Sugarcane Propagation

Ever want to be self sufficient and grow your own sugar? Honey may be easier but sugarcane is fun to grow in Florida. You can propagate sugarcane by cuttings. Just stick one or two nodes in a pot and wait about 2 months for it to grow. To eat the sugarcane peel the woody edges and shew on the sweet middle part. Its good if you cut it into small chewing sticks.

I've been waiting to find sugar cane and I actually found a whole stock at our local food city for 3:99 it's from Mexico an were Arizona so I think the weather would work! So excited to grow this. Blessings

Chop up the sugar cane up and boil in water for hours until syrupy. That's how we extract the sugar in Hawaii, without a juicer. Easy.

Is there a specific time of the season to propogate the cuttings? I’m in zone 9 so just curious if it’ll grow right now in June as the summer’s already here.

I'm in zone 9 too, my dad grows them easily so I asked for cuttings and on my way now! Think you'll enjoy it too

In zone 9 you can do sugarcane any time of the year. I would avoid making cuttings when the temperatures will be below 45 degrees F.

dont the underground nodes put out roots? There should be rooted plantlets growing from the clump that you can divide off; no cuttings needed.

Yes, but they are a little harder to get too. It also depends how many cuttings you want. They propagate easy so I don't make too much extra effort.

Yes sugarcane is a very hardy plant. It should still grow even if some of the nodes are damaged. Give it some time to grow and at least a few nodes should sprout.

Does sugar cane favor a certain weather type. Im in California so i dont think i have anything to worry about

Sugarcane likes subtropical or tropical weather. It can withstand a light freeze but not a heavy freeze. If the weather is going to get very cold, below freezing you can cover the plant in mulch overnight or for a day or two.

There are over 100 varieties of sugarcane, I'm not sure which one this one it. It has a yellow-green stalk, so thats one identifying characteristic. You can get a cutting from a friend or try an edible plant nursery that ships such as Green Dreams or A Natural Farm.

After you plant the sugar cane cuttings water them maybe every other day or twice a week. You want to keep the soil moist and let it dry out between waterings. Don't overwater or it may rot.

I don't have much of a problem with ants in my cuttings, maybe cover with a light layer of mulch or put your pot or propagation table in saucers of water.
