People didn't bother to look into it more. Insecure men were upset about the protagonists being women heroines. And the amount of people I've seen saying stuff like "wow they have so much plot armor fighting all those powerful enemies" that's the point, it's personal fantasies that put them in power as a coping mechanism to escape from reality, and so many people failed to understand that.

The strong part about this movie is that, even though there are girls in short skirts with guns, the story doesn't evolve around that fact. Thinking about it, at the beginning, Sweet Pea says that every one has an angel, and that their form changes "One day an old man, next day a little girl." So it's obvious that the old man is Baby Doll's guardian angel, who challenges her to fight, but doesn't it also make sense that Baby Doll would be Sweet Pea's angel, the one who finally got her to fight to get free? The one who showed them all the power one can hold over the worlds they create...

It's definitely Sweet Pea's story, she's about to be labotomised at the start before she is asked to use drama as her therapy. After this, Baby Doll comes in and could very well be perceived as a figment of Sweet Peas personality/imagination. At the end of the movie, she sacrifices a part of herself when Baby Doll gets labotomised in her place so she can escape into her perceived version of safety via a cross country bus. Sweet Pea also consults the audience directly as the narrator asking the question at the end of the movie of who's story it actually is in case you've been thinking it's Baby Doll's.
