The woman backing up Steve is Chaka Khan. Take the dive into her early work from the 1970's like "Tell Me Something Good" (with Rufus) and "I'm Every Woman" Yeah, she did it before Whitney; it was her first solo hit without Rufus. Then her 1980's songs like "I Feel for You" and "Ain't Nobody" (also with Rufus). "I Feel for You" may help you understand why people sing her name. "Chaka Khan Chaka Khan" I think it might be only on the official music video and that's the one you should listen to. It's a cover of a Prince song but that "Chaka Khan" opening is why I think of it as her song.

Steve Winwood is a legend - he started playing/performing when he was only 14. You must take a deep dive into his group Traffic (John Barlycorn, Low Spark of High Heeled Boys) and many of his other hits including a song called Valerie (not the Amy Winehouse song), When You See A chance, The Finer Things, and from the Spencer Davis Group Gimme some Lovin. Super, super talented - so glad you've discovered him! And Chaka Kahn is a legend!! Definitely do her on Female Friday.

I remember this was a massive hit in the summer of 1986. We drove from Boston to Cape Cod and we LOVED the song so much that each time the song ended on one station, we'd turn the dial and sure enough another station would just start the song. It seriously was the only song we sang on our drive over, LOL. Steve Winwood sounded so great with Chaka Khan.

Steve actually performed with his Father and older brother Muff at 8 yrs old. When they played in bars and taverns, they would turn the piano towards the crowd so Steve was hidden from the crowd. He joined The Spencer Davis group at age 14, he's 73 now. In the tribute to George Harrison "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" where Prince showed his tremendous guitar skills, Steve was in the back, the white dude on piano. 🤔🤗😎

Have you done other Winwood songs? From this era, I love love love "While You See A Chance", "Back in the High Life" and "The Finer Things" -- and from a bit earlier in his career, "Arc of a Diver" is amazing. The man is a rock legend. And speaking of legends, that's Chaka Khan singing backing vocals. I love it when she gets into it and it comes out "Brang me a higher love", lol. Chaka and her band Rufus do an amazing and fun tune called "Tell Me Something Good" - and then a later hit song for her was "Ain't Nobody". ❤️

If you want to dive into Chaka Khan who is the amazing voice complimenting Steve’s on this track, you could go with what was her biggest hit chart wise which was “I Feel For You” ( written by Prince). But, her music as part of Rufus is just as good and I would recommend a couple of strong R&B tracks which I know Amber will appreciate, “Ain’t Nobody” (which is my personal favorite), “Do You Love What You Feel” and her anthemic “I’m Every Woman”, and NO, that is not a Whitney song, Chaka recorded it first in 1978 for her debut solo album and it was her first solo hit. Whitney recorded a cover version in 1992 and while she did an amazing job, sorry, no one can match the original Chaka version, not even Whitney.

The woman is Chaka Khan. You have to check out her song "I Feel For You". Produced by Prince in 1984 and the first R&B song to feature a rapper. Also her song Ain't Nobody which I'm sure you would know without even knowing that you know it. The rhythm guitar of Higher Love was performed by Nile Rogers, who you might know from the 70s band Chic (check out their songs "Good Times" and "Le Freak"), and the Daft Punk song Get Lucky.
2 жыл бұрын
It's "Le Freak", not "Freak Out" (that's just a prominent bit of the chorus, but said chorus also contains "le freak, c'est chic")

As Winwood reminisced, "My earliest memories are of the music in church and of my aunts and uncles singing the beautiful old hymns. 'Higher Love' is a generation past that, when things were not so much taken for granted, so that one has to plea, 'Bring me a higher love,' and the lines are all trying to explain why there must be higher love. A modern hymn, you might call it." Armed with spirituality, the resulting track became his breakthrough solo hit, flying high to No. 1 on August 29, 1986. The tune went on to receive two Grammys in 1987 for Record of the Year (against Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" and Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love") and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

If you saw Avengers - Endgame, you've definitely heard Steve Winwood in his group Traffic. In the opening scenes with Tony Stark stranded in space, the song playing in the back is Traffic's song "Dear Mr Fantasy". He's a talent for the ages with him in everything he's touched. There's a KZbin video from about 9 years ago of him playing on an acoustic version of a song he did back in the 60s with the Spencer Davis Group (EDIT: correcting the group he did this song with .... it's Blind Faith) titled "Can't Find My Way Home". What a voice!

The great and beautiful Chaka Khan is the one with him. Love that lady. Though this is an 80s song, Steve Winwood is older school than that, back to the 60s. He was in the bands Traffic, Blind Faith with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker (check out their song "Can't Find My Way Home" some time) and the Spencer Davis Group, before his solo career in the '80s..

Steve Winwood is definitely a rabbit-hole you want to go down! He's a multi-talented singer and songwriter having collaborated with numerous artists over the years. Winwood originally was a key member of several major acts of the 60s and 70s that include: the Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind Faith, and the Eagles, as well as a successful solo career. As a solo artist, he's had numerous hit singles and continues to collaborate with multiple artists today -- most recently in 2020 with Steely Dan. Winwood was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Traffic in 2004.

gotta do some Chaka Khan reaction if you haven't yet. She was close to my old HS mate Prince, and performed at his memorial, which i was blessed to see. It was the Arc of a Diver album that he played all the instruments on not this one. Nile Rodgers (from Chic) played guitar on this song and Joe Walsh plays guitar on two other songs on this album, so he didn't do everything himself on this one.

I love that fact that at 6:43, you thought it was a horn, but it was actually Chaka's voice. That is probably the biggest compliment you can pay her, if you know her background and how she wants to use her voice. Just so you know, I take nothing from Steve Winwood. But the entire "breakdown" when they amp it up as you say, that entire background vocal three-part harmony of the chorus is all Chaka. Steve is only doing his adlibs (which are great), but the second half of the song, vocally, is Chaka, her background and her adlibs along with Steve.
