Greatest fight of all time. I've watched 50 times and am still incredulous of the ferocity, the frenetic pace, the skills and strategies, the stamina, and the GUTS these men displayed for FIFTEEN brutal rounds. I'm from Panama and we flooded the streets, honking horns, drinking rum, dancing and celebrating all night. There was a tremendous respect and love for SRL in Panama, but not during THAT fight haha! The hatred was INTENSE.

A great champion. I saw the fight closed circuit. It was edge of the seat for 15 rounds. I was disappointed he fought toe to toe and didn't use his speed and agility to stick and move. But he provided he could go 15 rounds with one of the best punches of the era. I saw a recent interview and he is still very articulate unlike many retired boxers where the punches took a real toll on the mental faculities.

True. Leonard had an early fight before he even won a world title where he said his siblings were good at sports while he was younger and was a homebody and a self-described "momma's boy". There's also an old article from Sports Illustrated where he mentioned he liked to read comic books at home and play w/ his German Shepherd until he started boxing.

'Blite13'. First, I want to say that it is a pleasure debating with you regarding this issue. You clearly have an understanding of the era. Makes the conversation that much better. We may have different opinions, but it is truly a joy to finally come across someone who has a functional knowledge of the sport. For full disclosure, I grew up in the D.C. & Maryland area. I'd see SRL running in the mornings on George Palmer Hwy as I was being dropped of to school. This was before the '76 Olympics. I've even had the pleasure of speaking to Mr. Cicero (SRL's Father) a couple times before he passed. They lived a couple houses down from my Uncle Leonard in Palmer Park, Md. SRL even came to my High School to raise money for our football team by playing an exhibition basketball game back in '84. My reason for disclosing this is because even with the 'hometown pride' thing I still do not hesitate to critique SRL objectively. A few of his fights I felt he held too much, danced and stayed away from his opponent too much, etc. With that being said, your responses (once again) are accurate. But (once again) don't go all the way to the heart of the matter. One, as admirable/noble as it was, Duran chose to give away a substantial amount of his earnings to Panama's poor. Sometimes as much as $10K daily. Had he controlled his finances better, he more than likely would not have felt pressured to take the fight. That's on Duran. Not SRL. Second, when Duran's manager (Eleta) called him to come back from New York to Panama to start training Duran he did so. There was just one problem...he didn't start training as he was supposed to. "As soon as I got the call from Eleta, we left N.Y. But-Big Mistake-back in Panama I kept partying." excerpt from 'I Am Duran: My Autobiography' Bottom line, as I said before. Duran lost because of Duran. Saying that a fighter needs a break/time to enjoy their success is true. I've been a boxing fan since I was 10 yrs old (1980) and knew that. However, **there is something to be said for personal responsibility**. It was actually Alexis Arguello (not SRL) that made me a boxing fan...lol. I didn't see the need to make excuses for SRL when he lost to Norris. Because SRL *chose* to step into that ring. I see no reason to offer 'reasons' as to why Duran failed in the rematch w/ SRL. Because at the end of the day...his reasons for losing were self inflicted.
@blite13
@blite13 3 жыл бұрын
thank you for that. My problem is.....when a guy says it was his strategy to get the other guy into the ring when he wasn't at his best. That shows Ray didn't think he could beat a 100% Duran. Duran was the best fighter in the world at that time and he deserved to call the shots and get into the ring when he was ready.....but he was forced by his own people, who had taken payoffs from Leonard, to take the fight. Ray had bought off Duran's corner and was manipulating Duran into the ring when he wasn't ready to fight. Duran wanted the money for sure, it was by far his biggest pay day of his life. Leonard made it so Duran wouldn't be ready, no honor. Then with Hagler, Ray waits until his legs are shot and wouldn't give Tommy a rematch until Tommy "was shot". No Honor. When both were at their best, Duran wins, period.

@@blite13 Hagler's legs were not shot in their fight. Hagler simply allowed Ray to frustrate him (Ray stayed on his 'bicycle' until he saw that Marvin's anger took away his technical ability/focus). Not saying that I agree w/ SRL's strategy. I don't. But Marvin was not 'shot' at that point in his career. SRL outsmarted Hagler. SRL won on points. On any given night the judges could favor the 'moving forward' brawler over the dancing 'pitter pat' showman. It's just a matter of what a particular judge favors. Hagler landed the harder punches (few and far between). While SRL landed more. Albeit, some of it was 'shoe shining' and more flash than substance. But he still landed more countable punches. However, if Ray had tried to go toe to toe w/ Hagler, Ray would've lost! SRL had already learned from his 1st match w/ Duran not to fight another man's fight. So why would he make the same mistake again. Yes, Ray told his brother Roger ("I think I can beat Hagler. He seems a bit slower."). But in SRL's arrogance, he too had lost a step. He just didn't care...lol. Neither fighter was in their prime. Nor were either of them 'shot'.

Leonard is the best fighter from the 80's to today. However, I don't buy his explanations for going flat-footed and toe-to-toe with Duran for most of the fight. That he got lured into this strategy by Duran's trash talk and constant curses. That the hype got to him. That's nonsense! He was the bigger guy, a natural welterweight, and had KO'd his last 5 opponents. Including total annihilations of Andy Price in the first round and Davey Green in fourth round. Meanwhile, Duran had not shown the same power at welter as he did as the undisputed lightweight champ with only 4 KO's out of 8 fights. Duran was going up two weight classes, from 135 to 147 lbs. That's a big jump. I think Sugar Ray and Angelo Dundee really believed that if Ray came straight at Duran from the start, his power would eventually be too much for Duran. Also, Dundee felt Duran was not always disciplined with his training. But on this night, Roberto performed at his absolute best, in peak form, and was the better fighter. The Sugar Ray of 5 months later would've still had a difficult fight. IMO, the reality is Duran never got close to this level again.

He underestimated Duran. All this talk about him fighting his fight because he was upset about Duran cursing and taunting him is not the whole story. Coming into the fight, Ray was seen as the bigger man, a natural 147 fighting a guy coming up from 135. He never knew Duran would be able to overpower him, much less outbrawl him. Ray was wrong in all these matters.

All this time me being a Ray Leonard fan blamed Angelo Dundee and Ray's trainer for making the decision to come out flat footed. Mr Cavett asked the main question. Opening this interview. "Who was it that decided to you to come out flat footed" When what got ray to that point was high level boxing not flat footed. Terrible game plan.

because Ray got an out of shape Duran who was in no condition to fight. Ray said it was his 'strategy' to get Duran into the ring at less than 100%. What kind of champ wants to fight his greatest rival when he isn't in shape to fight? Same with Hagler. So Ray waited for Duran to get fat, then Ray threw a ton of money at Duran's handlers to get Duran to sign for a fight they knew he could not be ready for. Duran had no legs in New Orleans, just the way Ray wanted it.

It is a banality, but nevertheless: Most of us are acting and many of us do not like themselves doing it. So being more oneself is a goal to which we may come to in age. But being on tv is something different and judging someone here is easy. Srl seems not to have been vain and he was not talking all the time. And who knows whom ma was impersonating.

Leonard was both a master boxer and a master bullshitter. Leonard had a reputation as a fancy Dan, so he thought he'd *prove* his macho credentials by going toe to toe with a fighter a full weight division below his natural weight...didn't work out and sugar got battered. Great fighter, but an unlikable and calculating man with a carefully curated career.
