Chasing Plexi tone is a passion. So many good amps out there go for that sound. Suhr is one of the builders that gets it right. They can Angus, they can Jimi and Jimmy, and they can Eddie, etc 😎 My nephew and I got the soldering iron out today and changed the JMP 1987 clone a bit. The builder here in NZ had it set up like the '67 curcuit and with fancy stuff like mustard caps etc. Closer to a JTM 45 than a JMP 1987 Plexi. I set it up with a split cathode and added the 500pf bright cap. There's a bit of noise in the treble channel I need to sort out, but it became a gain monster. I am not quite sure why yet. It overdrives from zero on the treble channel volume control, although his JB in the Les Paul was pushing it. He began playing A Touch Too Much and Hell's Bells. A little tweak of the controls and we had the Angus sound (Angus tone, not Malcolm's). Very, very loud. It would have been insane if we tried boosting it etc. We stopped after two ten minute bursts, or the police would have knocked on the door I think. Like Marshall amps or hate, them, that kerrang is the sound of rock (for the most part). Both of us were just grinning for ages after. Moral of the story? If you have not tried a non master volume Marshall JMP amp loud, then do yourself a favour and try it. There's nothing quite like it. Like Eddie said, "volume is tone". 🤘 P.S. Friedman is launching a Plexi style amp soon. Namm I think. I wonder if it will have the thing his BE-100 amps do. I have an IR-X. The BE channel has the thing for sure. Hit the strings lightly and it mostly cleans up, but hit them hard and it can do the tight as eff chug and the pinch squeals etc. It's even quite dynamic when slammed with my MojoMojo (Paul Gilbert always has good tone, so I bought one recently). He's got some little tweak for Marshall circuits that evolved into the BE100 etc. It's pretty cool whatever it is.

Hmm I think the original SL68 was perfect as it was - with the added controls I think I would still end up on stock settings

@stevelife8505 I think it sounds like classic power distortion. Do you have an original plexi? If so, what year is yours? What would you say the differences are to an original, to your ears? Most of us will probably never afford an original because they go for insane prices. The ones from the 70s are more affordable, but they're not the same thing as the ones from the 60s. They also re-issued it in the 90s, but that was definitely not the same thing. It would be cool to have, but I would guess that an original 68 in decent condition would be north of $10k. I think a 67 goes for even more. I'd rather buy this or something like it that gets in the ballpark.
