My continued log of trying to grow some sugarcane in containers in Lincoln Nebraska. I figured I would make a little video diary to see how it goes and keep people updated if interested.
I moved these outside middle of May so they got close to 5 months of growing time in.
I didn't do as much updates this year as it was pretty much the same process as last year. However I did get better results from the second year plants. Which I have read that is pretty typical.

Nice video!! I've been wanting to plant in a container but wasn't sure what size to get. Looks like the bigger the better growth.

@@lofenoialof5320 They will not die when it gets that low in temp, but they will also not grow. If it gets to 32 expect them to die, unless you can cover them well overnight.

What type and ratio of Nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus so you use? I’m growing sugar cane in florida and growth slowed after three months.
@hutsadyk
@hutsadyk 3 жыл бұрын
I've noticed P and K don't really help. I go heavy on N and when I fertilize I use a N heavy liquid fertilizer like Alaska Fish Fertilizer in liquid. I use a fertilizer with P and K maybe once per season. Temps and amount of direct sunlight could have slowed growth as well

@hutsadyk

@@roscoemeyers3023 I don't weekly. Since I grow in containers they are more prone to losing nutrients as water works through them. Even then I only fertilize once every 2-3 weeks.

Why did you put a plastic tub under each pot?
@hutsadyk

once it got hot and they started really growing they were very thirsty and those pots would dry up in a day or two. I never saw any root rot, so I recommend doing it as well

I live in St Louis Mo and was thinking they would be difficult to grow here. Your growing them in Nebraska so there is hope. Where would I look for pieces of sugarcane to start my cane garden?

@hutsadyk 4 жыл бұрын
@@billpreiss Yah I would be fine doing that, however not until the spring. If I did it now it would require cutting down plants that are getting mature but not quite there. The new plantings would be small and probably not make it through the winter even indoors.
