Karen Dalton was a leading light of the folk music scene in New York's Greenwich Village in the early and mid-60s. Bob Dylan called her his favorite singer from that era and says in his autobiography that she sang like Billie Holiday and played guitar like Jimmy Reed (blues legend). High praise but this song is from the last record she ever released. Health issues mainly caused by her addictions cut her life short as she dropped out of sight after the early '70s. Thanks, Harri.

Yesterday I attended Richard Tucker’s memorial. Richard was Karen’s ex-husband. He wrote a song, that she recorded, called are you leaving for the country. He was the worlds nicest man.Karen Dalton was a very wounded person who’s demons got the best of her had a fairly young age.

Fantastic ! .. I had never heard of this artist before, so thanks to John and Harri for introducing me to her .. Such a wonderfully raw and distinctive vocal sound, and as you say Harri, it's definitely etched with pain and life experience .. This song was both melancholy and melodic, and that violin really added a lot to it .. Great stuff and I'll have to go check out some more of her songs.👍

there’s a doc on Karen called in my own time you should check out. There’s also a contemporary Americana singer named SG Goodman who has a similarly bold vocal take like hers, and a vaguely similar musical genre. Her new album Teethmarks is great. Billie Holiday is a good reference point too.

Thanks for the tip .. Will definitely check out that documentary .. I see that it's only very recent ( 2021 ) .. Loved this song and her voice, so looking forward to watching it ! **Update** :- Just watched that doco on YT and it was really good ! .. What a heart-wrenching life story .. Such a unique talent, but so much sadness, missed opportunities, and hardship .. Glad she is getting belated recognition, but wish she'd got more of it while she was still with us.😥

That’s a perfect description, there is a lot of pain in her voice, the Billie Holiday comparison makes sense, I can hear that. Her music, even though it’s so sad, was oddly comforting after a break up I had. Now I’m a bit afraid to hear it again, it’s powerful! I subscribed to your show, I like your perspective a lot!

Thanks John and Harri! This woman had a truly different voice and this song is haunting and tinged with sadness. It’s very intriguing. Good commentary from Harri 🌺✌️

I love Karen Dalton. This particular song takes me to another world. I listen to it every day over and over as much as possible. I am sad she left so soon. She had so much to give to the world. I just wish the world would've given back to her, while she was here.

Hey, Harri: All I can say for this reaction video is that I have the very Sunbeam coffee percolator that is seen at the 23 second mark. My mom got one for Christmas in what I am guessing was the late 50s and I ended up with it. How she got it for Christmas is a story on its own.

Great choice Jon, I actually prefer the alternative version which you can find as a bonus track on any streaming service. It’s a bit more stripped back. But yeah, just beautiful and tragic. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 keep spreading the good word Hari 🙌🏼

Aside from billie holiday she has this voice that reflects the sound of young whistly southern accent that’s full of yearning.
