"I was at a train station, and noticed a trans flag on a wall, which I tried to rip down, but the police stopped me and arrested me!" "And why did you try to rip down the trans flag?" "I thought it would delay the trains again, because from the first god damn day that forsaken flag has been there, and ever since that trans pride parade has passed through the area, the trains have never been on time! These trans flags are delaying trains! The word has to get out, if there are any trans flags or people present near a trains stati-" "Sorry about that folks, but we had to cut Paul off there. As we all know, trains don't get delayed by trans flags and trans people, they get delayed by gay folk who derail trains from their straight tracks. Story time: I came out as NB to my mother recently and explained to her I don't like feminine language being applied to me, as well as all the ways she can change the words she uses to make me feel a little better. She seemed more confounded than anything at the idea of having to use different things to refer to me but eventually settled on just using my name to replace things like "daughter" when talking to her coworkers. She's put in a great effort considering she's had to attempt to erase over twenty years of ingrained knee-jerk pronouns and gendered words from her lexicon when referring to me. The issue is... she doesn't fully understand what nonbinary really is lol and she'll start to say things like "baby girl" then go "sorry, baby it." I have a shirt that says "my witch's brew is pumpkin spice" and she saw me walk by with it on and immediately went "there's little miss pumpkin spice" then quickly apologized and said "pumpkin it." And, honestly, "it" isn't an attractive pronoun to me, but it's so, so, SO funny that she's made sense of "they/them" in this manner and is trying so hard. I just don't have it in me to tell her "it" and "they/them" aren't colloquial. Besides, the things she comes up with to correct herself are hilarious and kill me every time. It's also sweet, in a way, even though she doesn't understand but is doing her best anyway.

Is that the definition of 'she's a little confused but she got the spirit'? 🤔 Lol seriously tho your mum seems sweet. On a different note, I went under 'it' for a while in my friend group due to an inside joke, and I have to say I got used to it. It doesn't feel quite as weird anymore to use 'it' for a human than it did before the joke.

Oh boy. That is cute and I'm glad she's trying, but why do they always make it more complicated than it really is? It's not boy/girl/it, it's boy/girl/child. We already have words for these things. But they always go for the confusing, grammatically incorrect, and often dehumanizing options. Like "So you're a they? Instead of his backpack, do I say they's backpack? Instead of my son you're my they"? Like. Dude. You went to school. You know this shit. Don't overthink it.

The underlying issue is that, like a lot of LGBT topics, pronoun use and the response to people being hateful and trying to upset and denigrate others has lost the plot. Pronouns are descriptive. The point of pronouns is to be an easy off-hand way to differentiate things in conversation. Their function isn't to express your identity or sense of inner self in the first place. Naturally, decent folk like to be considerate of other's sensitivities, and take small measures to uphold the social contract... we are social animals after all... But you're fighting an uphill battle in the first place by expecting others to do this for you, especially as a stranger. This makes it a particularly easy hill for the hateful weirdos to die on. They're not going to make sense, and it's hard to even blame them in this case, because the initial premise is them being imposed upon.

"This lady" is Michelle McDaniel. And i do realize why somebody who sees that tweet is going to assume she's transphobic and fatphobic, but it's not the case, at all! I don't have her twitter, but she has a youtube channel (My Thoughts Will Probably Offend You) and i watch her a lot on that. Be careful though cause her titles are clickbaits like 90% of time With that being said, the whole situation started because she got Demi Lovato's pronouns wrong (which, you know, happens sometimes. She didn't do it on purpose) and people started attacking her. She expressed she doesn't understand they them pronouns, probably never will, but that's okay, because she is going to respect it anyway. She respects people and their pronouns, even if she doesn't fully understand them. Still, obviously slip ups can happen, and this is exactly what that whole fuss is about. I think that tweet was made when she got emotional with the hate she has gotten. Honestly if i saw it without knowing who Michelle is i'd probably go "holy shit whoever wrote it must be uneducated and an asshole" too. She just worded her thoughts terribly

To be fair anything can offend someone as most conflicts are caused by arbitrary social constructs clashing that are supposedly opposites like the concept of liberty and the concept of authority when in reality those concepts aren't necessarily opposites, another reason is the connection one forms between a symbol or object and a concept like flags with nationality or creed.

Constitutionally? You're wrong. At least in the USA. For you to be correct, all insults ever would also be illegal within the States. Nor, as someone who prefers unusual pronouns (it/its), do I believe it should be. Any infringement on our freedom of speech could potentially be used against people if another is violated. If someone else uses the wrong pronouns, I can ignore them. The government (likely) won't give me my rights back until it threatens them as well -consider the Alien and Sedition Acts. The act which violated freedom of speech was carefully written so it would expire when the people who wrote it would no longer be in office. The bill was designed so that people could not publish articles criticizing the president or Congress. Freedom of speech is remarkably important, and even if I'm being horribly insulted, I'd always rather have it than lose it and no longer have to deal with that.

Its actually a common tactic for girls to say "i have a boyfriend" when being harassed by another man. Sometimes he wont stop unless he thinks you belong to some other man 🙄 and there are still cases where they dont even stop then. So, i dont do this. Especially because im a lesbian. What i do, while riskier, is far funnier. Men will hit on me, i politely ignore it, they continue, i reject them nicely, then when they wont stop, i just immediately dominate them, verbally. When i've been told, "just stop being a b**** !" I have said in return "funny, that's exactly what your girl told me last night." Another guy wouldn't believe that i'm a lesbian so i just said "b**** your girl calls me daddy" I always get the oddest reactions, but often, they just start scoffing and they leave. So let me get this straight (for lack of better terms) Guy flirts with girl. Girl says no. Guy persists because he does not respect the girl. Guy flirts again. Girl says she has a boyfriend. Guy backs off because guy respects other guy. (I am not forgetting WLW or NBLW relationships, but I am well aware that cishet men have a bad track record for respecting said relationships) Guy now considers girl a woman of the streets because she wishes to be faithful to her boyfriend, or rejects him in the only way he'll respect her wishes. The blatant disrespect for women could be cut with a knife. Another good way of rejecting a guy who won't respect the word "no." For legal purposes, don't cut people.

Right. I usually point out that his chances of hooking up with me are FAR lower if he offends me, and disrespecting my right to say "no" is highly offensive. Sometimes they'll wander off, then come back and try again. If this happens more than twice, I tell him he's offending me by insulting my memory retention, mental fortitude, and ability to think for myself. If he then directly insults me, I make an insinuation of him preferring people too young for consent since he insists on trying to treat me like one. The last time I had to do this, his wife later came up to me and demanded to know why I kept talking to her husband. After telling her verbatim the entire exchange, she thanked me, apologized for him, then disappeared with him somewhere.

I'm a Unitarian Christian Witch. I usually say, "happy holidays." I don't care if someone says, "merry christmas/happy holidays/happy chanukah/blessed yule," I'm just happy someone has something nice to say. The ONLY people I've seen, "waging war," around the holiday season are the ultra conservative Christians who have a problem with inclusivity. Just because other people are ALSO included, doesn't mean that you are now being excluded. And like.... I'm autistic, I tend to have an all or nothing mentality with certain things but like... acceptance and inclusion are NOT finite resources. The inclusion isn't going to be used up by the Jewish people and the pagans (nevermind the fact that MOST Christmas traditions originated from pagan festivals). Not everyone celebrates Christmas, so, "happy holidays," covers all the bases, INCLUDING Christmas and, y'know, new years too. I don't hear people getting mad at the decades old song, "Happy Holidays," either. Just when people in the service industry say it, or when people post on social media. There are more important things to be upset about, like the fact that Indigenous women are still at higher risk of abduction and murder, autistic kids are being abused with electric shocks and being locked in closet at SCHOOLS and so much more. Whether someone says, "happy holidays," instead of, "merry Christmas," is a non-problem.

The reason why I am so respectful of other people's pronouns is thanks to my mom. She had stage 4 breast cancer and had gone through a double mastectomy. She sported a shaved head because her hair had started falling out from the chemo treatments. We were at a group gathering, and she had taken off her head scarf due to the heat. Someone tapped her on the shoulder and said, "Excuse me, sir." She froze, her face crumpled, and she cried. fun fact: my first language is French. im also non-binary. in French, EVERYTHING is gendered, and there are practically no gender neutral option. I not only learned English to the point where I'm now perfectly bilingual, I also had to learn the concept of gender-neutral pronouns (they/them and it/its), which is very hard to do when you've been brainwashed all your life into thinking that male and female / masculine and feminine are the only two options for literally everything in life. but guess what? I did it. and in the end, learning a whole new language was still harder than learning how to correctly use new pronouns. so if your first language is English, and you're trying to complain about how "it's so hard to learn how to use the correct pronouns": shut up and do it already. it's not hard, you're just not trying hard enough.

This. My first language is German. It is widely gendered as well but we have the concept of an 'it' (es). We don't have a 'they' tho, or rather it's the same word as our 'she' (sie). So while it's possible to talk gender neutral, it's not. When we have separate words, grammar doesn't play along. But too often to ignore that and make it right male and neutral have the same word. Not to mention the cases (the stuff that's responsible that the male 'the' becomes female). In addition I had Spanish in school for a year. The concept of male and female only, neutral doesn't exist, was so strange. Like, how do you say anything? So yeah english speaker, you have all the words you need. It does work out. Just use it!

@@unbekannternutzer25 interestingly enough in Texas German, which is a dying dialect but still technically exists, if you don't know the gender for something you default to "die" so you default to the feminine even though the neutral exists and most languages default to the masculine - so I have no idea why that is. And yeah, as a native English speaker one of the more frustrating things about learning French, German, and Spanish is that I'm always like "what are these genders? Why are these genders? They don't even make sense!" Which is why I appreciate Texas German for the default to die thing. Unfortunately Texas people learning German as a second language and adopting Texas Deutsch mannerisms will not save the dying dialect.

This remembered me of something kinda similar I'll like to talk about, and is that Hispanic people also need to know that it's not that hard. I'm non-binary as well and also Latin American, and as a lot of people already know Spanish is a gendered language too (although, right now some of us are opened to gender neutral alternatives that are practically the equivalent of neopronouns) and the thing is, Hispanic people don't only tend do denied non-binary people existence by saying they're "people that want attention" or "people who don't like gender roles", but also they try to denied that "they/them" can be used as singular, and the thing they always say to try to defend themselves is "But I'll have to learn English all over again", and other things to victimize themselves and try to make non-binary people look like "evil woke people that want to brainwash us", and the worst part is that they look so sure when telling English speakers that they're speaking their own language wrong.

They/them aren't new words to learn, only the usage changes. Even the grammar stays the same 🤦‍♀️ Not getting better means getting worse. No matter how old someone is. If someone looks at me, they'd think "She's obese. She just needs to count calories and work out!", but sometimes, it's not that simple. Ever since I got into my puberty, I gained weight. The reason is called Lipedema. It's a disease, where your fat cells literally don't function as they should. They grow in size, press on your lymphetic system, which releases water into them, which makes them grow even more. And since it's not fat, the body CAN'T WORK WITH IT. I CAN'T loose weight from these fatcells. I tried. Before I finally got diagnosed, I counted calories, to a point where I limited my daily intake to 1000 !!!! calories a day. When I stopped loosing weight, I tried to cut this down even more !!!! I developed an eating disorder, basically becoming underweight in my attempt to gain a normal weight. I stopped this nonsense when I had a MENTAL BREAKDOWN over the beans my boyfriend ate for dinner, that I DIDN'T ALLOWED MYSELF TO EAT. I weight 85kg back then. I'm now on a constant 130kg. I count calories, I do exercise (walking or swimming), but I live a happier life and don't get myself crazy over weight I can't loose without surgery - surgery that is IMPORTANT if I don't want to end up in a wheelchair someday, but that I can't undergo right now, because there's a pandemic, and the beds are needed for people who literally fighting for survival. But here's the thing: I eat normal, healthy even. I'm a vegetarian since I was 12. Yes, I have a sweet tooth, not gonna deny that, but I try to keep it in check :D And I don't massively gain weight. So 130kg is probably my basic weight. Which means that I hungered myself down to 45kg (that's 99lbs) UNDER MY NORMAL WEIGHT. And for the longest time, it didn't even bothered me, which bothers me now! Please, be very careful before you try to pressure people into diets, when you don't know why they are overweight. There are diseases like mine, that you are born with, that you can't change yourself. And there are diseases like depression, or burn-out, that make it mentally impossible to loose weight, because you need food to balance out your mental health. I’m not overweight myself but I really hate the bullying people give to people who are. It’s not fair, there’s so many medical conditions that cause obesity and the food industry itself is encouraging it as well. Bullying never makes problems better, but yet all these people still think they should just bully anyone that isn’t skinny into losing weight. It doesn’t work that way, most people who are overweight are already aware of what they need to do, and if anything need calm and patient advice from a good doctor or nutritionist, and not an asshole on the fucking internet.

I agree. I understand the importance of making sure kids are properly educated about gender and not forced to conform to gender stereotypes, but once they have made a decision about their gender identity, it's important to respect that. @@tiaharukatrotta4881 Yeah, forcing any kind of belief of gender is never a good thing. If you're Asexual, it's not up to you to say "YOU WILL NOT CALL THEM BY SHE/HER UNTIL THEY DECIDE!" Most kids won't even know how to self identify outside of "I'm a girl, I'm a boy" and it won't be until they reach puberty that they really understand that kind of thing. The best thing you can do is "Do you like that dress? Okay, but remember, you might get picked on for being a boy. Not everyone sees dresses as a boy thing. Do you still want it? I'll support your decision." Saying that to a kid doesn't set them up for failure, it gives them insight to understand "Not normal situations, but it doesn't matter, you will love them anyway." I know a lot of people wouldn't even mention that kind of thing, but you should, because you don't want your kid to grow up bullied any more than they already are going to be. (it happens, there will always be bullying, kids are just mean) The important thing is that they understand that social constructs ARE a thing, and even if they disagree with it, Even if YOU disagree with it, there will always be someone who disagrees. This is a great example of how older generations might sound hateful on accident, simply because they weren't aware of terminology changes or new terms. It took a while for my mom to start using "trans" and "transgender" instead of "transexual" or "transvestite", purely because back in the 80's when my mom was friends with all the drag queens in san francisco and was known as the straight ally at all the gay bars and attended as many pride parades as she could, the term that was used was "transvestite". Also, information wasn't anywhere near as readily accessible as today, so the suppression of ideas and identities was far easier. As a result, even many peoole my mom says most likely were trans never identified as such, and were more likely to identify as simply homosexual, which is also where many of the stereotypes of feminine gay men and masculine lesbians comes from - many of them were trans, but without the common and accessible knowledge of what being trans is, they didn't know. Also, it was often harder to be trans than just gay, and many didn't want to suffer that way. And many people in the LGBTQIA+ society themselves would describe themselves with terms that are not okay today, like calling a butch lesbian the d slur. My mom also struggled with not using that term, because when she was young and going to clubs and such, that term was used with pride by members of the lesbian community! Many lesbians used that term to describe themselves, and did so with pride. So when my mom learned that that term has since been stolen by hateful groups and become not just an insult but a full SLUR, she was taken aback. How could that be a slur, when people FOUGHT just to use that term for themselves? Hell, even many old gays will describe themselves as femme and not mean what it means today. A lot of the words that today are hateful slurs, are that way because they were terms the LGBTQIA+ community used with pride, but because of the stance of society, those terms were picked up by hateful groups and became red flags, became dangerous. For the sake of an example, pretend the word lesbian was becoming a slur. If I called myself a lesbian with pride, and people came up to me and asked, "hey, you a lesbian?" I would likely respond with "yes, I am!". That group then proceeds to beat me almost to death, and because of society at the time, when I'm taken to the hospital and they ask what happened, they too hear me say I'm a lesbian and suddenly I'm in the waiting room when I should be in emergency surgery. And when the cops come, and I try to press charges and they ask why they did it, what was said, and I say "they asked if I was a lesbain, and I sais yes", and suddenly the cops start gaslighting, or even just walk away...the term lesbian is no longer safe. Don't call me that, because suddenly people asking if I'm a lesbian aren't just fellow LGBTQIA+ or their allies - it's people who are looking for people to hurt and even kill. And then you stop calling yourself a lesbian because now its a neon sign shouting "HEY, HOMOPHOBES! COME BEAT ME UP!" and so the community begins to shift towards a new term, while the homophobes are left using the old one they've corrupted. And because society does nothing to stop it, it becomes a slur. That's how things like the d slur became a slur, but old allies might still use it and not realize they're being anything other than a knowledgeable ally. So when, in context, an older person is using outdated terminology but doesn't appear to be hateful, simply...outdated, don't be so quick to anger. Sometimes, they're people who very much were or even are still LGBTQIA+ themselves or passionate advocates or allies, and as time progressed and society started pushing back against hate, didn't quite catch up on all of the transformations or even new additions to terminology. (Like sexualities - in the 80's, you were gay, straight, or bisexual, for the main part. Even being bisexual wasn't something that was common knowledge, and was often mocked as being either a gay who is scared to be gay, or a straight that wants attention, despite many bisexual people existing. Hell, even simply being bigender was often called being bisexual by bigender people themselves far before the 80s!). TL;DR Is basically this: over the past 100 years alone, there's been countless additions and evolutions to what terminology is used by and for LGBTQIA+ people. If someone is using a slur but not in a hateful way, don't immediately attack them - there's a chance they simply weren't aware of the change with that word!

There is one way that pronouns might enter the mix: words like "sir", "ma'am", "miss", "mister", and "mx." can be considered pronouns. Some people might begin a conversation with a retail worker by saying "excuse me, ma'am/sir", so if they're trying to do that, they may run into pronoun issues with trans retail workers. Which is understandable, but there are solutions, like dropping the ma'am/sir or equivalent and just making sure your voice is respectful when you ask for help.

Yeah that hit me really wrong. I have family members who have ignored me saying no to clothing items, not because of gender norms, but because I don't want them to waste money on something I don't want anything to do with because I'm uncomfortable with it. My boundaries are important, and having them ignored because someone wants to be cute or funny? No. Not happening. This just enforces the feeling of being attacked, and makes you hate the thing more. I was consistently given things, or teased about someone getting things, that I hated to the point of tears and furious yelling because no one would listen to me and me saying very simply, NO. Then they'd mock me for getting upset, and/or get upset themselves I didn't like the thing I said no to over and over again. The way they came out of the gate being aggressive and using hyperbole and threats to try and make their partner actually listen to them? Says this isn't a one time thing. This is consistently happening, and is super against their will. It doesn't matter if it's "just a joke" it doesn't matter if they're "cis and being silly about a gender norm" it erodes trust like wild. If you were trans and your Mom kept trying to force you into a dress you'd be pissed too if it didn't fit with how you percieved yourself. It doesn't change just because someone feels uncomfortable AND is cis. If anyone does shit like this, sit them down and talk to them about this stopping, or get the heck out. Completely agree on the "I have a bf"- excuse. So often the "claim" of another man is the only excuse that's valid. So annoying.

If I ever get in that situation, I'm going to say "I've got a *girlfriend*" just to see what happens! Being "taken" isn't the only valid argument against going out with someone? And even if one were "taken", there are plenty of poly relationships too! Geez. It's so dumb.

@@PanthereaLeonis if you get a douche (which we're assuming in this scenario) they'll ask to join or "just watch", because lesbian relationships obviously exist only for the male observer.

For those not in the know because it has been fixed by now; Marill's baby form had a weird gender percentage, and was different from Marill itself, due to this you could reasonably get an Azurill that changes gender from female to male because Azurill has a 75-25 female to male ratio, while Maril had a 50-50 gender ratio. In generation 6 it was made to where a female Azurill will keep its gender when evolving into Marill, but the gender ratio of the 3 forms in the line has remained the same since Azurill's intro in gen 3

The great thing about M&S having pronouns on badges is that they are basically the most posh large supermarket in the UK, and angry old people are going to have to see the badges. Angus from Scotrail is amazing. "Angus" was trending on UK Twitter at one point.
