Statement from Sufjan about the song and video: It’s unfortunate that we live in a society where the value of people is quantified by likes, followers, listeners and views. So many people are seeking attention for the wrong reasons. I think we should all be doing our best work without looking for accolades or seeking reward. The main takeaway of ‘Video Game’ for me is: your worth (invaluable) should never be based on other people’s approval (ephemeral). Just be yourself. Keep it real. Keep it moving. Do all things with absolute purity, love and joy. And always do your best. Jalaiah epitomizes all of this and I’m truly inspired by her. So I thought, ‘what if we could get Jalaiah to star in a “dance video” about not wanting to star in a “dance video?”’ I’m so honored she agreed. She clearly owns it, and her work here is beautiful, poignant and true. Her dance shows incredible energy, work-ethic and spirit. She is dancing for herself, not anyone else. Her choreography is sophisticated, nuanced, and fun. She is a star. She keeps it real. She keeps it moving. She keeps it true. What a blessing!

@@plexus my read on this piece is that it's an almost sort of backlash towards media speculation towards his own life. At the same time, there's a certain amount of conflict between the lgbtq friendly aspect of his style and the faithful aspect of it. The net result is this piece, where essentially he makes a stand for both his beliefs and his privacy and right to hold them. He refuses to discount the faith due to his interpretation allowing it to coexist with his other beliefs. That's just my opinion and it only reflects 2 verses of the piece so I see where you're coming from

Patrick Gann ... my whole point is people like to call him put him into some sort of “Christian indie rock” category just because he likes to use religious allegory as themes in his lyrics... that doesn’t mean he’s “Christian rock” at all... I mean... he likes to write songs about death a lot... does that make him a “death rock” artist? He likes to write about depression... does that make him “depression rock”?... he likes to write fucking songs about geography... does that make him “geography rock” for Christ’s sake?... he’s an indie/synth/neo-folk/chamber/ambient/avant-guard/prog-Rock artist... that’s all he is... not a christian rock artist. Wanna hear what Christian rock sounds like.? It sounds like this “I wanna praise you God/I wanna lift my light to you/ I’m gonna spread the word of Jesus/ I’m gonna sit around in a pew”... that’s fucking Christian rock... All Delighted People, Age of Adz, I Want to be Well, John Wayne Gacey jr., Vesuvius, Owl and The Tanager, Sister, Adelai Stevenson, Fourth of July, The Upper Peninsula, Jacksonville, Chicago, The Avalanche, Arinka, Impossible Soul, Exploding Whale, John My Beloved, Mystery of Love, Tanya Harding, America, Rajneesh, Video Games... ... ... I’m sorry... but that’s not “Christian Rock”

oh gosh, looking forward to this. first heard sufjan from a burnt cd in 2005 that my youth pastor gave me of illinoise. he's been my favorite ever since, mostly. fell out of love with him for a bit around the bqe but my gf at the time got us tickets for the age of adz tour in LA & it was so emotional & became a fan again. got to see him play a live soundtrack to "beyond this place," as i sat about 15 feet from him, though he seemed kinda down, then got to see him in seattle on his carrie & lowell tour. what an amazing person. happy to have had him in my life for a decade & a half. super looking forward to this new album. happy to share a virtual space with all you other sufjan fans 🤍

Dear Sufjan, if I may, on behalf of the world's quieter people, call them introverts, they could be social media avoiders, thank you for this song, it's wonderful. 'I don't want to be the center of the universe. I don't want to be a part of that shame.' This line really speaks to me. Stevens doesn't have to try styles or genres that are different to what people expect him to do, he might be better advised not to from a commercial standpoint, but Sufjan's is the soul of an artist, who follows his own 'procedure.' And, such a great routine from Jalaiah!
