Babe. When they had their TV show, Sonny and Cher always closed the show by singing I Got You Babe. Cher's clothes were all done by the famous designer, Bob Mackie, she was his muse. In fact, Cher started the famous bell bottom jeans trend in the late 60s. I hope you'll dive into some Sonny and Cher soon, and I hope you enjoy the ride!

This song is generational. It starts out with her as the child, Mother is dancing for the coins they would throw, dad preaching gospel out loud while selling booze and gambling with the men at night. The boy they picked up in Memphis got the main character preg. The baby girl was born in the caravan just like the main character at thr beginning, and now SHE (main character) is the mother dancing for the coins and dad is now GRANDPA doing what he can...as before.

I don't think it mentions gambling with the men at night. I think the reference to 'late at night the men would come around, and lay their money down' refers to her mother (and later her) being a prostitute.
@trinkab
@trinkab 2 жыл бұрын
@@mortisrat I believe it is poker or craps (dice) where they "lay your money down" when placing a bet. It's pretty much in every western. The only two females in the story are the mom/wife (I presume) of Dad and the daughter, and considering how dad would have reacted to what the boy did to his daughter (if he had known) I don't think they were into that sort of "laying."
@mortisrat
@mortisrat 2 жыл бұрын
@@trinkab As the men would be more than able to gamble without them there, I don't think they'd show up just to play with a stranger they don't trust, or that the ominous tone of the music and singing would be warranted if that was just about a few guys slinging some dice. What would be missing from a small town is hookers, or at the least some new ones - even in a larger place. Her daddy would probably have killed the guy because he got it for free, and did it when she was still a virgin and without any birth control. I did look it up to check, and it is about prostitution.

The song describes the life of a girl, the song's narrator, who was "born in the wagon of a traveling show" with her mother, an exotic dancer, and father, a patent medicine salesman and preacher. Though the family endures jeers of being "gypsies, tramps and thieves" from townspeople, the men of the town would always come out at night to "lay their money down." One day, the family takes in a 21-year-old man who travels with them from "just south of Mobile" to Memphis. One night during the trip, the man implicitly has intercourse with the 16-year-old narrator without her father knowing, and three months after the man disappears in Memphis, the narrator is "in trouble" (pregnant). The narrator's daughter is born later, now the narrator is the dancer and now Grandpa did whatever he could (as now he is the grandfather of the narrator's new baby) continuing another generation of Gypsies, Tramps, & Thieves. If you listen to the studio version the song it is a better understanding of the story of the song.

Cher’s confidence on stage is a very interesting characteristic of her performance because, when she first started her music career it was at the (strong) urging of her husband Sonny Bono. He wrote her songs, often sang counter to her though his singing voice was nasally and not the best, and marketed them until they achieved fame. Cher had to be urged along by Sonny because despite him knowing and believing in her talent, Cher herself was very shy and unsure of herself. Cher’s lack of confidence in herself eventually subsided over the years abd she has also had a small career in acting and used her popularity to create a public platform from which she has spoken out on a number of topics (many of which I personally do not agree with her on) that she held near and dear to her heart. She has always exuded immense humility and confidence even when young and not believing in her talents the way others did. She’s certainly an amazing woman.

Cher is the rare celebrity who is a bigger than life icon decades in the game and nothing less than the queen of every musical genre and trend yet somehow has remained her sassy impossibly grounded real as real gets self aware self to this day. She will call people and institutions and injustices out, but the beauty of Cher is she will not hesitate to call herself out, hilariously so. The great comedian Kathy Griffith tells the story hanging out at Cher's house watching movies and both deciding to order a pizza. Cher pointed to the landline motioning for Kathy to take care of it and Kathy saying shouldn't Cher order it since its her house and neighborhood and Kathy wasn't familiar with either. Cher just looked at her like a deer in headlights. Kathy suddenly realized and asked Cher, 'Oh my god, it just hit me; you've never done this before; you don't know how to order a pizza, do you?' for which Cher shot back with what only Cher could shoot back with: 'Pfft! Please. No, I ain't never ordered no damn pizza before in my life. I'm Cher, bitch.' On anyone else, it'd sound arrogant and wrong. But, from Cher, it's hilarious, charmimg, insanely self aware and spot-on. In the Avengers, Iron Man and Loki go back and forth verbally josting which side has the tactical advantage and finally, Tony plays his trump card and says, 'Yeah, we have a Hulk.' That's how I feel as human being and American to anybody that mess with us: 'Yeah. We have a Cher.'
