You have to admire a man that sings a song as close to the album version as humanly possible in his 60s from an album made in the 80s.

Cool story time: I was working 3rd shift as a telephone operator on an Air Force Base. The only other person would just read her bible and not talk to me. So I asked to bring in a small boombox to listen to. I played mellow stuff:Van Halen, Scorpions, Aerosmith. Co worker told me if I kept listening to devil music, that I'd go to hell. The next night I brought in Merciful Fate - Don't Break the Oath. Thought she was going to run out of the office.

Man, there were never and never will be anyone other then King Diamond who can do THAT with his male voice. He is the one and only. If you add the fact that he writes all lyrics and composes all of his songs - that makes him the superhero of heavy metal genre. King Diamond was by far my favorite band back then in 80-s era till his "The Eye" 1990 album. There were 5 albums by King Diamond and 2 albums by Mercyful Fate - all together that was something never heard before, something completely original and great. If you dig into King Diamond you will be amazed by his legacy and input to everything we have now in the heavy genre

I couldn’t wait to see both of your reactions to King Diamond. I am a big fan of King Diamond. Like you both said, at first I was taken aback by his voice and wasn’t sure but within the first song I became a fan. No one else quite like the King. I consider him, also, the Alice Cooper of metal. His vocal range also reminds me of Rob Halford a bit. Can’t wait to watch you react to more from The King.

King Diamond has some if the best riffs in metal you'll ever hear. Every single song is chock full of quality riffs and amazing guitar solos, heavy and melodic, never more or less than needed for the song. And the drumming always crisp and on point, fills galore. I always said if I could have a band with a certain heavy metal sound, I'd like it to sound like King Diamond. Check out LOA House, or Magic, or A Mansion in Darkness. Great headbanging songs, and when they do they're acoustic songs or interludes, nothing better

Always entertaining to see people react to King Diamond for the first time. You are correct in that it is very theatrical in that all King’s albums (excluding The Spider’s Lullaby and Fatal Portrait) are concept albums and thus tell a horror story on each album. Oh, and speaking of Fatal Portrait I think Chels’ looks like the portrait on the Fatal Portrait album artwork. However both those albums have songs that are linked conceptually, but not the whole album. Yeah digging into King Diamond catalog would be a good idea.

This song is just a piece of part 2 of the story that begins with the album "Them". King Diamond sings a lot of ghost stories, occult themes, and historical witch/religious dark history material, in a metal operatic presentation. King Diamond is a funny case of both music styles and yes obviously, his vocal style. King has been around since the early 80s with the band Mercyful Fate. They pit out I think 2 or 3 albums at first, then King went into his own solo career under the ironic name King Diamond in like 1985 I believe. Mercyful Fate broke up when this happened after they released an album with some other vocalist that obviously didn't go off very well. But King later returned to Mercyful Fate in like 1994 if I recall, and they put out 4 or 5 more albums before once again disbanding in 2000. But King went on with his solo stuff all throughout the 80s, 90s, and 2000s. His last album was released quite a while ago, but he's working on putting out a new album soon. Now then, about his vocals. When he first came on the scene in the 80s, his high pitched vocals were really different than anything else, and didn't quite fit in with anything else at the time, so it was kind of a hit or miss with many Metal fans then. I know it was for me. But now, after nearly 40 years of all different types of Mefal out there, his vocals are just normalized by today's standards. The music between Mercyful Fate and his solo stuff remains about the same. Progressive heavy metal. But to might not be shown ked to learn that Mercyful Fate was considered the First Wave of Black Metal. But of course the Scandanavian countries took over the Black Metal crown with their style, so now poor old King Diamond is just progressive heavy metal for the most part.
