Is this why so many care so muc about wether or not Kanji is gay and Naoto is trans?
@phosphorescenceking61143 жыл бұрын
I mean, there's no such thing as reading into things too much if the evidence all connects smoothly. When people throe around terms like "overanalyzing" they're actually talking about people who make shit up without backing up their claims with real evidence. A decent analysis will always tell if some interpretation probably wasn't intentional.
@jacobfoxfires96473 жыл бұрын
Yeah that pretty much hits it dead center. Persona fans either don’t get a simple storytelling narrative, or read into the lines TOO literally. Which is kinda sad cause the series is just involved so much in symbolism and deeper meanings. But very rarely will get the so called “fans” to get it. Similar to Danganronpa in that sense.
@onimaxblade89883 жыл бұрын
@@returnedtomonkey8886 I still stand by that Kanji is pretty bi-sexual. But with Naoto.... Yeah, a big part of the point is that she's *not* trans, and people who *insist* on that are strange. But I don't dislike the discourse around that interpretation. There's way too many relatable things for people who struggle with self image in general, and especially with gender roles and expectations and all that stuff for that reading to just be shunned out of conversations. It'd be really easy to have a slightly different character who *was* trans. Same thing sort of happens with Lukako in Steins;Gate. In both instances too, I am actually somewhat a fan that the conclusion isn't that they're trans too. For one, it's rather open and demonstrates that not just trans people have these sorts of struggles with self-identity. And secondly, I have met plenty of people who do have arcs like those characters. It's a lot like the Yukiko case, in which they think the answer and what they're looking for is one thing, but the true answer after shifting through all the options and feelings is something else entirely. That's my take on the whole situation. People should accept and work with canon, but the interpretations aren't misguided or invalid, and that's part of what's cool about the characters.
@MagillanicaLouM3 жыл бұрын
@@phosphorescenceking6114 of course the series has been deep as heck from jump and warrants huge analyses like Snickety Slice's ongoing series. @@FullMetalSnorlax why is that cringe? These kind of things happen all the time in all societies. A huge example in America is college, the importance and constant emphasis on college makes lots of teens feel like they don’t have a choice about going. Many parents will imply that getting married and having kids is a necessary step of life. I myself know how that feels, because they say it so much that you think attempting to break away from that idea will make them think less of you or see you as a failure. The inn is no different. If yukiko was told from a young age things like “you should learn this thing because you’ll inherit the inn one day” constantly, then yeah, she would probably feel like it was a heavy expectation. What I see in Yukiko's social link is also this. Her Shadow was her asking for someone to help her and solve her problems for her. Yukiko did just that during her Social Link, she went to Yu seeking help to free her from her cage of Yasu-Inaba. As she progresses through her Social Link she realises she's just doing the same thing with Yu as she tried to do the rest of her life, and her choosing to stay at the inn from her own volition was her deciding to get herself out of her rut without relying on someone else to help her. I feel like a few Social Links in Persona have this which might be why they feel so strange to some people, the characters are still doing these things their shadows were showing off but in more subtle ways because *cough* accepting yourself doesn't instantly mean you changed yourself *cough*

I've always liked Yukiko because I'm the type of person who laughs openly at a stupid joke only I find funny, because what's the point in keeping it in? She's straight-forward, honest, and cackles like a maniac and I find that incredibly endearing. I want to point out that even more obvious than the cage, Shadow Yukiko doesn't get tossed into the castle in her commercial. She excitedly runs into it, hoping some stud comes in and fixes her problems for her! It can easily be compared to some of the other Shadow intros, where they are fully embracing their inner qualities by running further into the depths. If Yukiko wants so desperately to leave, why does her Shadow choose to stay? And wow, I did not know Pat was so hard on Yukiko. And that fanbase certainly know how to dogpile on people with differing opinions. But I don't think it's rare for people to be analytic of things that resonate with them and then to be callous to things with similar depth that do not. Unfortunate, yeah, but not at all uncommon.
@abadenoughdude3002 жыл бұрын
She says she doesn't want to inherit the inn and wants to run away but is too passive and indecisive so she just talks (her shadow even throws it in her face when they confront). Eventually she matures to actually decide for herself and that's the message of her link - not giving up to do what others tell you to but to make a conscious choice about your life. I think people hate on Yuki so much not because they misunderstood her but because they're projecting. When you identify with a character that just sits on their ass and whines about how they hate their life while doing nothing about it like they do and when that character chooses to actually be an adult rather than a whiny brat they take that as treason, I guess. I mean, anyone can dislike a character, but the game's writing is nowhere near complex enough for a character to be that misunderstood.

Interestingly Makoto from Persona 5 has a very similar "return to the start" character arc, I think its something intrinsic to The Priestess archetype in the eyes of Atlus. In-game (or was it the anime?), Yukiko mentions how she doesn't like her name since it means "snow". I was never particularly interested in Yukiko back in the day, but over time the pure novelty appeal of a character that was not well liked or talked about won me over. She's not boring, per say, and so I started to find her charming because I couldn't pin down what exactly her charms were. As for her story, I was always most interested in the why of it all. I mean, Chie's story is also tied to Yukiko's and happens in her castle. The TV concept of the game also harps on how people view the world through the fuzzy lens of TV and media rather than seeing true reality, and I think Yukiko's concept of someone coming to make her choices for her partially stems from the countless fictions young girls consume that basically say exactly that. But yeah, we have to remember the sort of mental state Yukiko was in. Chie was abusing their relationship and constantly clipping her wings to make herself feel more powerful, she was damaging Yukiko's confidence and self worth for a long time due to her own insecurities. I think one of the most telling things is that Yukiko never interpreted Chie's abuse tactics as the forces that were seeking to control her, like she thought her family and community were. She liked that Chie was making her choices for her, so she interpreted Chie as one of her princes. They both played off each other's worst traits. Their story lines also mimic each other in clever ways, with Chie's S Link being about developing mental and emotional strength and confidence, while Yukiko wanted to develop practical skills, to the same end. Inseparable foils.
@jacobfoxfires96473 жыл бұрын
Ehhhhh, wouldn't really call Chie's attitude as being abusive. Overbearing yes. Almost like an overprotective nanny. Cause I don't think all Chie did were conscious decisions. But were definitely feelings she did had. Feeling inferior but taking some pleasure in Yukiko's reliance, but mistaking that for a genuine friendship and her wanting to protect Yukiko from creeps and such. But other than that those points fit well. They had some bad traits that played off one another that made each other worse. They overcompensate and end up developing some problematic attitudes. That people view them in a stereotypical light and just make brash assumptions of her. Which also relates to her shadow being an over the top representation of her actions and views. Both being right but also wrong. Which was a major theme for the game and the bosses everyone of the party members fight in.
@phosphorescenceking61143 жыл бұрын
@@jacobfoxfires9647 I'm refer to it as "abuse" because the characters and the game recognize her behavior as negative, something she was doing that was wrongful. To be fair we don't see the full extent of her behavior, we see a few instances of her teasing and clipping the wings of Yukiko, making fun of her in front of new friends, saying things in public that made Yukiko visibly uncomfortable, and stuff like that. Obviously none of the people were evil, like, consciously hurting others, but it was still wrongful behavior.

Honestly, I never had an issue with Yukiko as a character. I would say that while she does seem the most “oblivious” and straightforward at times (but obviously not beating out Kanji and his drive to make Yusuke feel uneasy over misunderstandings), she is definitely on of the most caring team mates on the team. If anything else, this video does help to show that in the end, she was able to make her own choices rather than it being forced upon her. Of course, had Yu not shown up and/or the whole situation with the TVs not happen, then she probably would have gone through life feeling the inn was always going to be her responsibility, but she does find out later that if she it is one that she can choose to inherit rather than it feel like a weight strapped to her ankle. Hope we get to see more “persona character” videos in the future. Not for Naoto per ce, but others could be nice to see. ^__^

I wish we saw Makoto doing more out of school, some kind of computer lab or educational trip would be cool. Her intelligence is often stated but she just plays second fiddle to Futaba in the "socially awkward genius" slot. Having the two interact more would also be cool, but that may happen in StrikerS and I just haven't seen it yet.

Something like, how Fuuka started from being shy and timid and hiding her love of computer tech/mechanic stuff because it doesn't seem feminine. Then she became more brave in making her own choices and more open to show her interest. (Yeah, I'm bad at describing)

As a former yukiko hater. Honestly it was more so cause she reminded of myself too much lol. When I actually finished her social link when I did golden I definitely started to like her a lot more. There's a significant difference between being made to do something and choosing to do it. Even if it's the exact thing you've been doing your whole life. Doesn't mean you've regressed. It just means you're making it your own and not something decided for you.

I think yukiko is most relatable towards asian culture and its society. I noticed that most people elsewhere only finds her as just a waifu of some sort. Sad really to hear that people hate on her when all of the characters in persona relate to someone, somewhere in the real world. I think that's what's best about this game. You're free to choose which path in search for the truth you wish to take. Which characters you wish to open up and discover. For me, she's the best girl in the game. I never leave her out of my roster. Hehehehe! Yay yukiko!!!

Huh, I always read the conclusion of Yukiko's link as her maturing to face the responsibilities and expectations everyone thrusts on her and the fact of her deciding to inherit the ryokan after all to be her OWN CHOICE, not her giving up. Hell, if anything is to be considered giving up it's the "someone take me away" - that's not even deciding consciously to leave, it's waiting for others to decide for you. Making a choice after long deliberation is the mature thing to do here, not "I don't know what I want but this ain't it, waaaaah!". And I didn't need to know every symbolic nuance to understand that about her arc.

This is great! As a fan of Persona 4, I'm a huge Yukiko stan for years. You really got it going with the misconceptions she gets in this video. One thing I think is a criticism of Persona 4 is culture clash. The game takes place in a society and culture vastly foreign from the Western experience. Even the great localization from Atlus USA cannot translate _every_ Japanese reference, joke and so forth. In Japan, she's a lot more popular among the fanbase, but again, it's a cultural standard. One example would be her character design; she's modeled as a "yamato nadeshiko" in mind, but that term doesn't really exist outside of Japan, so it makes sense that concept would be lost on Western audiences.

I can actually relate to Yukiko a little. There was this one time my dad got upset that one of my grades were lower than usual, and I got rightfully upset. My dad did eventually come to not care about my grades as long as I was passing, but the thing was, I just didn’t know it. So even though he wasn’t gonna get upset over a B anymore, I thought that he still was. So then I basically just imposed this straight A standard onto myself because I thought my dad was. And this kinda lasted for like three years before I got the hint when my grades were the lowest they’ve ever been. This actually applies to a lot of other things in my life that I didn’t really know until now, but a lot of the issues I had with myself stemmed from me trying to fit into a standard that no one was really trying to put me on. But doing it anyway because I thought that’s what they wanted. It’s sounds like a very specific problem to have, but it’s a really easy mindset to get into if you’re not aware of it. Tbh I kinda wish I took this the lesson of her social link to heart the first time around, couldve saved a lot of unnecessary stress. Sorry for rambling, great video!

I don't know why it's hard to get Yukiko's character. She feels like her life and decisions are taken from her because of her inn and how she feels she will be forced to inherit and run it. Hell, even her shadow self shows an unhealthy mentality, what with her feeling like she wants to be saved from her situation but unwilling to take self actualization to free herself from her situation. She feels like she _should_ inherit the inn, that she _should_ continue it's long history, and that not doing so would wrong and selfish. Essentially, she wants someone to take the choice away from her since she doesn't want to do something she feels she should do. It's a conflict between what she feels is right to do with what she wants to do and the hope someone will simply make the choice for her so she can still be morally righteous while being selfish.

You said something that I just realized about P3 and P4. In Persona 3 a Social Link could be inverted by the player not hanging out with friends or by saying the wrong thing. In Persona 4, instead of being inverted by the player's choice of action, the holders of the arcana start with shadows that are already reversed. This gives the characters in P4 more depth because this is something they're coming to terms with, not you making the action that inverts them. P3 also had something cool where the main characters could awaken to their Personas without the aid of the protagonist, but I think P4 is more balanced. I still don't like all the decisions of P4 like some of the characters (Yukiko, Rise was a little annoying, Yosuke picked on Teddie a little much) but this was an awesome video! Thanks😀😀👍

You forgot to mention the funniest part of her connection to Amaterasu. Most of her “locked in a cave” stories involve either a female strip tease or her falling in love with her own beauty via a mirror. The latter could be her being aware of her beauty and seeing it as a curse, but growing to appreciate it like Amaterasu, while the former is almost always used to tie her lesbian undertones to Chie. Naoto doesn't literally want a sex change, nor is Kanji gay. And even if they are, it's not the *point.* The point is that they're insecure about who they are and who they want to be, like all kids their age. Naoto wants to be taken seriously in her field (which is dominated by men), and Kanji just wants to be accepted by society for his "feminine" interests. Their Personas are literally created by them accepting the parts of themselves they're uncomfortable with and wouldn't want to even acknowledge without the help of Narukami and the rest of the party. I don't understand how people are so confused about this. Pursuing truth is the theme of the game and its central to every plot event and character within it. The point with Yukiko is that she wants to do what she wants, and after some soul searching, she relizes that her true desire was to run the inn, but *only* because she genuinely *wants* to and not because she's being *made* to. It makes a huge difference, and it's possible that she's misunderstood because the people who play the game are spiteful that they, also, feel like they're stuck in a situation in life they see no way out of... and also failing to realize that the chains holding them down are either non-existant, or of their own creation. So they instead complain, because they're losers. They're upset that they can't be strong like Yukiko grows to be and make their own decisions in life.

@@ChiefMedicPururu That's the worst possible outcome, too. Failure to acknowledge our own weaknesses in to remain a child forever, and never grow. What's the point of going through life without learning anything and refining oneself? Isn't that the reason fiction exists in the first place? It's a canvas for a creator to explore ideas they wish to express. The Persona series is so good because it's specifically about self-actualization, and using it for good as the characters enter adulthood. It's an evergreen formula, so if people aren't gonna meet a fictional character halfway by at least pretending to understand what the creators are trying to say, why do they bother with the game at all? Maybe if these people stopped and listened rather than complain so much, then perhaps they'd learn something as grow as people, themselves.

Honestly feels pretty similar to how I feel about the discussion around Ann early on in 5. Yes, she dresses up in a super tight cat suit in an arc about sexual assault, but this is her way of taking that power back from the abuser and becoming more confident, which is perfectly showcased by her destroying the fake image of herself Kamoshida created when she transforms. The fact that she's dressed provocitavely doesn't matter, it's the fact that this is her own choice to do so that's so important. It's Ann's own way of expressing herself and rebelling against society, by taking back her own image in her own way. It's also worth noting this design is meant to be based on Tatsunoko villainesses, which Ann actively says she admires in her social link for being so confident and strong-willed.

Yeah. I wouldn't be surprised people would misunderstand Yukiko like that. For me, seeing Yukiko for the first time, I immediately could see myself through her and pretty much could relate to a lot of her problems. Because for a long while I also thought I was just someone who just listens to other people on how to run my life and I also felt completely trapped and suffocated by the coddling of my mother and I felt so withdrawn with myself I didn't exactly show myself to others except to the ones closest to me. And yeah. I also felt like a doll because of all that as well as my appearance. I am aware of the beauty I have because people keep telling me about it, so I do have to deal with attention from boys and strangers which is really uncomfortable, I have to say since I've never been in a relationship before.

I honestly didn’t like yukiko that much because the storyline for her never felt like it developed. It’s not because of the fact that she changes her mind at the end but rather that every day with her felt like the same “I don’t know what to do” or “I don’t know how I feel” without ever really diving into it. I got the point behind it all but it felt monotonous near the end and I just never felt like she showed me anything new during the entire thing. Rise is a good example of what I’m trying to get at. She had the same problem with choosing a life until it was forced on her to make a choice. She decides to stay where she’s happy but that sacrificed basically everything she’s done up to that point and she freaks out. It felt very disturbing, very potent, and made me actually feel a connection to her. I just wish that yukiko had something like that, maybe not as drastic, but what happened at the end never really gripped me like rise. I was left with disappointment more than anything.

I think the problem with Yukiko that alot of people (including myself) has had is how painfully boring and underutilized she is. While yes alot of her character is very misunderstood, she is very overshadowed in the main story. While that may apply to alot of the party members in persona 4, it applies to yukiko much more as she is by far, the character with the least entertaining/important dialogue among the cast. The problem with yukiko to me was never that she was a bad character, but more so because of just how much she is outshined by everyone around her. I think this issue is exemplified later in the game and in spinoffs, where yukiko eventually turns into a person who has a few lines in the conversation, and needs to be played up as something she blatantly isn't (like many characters in persona spinoffs).
@MagillanicaLouM3 жыл бұрын
This is a very valid complaint yeah. It's kind of an inherent hurdle with how 4&5 are structured, it will just seem like every character has their arc and the ones that don't obviously directly contribute much to the conflicts after get shafted by later characters. I personally think 5 is a bit better than 4 with it though, as I can still vouch for the characters most commonly thought to suffer hard of this symptom after their initial arcs. But that's also probably because 5 is more consistently putting it's plot to the forefront than 4 does. Either way, still prefer how 1-3 handle things though. Gives more room for overarching plot and individual characters to do their thing

I've never really hated or liked Yukiko, but this video highlights my problem with people's interpretation that Kanji is gay. There may be a lot of hints of his sexuality, but nothing is really confirmed one way or another, and yet people keep debating whether he's straight or gay or fluid or bi or whatever, like that's the most important thing about him. My takeaway with Kanji has always been the same takeaway I had with Yukiko and the rest of the cast: *WHO THE HELL CARES.* One of the big lessons of P4 is that you are far more complex than a simple label, and you have to stop labelling yourself or allow others to label you. Be who you want to be, keep discovering who you want to be, and keep finding ways to change and be happy. The flip side of that lesson is that you should stop labelling other people too, and if they're happy with their lives they've chosen for themselves, then accept it, and be happy for them.

She's born into a wealthy family, is loved by all of her looks, generally well liked just overall; has so much going for her. Yet she's scared about making choice's for herself. Like, if she really wants couldn't she just hire someone to take care of the place while she does what she wants? She has so much available to her and her palace in my eyes is her whinning about how much she has available to her. Like I find that annoying, every other member of the crew has legitimate issues I can get behind while her's just don't work for me even after going through this vid. I'd say it is similar to the story of someone going to the big city to see what they can do, but eventually figuring out that they loved the life they had in the rural town life. even if you come home after, you still made the journey to find that out, she felt that was never an option. She may have wanted to, even grew up wanting to, but as she got older, it got harder to, even crippling herself by relying on Chie, having her make the choices with her headstrong attitude. They where the one they wanted to be, or so they thought, but really, they just had to accept themselves, and improve the way they thought of their lives.

None of this was lost on me, but I didn't know about the mythology. Excellent video, mate.

As a fan of both Blazblue and Japanese mythology, that reaction to Susanoo is pretty on point for both.

What a great analysis video! I had no idea people were so decisive on Yukiko... She's great! Her Social Link was a bit confusing, but now I understand it better. Never knew there was so much symbolism behind her character!

I had no idea she's not well liked in the west before. I'm not Japanese, but I'm still within that Asian spectrum that recognize that Yukiko's growth took some real strength I was the same way as her when I played it. I wanted to go and run away from everything, and the end of Yukiko's S. Link was amazing, she decides to stay and take her responsibilities VOLUNTARILY, that was very admirable to me. So apparently in the west, the ones who we see as 'fleeing' is the ones regarded as strong huh... that's an interesting difference in our cultures

I actually really like Yukiko before but listened to the masses and grew to become indifferent to her but always kept in the back of my head that she consciously made the decision to take on the inn which kept me from straight up hating her. Thanks for this video I feel like I can open up to how I originally felt!!!

She only made that decision due to peer pressure. This video neglects to mention how people around town liked her and constantly reminded her that they EXPECTED her to inherit the inn, this is what inherently made her feel trapped the key factor that wore her down into giving the inn another shot. She never hated the idea of running the inn, just the expectation that she should, but frankly it looks like she's going to run that place into the ground so long as she's doing the cooking there.

@@FullMetalSnorlax I don't run any inns personally, but I figure the head of one as staffed as the Amagi's won't have to be anywhere near the stove ever, aside from checking in on the actual cooks now and again. So I doubt her lack of cooking ability factors in much lol
