Japan's solution to the shortage of chips for IC cards was to tell tourists to buy cards that were valid for about a month and couldn't be returned, so essentially making those chips single use instead of being able to be used for years and years? What a brilliant idea /s

I arrived in Japan on July 16th, and I was able to obtain the green Suica card from Narita airport. Additionally, I have personally witnessed tourists walk out of the JR center at Shibuya station with the green IC card. So they are absolutely available. 👍👍

Today 09/08/2024 i went to JR service center at Tokyo train station at the nord exit and bought a physical Suica card. There were a post that Welcome Suica are not available anymore here. Last week i went to Hiroshima and Kyoto train stations and Icoca cards were available at the ticket machines. Hope this will help.

I bought my Suica (green/grey) card in Narita airport on 5th July 2024. There is a max. 10-year-amount-balance from your last Suica card usage. Welcome Suica expires in 28 days.

You can use Suica in Osaka but you can't get in Osaka. If you don't have it, you get ICOCA at Kansai airport in Osaka. It has the same function of Suica. I hope you have a wonderful time in Japan!

Suica (green & grey) card has a 10-yr balance from your last usage. After 10 years, the system voids the amount. I'm not sure if the physical card is dead or not.
