My favorite part about all this relatively new pop-punk (other than the awesome music) is that a lot of the music videos feature a band member wearing a shirt of another awesome pop-punk band. Just something I enjoy seeing

For examples, people are quick to call Title Fight's pre-Floral Green stuff "pop punk", but it has way more in common with '90s melodic hardcore than a lot of the metallic stuff lumped into modern hardcore. Just because a band uses more singing than screaming and has a high melodic presence doesn't mean they're pop punk.

These guys are one of the best bands in pop punk yet they hardly get any attention, what gives?
@ThatDereKid8 жыл бұрын
It's because there's very little "pop" in their songwriting. They're basically a melodic hardcore/ skatepunk band (aside from their new record which I would call post-hardcore due to the progressive elements) and that is less mainstream than bands like TSSF and Real Friends, who have a similar toolset but sing about more pop topics and drop more of the hardcore elements than this band does, thus lending themselves to catchy choruses about girlfriends and therefore more mainstream appeal.

In between the times when things seem real and things are real You wake up so late And I've been up all morning doing my best to keep still The time it doesn't take All too familiar Don't you remember the indifference? I always thought We were escaping from it From a culture that's come to hate us But all that running gets exhausting So come back and see me So easy, it's like breathing Gotta get a job Gotta earn some money Gotta feed your apathy for money It's always been the best way Around impenetrable gates And everything has And everything will change You had to save face And I was in a different place And the sun is priced so high these days Where did we stray? Where did we stray? Where did we stray? I always thought we would escape Where did we stray?

Yeah, you're right about that--it's definitely a grey area. It's just that both hardcore and pop punk have gotten to become such wide genres that it's hard to hard classify crossover bands. All I know is I enjoy Such Gold. Haha.

I would have agreed with you a few years ago, but most of the pop-punk influence Such Gold showed were only on their EPs. A lot of people seem to think anything with a punk beat and singing is "pop punk", but SG aren't all that poppy. They're melodic hardcore in an A Wilhelm Scream type sense, where they're progressive and very melodic but not straight-up pop punk. It's just easier to call them melodic hardcore instead of delve into complicated genre explanations.
