It is very difficult to score a fight live when they were as quick as Duran and Leonard but, when you are able to see this fight in slow motion as I have done so many times you can see the subtle moves that Duran has. Duran was the most incredible defensive fighter, it is mind boggling to see really. From that type of vantage point it is clear that Duran should have carried a lot more rounds. Duran was one of the greatest of all time.

@MultiPolonius true but those who know the fight game know that Duran had great defensive skills every bit as great as his offense. All of the pro fighters seem to know this and will make some reference to those skills one way or the other.

@@cellopes6291 Vinny Paz joked that he fought Duran when he was 87 years old; paying homage to his 87 wins when they fought. Paz acknowledges more than once he fought an old man, and couldn't imagine how hard it would be to fight Duran when he was 25. In their 2nd fight Duran was 44 years old and Paz said he kept bobbing and weaving in the late rounds, I couldn't get to him. The term bobbing and weaving is an over simplification of what Duran does. He was a fast learner like sponge and was tought by one of the best Ray Arcel. I would have to say I have only seen two fighters in my life time that surpassed Roberto Duran's skills with both offensive and defensive skills to match, and they are Roy Jones Jr and Vasly Lomachencko.

Agreed. When Iran Barkley fought Duran he realized it was pointless to try to hit him in the head. So, although being 9years younger, 10"longer reach, and 6" taller than Duran, he decided to crouch down and use his reach advantage to pummel Duran's body. That strategy almost worked as Barkley was ahead on points until Duran knocked him down in the late rounds to get the win. The only one to really KO Duran was Hearns, who was a giant with a 12" reach advantage plus 7 years younger. I doubt Duran would have done much better even in his prime. Hearns was just too big. Despite that, I rank Duran as the best, most complete, boxer of all time.

The fight was close my ass. The bigger, younger, stronger, faster, better, olympian caliber fighter got his ass kicked by an older, slower, weaker, non olympian who had to jump up two weightclasses. Leonards face was swollen, durans face looked like he had just finished skipping rope...not a blemish. One guy was bullying the other guy for 15 rds. The person being bullied fought back, but it didnt change anything. The older, slower, smaller non olympian bully somehow kept on effectively bullying and lumping up the guy he wasnt supposed to be able to do these things to. And for those that say, "Leonard shouldve boxed him." Wtf do you think he was trying to do? Kiss him? Leonard tried everything and nothing was working. Leonard did not want to dance around duran because angelo dundee was afraid that duran would catch leonard on the end of his punches and possibly ko leonard. So the plan was to "turn" duran, while smothering him so he cant get off effectively....it didnt work. When ray tried to dance, he got caught by a vicious rt cross in rd 4, JUST like dundee thought would happen, and now, leonard is fucked. He had to deal with all of that in his head for 15 rds. I give him great credit for manning up and fighting back with everything he got. He found out that night, he wasnt a pretty boy anymore. He was a warrior too.

Even when Duran lost his opponents (always way bigger than he was but they looked like they took a beating. P4P Roberto Duran has been consistently for decades ranked over SRL. The reasons why are some of which you pointed out. I saw a black and white video of Duran from a show hosted by Bill Gallo in the seventies. I think ABC was hosting a boxing show and they were ranking the top three fighters in each of the respective divisions within the boxing weight divisions through the entire history of the sport. When they got to the lightweight division, they showed Duran getting cornered or so it seemed so against the ropes. In normal play speed it was hard to see what was happening, but it looked liked his opponent was hitting Duran with a barrage of punches. It was an incredible to watch and learn when they showed it in slow motion. Barely ANY of those punches were hitting Duran at all. Almost all of them missed and they counted over 10 punches. Next Duran did a move what they now call his Waltz move. Duran spins it around and now has his opponent on the ropes, the difference is his punches were connecting. I was hooked after that; huge fan of Duran !!!

@swmita3 жыл бұрын
@@rakim6466 "Ray beat eem with ease the second and third time because he adapted". Let's put this in perspective. Duran had almost 80 fights when he 1st fought Leonard in his absolute prime. Most fighters barely can make it to the 40 win mark before their career petered out. Ironically Leonard barely made to 40 wins before he was knocked out by Hector Camacho. People make excuses for Leonard by saying Leonard was past his prime, but IF Leonard stuck around in any one division long enough we would have seen a few more losses for sure. BTW Leonard took that fight with Camacho after he saw an old 44 year old Duran knocking down Camacho and what proved to be a close controversial scoring of a close fight. Second point of contention is that Leonard had an 8 inch reach advantage and almost three inches in height over Duran. Very few fighters today if any at all could fight at Duran's pace which is the reason why he won over 100 fights. Duran took the risk and climbed up way past his comfort zone. SRL was a great fighter but never accomplished and took as many risks as Duran did and was successful at that. And that IS why Duran consistently gets ranked in the top 5 P4P over SRL for decades.

@@swmita I think it should be clearly pointed out (and you most certainly have done this so I'm just reiterating), that what Duran accomplished with this victory was nothing short of extraordinary. Anyone who knows Duran's career knows that Duran was not Duran after he left the LW division. From WW all the way up to MW Duran was more often than not going up against way bigger guys. He commanded bigger purses n more tv time...the darling of the press n media, while Duran tho known as the best fighter pound per pound had to jump up a full division to get bigger purses, beg for more exposure on American tv. I seen it all about these two...interesting times. Cosell tried to vilify the ref cuz his boy lost...but watch the film...it's Leonard whom did most of the holding, . Duran was crazy at times come fight time...but personally he was generous to a fault to his own people...some even called him the Robin hood of panama...it was a great fight, maybe the best I've ever seen as far as pace, strategy, slugging n boxing, n defence..but no one Denies Robertos determination and forcefulness in dictating the outcome. Duran won fair and square and rocked and hurt Leonard many times . Leonard being the narcissist that he always is got his ass kicked. The No mas fight was a fiasco and Duran did not train properly and was forced to take the fight. Roberto Duran is a great fighter and legend. I respect Ray, but Ray is spoiled and arrogant and always wanted to call the shots.

Duran took the 10 mill and walked. Ray says that 'win' has never satisfied him......wonder why? Duran today says the 2nd fight was all about the money. Ray was happy with that because he could get his title back by fighting his biggest rival when his biggest rival could not be ready for the fight.

Three judges scores the fight all in favor of Duran. Leonard found that fighting a street fighter is a whole lot of differences then fighting a boxer. (Street fight is anything & everything)(boxing is got styles, rules & respect for each other) you do not respect any bully fighters in and out of the ring. Most of all, don't ever forget that as a professional fighter.

Duran has cocaine voice, you can see he was partying hard already after the fight. Duran had hit the peak of his career, 70+ fights into it and he wanted to celebrate his win, for a while. His own people sold him out to Ray, forced him to sign for a rematch that he could not be ready for.....Ray bought the belt back.

Howard Cosell...an egomaniac if there ever was one, shows his ignorance here, basically accusing Carlos Padilla one of the greatest refs in the buisness (you know the one who refereed the thrilla in manilla??) of favoring Duran and letting him "fight his fight"...lol...what an ignoramus...in fact it was Leonard who fought Duran's fight and he got beat simple as that. You dont break the fighters when they are inclose if they are still throwing punches or they have their hands free. Very bad on the part of Cosell and showed his bias big time.

well .... a common attitude of Americans to find something wrong rather than just accept the fact that their fighter got his mother fucken ass kicked real good by a much better fighter .... ! in the second fight Duran quit when he saw that Leonard did not want to fight even when he cheated to get Duran to fight ....! and Leonard knew he did not win that fight fair and square .... to be the best you have to beat the best at their best .... and Leonard knows to this day that he chickened out in the second fight because he knew he could never beat Duran fair and square ....!

One of the best fights ever. It was incredibly close. I had Duran winning by one point but it really could have gone either way in my opinion. A lot of the rounds were hard to score. I ended up scoring 4 rounds even. Leonard went into this one angry though and it cost him. He thought he could fight in the pocket, flat footed and slug it out with Roberto and he could but he came up short. He put his ego aside and fought his fight in the rematch though, forcing Roberto to quit. This era was boxing at it's best.

Sorry Howard, a D- in your coverage in this prize fight. Just a pre-fight huddle or a common sense briefing "between the judges and the referee to prevent any mistakes or misunderstandings. Howard Cosell made a big deal about the referee. Padilla did an excellent job. The fight was heated and the last thing a referee wants to do is kill the momentum and action. It's not the duty of the referee to favor one style over another and often referees can kill one fighter by breaking them too soon.

4:45... So that means the same robbery against Hagler was similarly biased in the scoring? Well, EFFECTIVE PUNCHES, ring generalship and defense are also supposed to factor in scoring. Duran exhibited all 3 in this fight considerably better than Leonard did. In that respect it was one- sided. Never did Leonard dominate, although he had his share of moments... They were definitely P4P #1 and P4P #2 that night. It is equally clear that Duran came up 2 weights and did this. Nothing short of phenomenal.

Very good fighter but SRL isn't among the all time greats. Too much time away from the ring and too much showbiz and flash. The Hagler fight was a travesty.
