Sure, there's A LOT of money to be made, but that usually comes at the cost of actual good game design. A perfect example are the yearly sports titles (2K, Madden, FIFA), they're usually broken & lackluster copy pasted games, but they sell like hot cakes and the sheep keep putting money into the MTX. If you're a publisher making record profits (in the billions) while investing very little in the games, what would motivate you to put more effort?

If you look at how early blizzard developed Diablo 1, it's incredible how they just kinda got the 'you do you' from their higher ups. But nowadays, those managers are just trying to milk money from the franchises they can work with, because they know how to, and also because they kinda have to... So the studios are simply not allowed to risk tanking a game, which obviously is sad, but IS our reality. At least there are still indie games out there which do really cool things.

The problem with huge AAA games is that they have suuuper long development cycles. I can imagine this idea would fly 5-6 years ago when they first started concepting it. But by 2023 we already have seen bazillion games like this, got burned by looters, got burned by live service. Trends in gaming change so fast that trend chasers are often too late to the party, I feel this is the case.

I mostly stick to single-player games, like the Arkham series. Something with a solid story that I can just go through without having to grind for gear or levels. I rarely play multiplayer games. When I do, it’s something like RE5, Smash Bros, or occasionally Borderlands. I basically never play live-service games, and especially never ones that look like this. FF14 is the only one I’d really say I play, as it is *technically* a live-service, but the model is very different. I was really hoping at first that this would be in the first category. I was apprehensive about it probably being in the second. The fact that it’s in the third means I’ll probably never play it. After Gotham Knights, I was really looking forward to this to be a breath of fresh air. That was some real irony, it turns out.

Most people would. Make the characters unique, have team up power ups, make some character stronger so people can argue about it on forums. This was such an easy game to make. And they made this Saints Row 4, Agents Mayhem bullshit. There is a game that still people play, that is soo old that some of the developers were 10 when it came out. Team Fortress 2. Sefton Hill & Jamie Walker (the co-founders of Rocksteady, the geniuses responsible for the Arkham trilogy) quit their own company last year. No one talked about this news and barely any outlets covered the story because we were all too busy ripping into Gotham Knights and laughing at GTA 6 leaks. The creatives have already abandoned their own game. From the moment this game was revealed, the hideous aesthetic, the confused tone, the odd characterisations of our beloved (and sort of brainwashed) heroes, and so many more elements were giant red flags. Isn’t there an upcoming Wonder Woman game being developed using the Mordor nemesis-system? WB Games are sitting on a goldmine, yet continue to make blind decisions.

These guys built that studio from nothing and turned it into one of the most prolific in the industry and produced a trilogy of games that defined a genre, with Arkham City still regarded as a high watermark for said genre. They spent 8 years making suicide squad, and I get they wanted to move on to other things, but if they had ANY faith or pride in this game they would hold off on leaving. If you put 8 years into building something would you walk away if you were happy with the end result??? no you wouldn't.

To be fair, I don't think Harley is any stranger to guns. It works for her. But Boomerang should be all about... Y'know, boomerangs?!? Giving him some speed force is a nice little upgrade to his capabilities but maybe lean into it more. Maybe make him like some kind of weird spell slinger archetype, emphasis on the slinging, of boomerangs, that have a variety of special effects. And King Shark may as well play like a feral Hulk. Absolute melee focus. Only ranged attacks being throwing around enemies and vehicles basically. But nope. All guns.

But to answer your question, yes without a doubt. Some of these guys are die hard gamers who are passionate about game making. They have friends and family asking about their upcoming game. Some of them probably went to Rocksteady BECAUSE of their amazing work on Batman. You can just imagine their reaction when they were told by their game director that they were making a Live service game about suicide squad of all things. There is bound to be a good chunk of 'em who will look comments and reactions from fans. I wouldn't be surprised if some employees just straight up left the compagny after the game is released. I won't jump on the hate train until the game is released and we get to see it for ourselves, but this game really is disappointing. They should've stuck to what made them, singleplayer superheroe focused game.

To add onto your comment about Batman’s kit being appropriate, even the side characters were fairly unique. While Azrael, Batgirl, and Nightwing were mostly the same, Robin came with a collapsible shield and sticky flash bombs, while Catwoman had caltrops and her whip. They even made her more lightweight, so while she has a harder time beating down enemies, she’s more stealthy and can crawl across ceilings.

There was so much they could've done with these characters. Deadshot could still be the main run and gun guy, but you could also do sniper segments where he snipes an enemy with impossibly angled shots. Y'know, like he did in Arkham City. Harley could've brought us into familiar territory by focusing primarily on stealth and taking enemies down one by one. Conversely, Boomerang could still utilize the free form combat the Arkham games were known for, just replace the batarangs with unique boomerangs and you're good to go. King Shark could act as your typical big strong dude that can cause massive destruction and mayhem either as a distraction or to get through obstacles where stealth isn't an option. Instead, they're are all Deadshot. Like, what's even the point of Deadshot if his main gimmick is shared with the other three characters?

Surely there were great games like Uncharted 4, God of War 4, Horizon Zero Dawn or the Witcher III which I all liked. And considering the jump in graphics between Uncharted 4 and 3 without any dip in gameplay quality surely made me think that I really liked where this is going. But lately I came to realize that I liked the 7th generation games much more. And that's really because of the backlog because I clean it up at a ratio of 3 PS3 games to 1 PS4 game. And I always feel the classic "man, they just don't make 'em like this anymore" feeling. Of course every person is different and taste is a subjective thing. But I think that I really liked the 7th generation the most. I honestly care more for remakes, remasters or trophy patches for old games than most of the stuff that is actually being released by huge publishers today. I know it's not gonna happen but innovation nowadays should be left to the indi scene. And the big AAA just should do remasters and trophy patches. Of course they wouldn't earn billions through micro transactions that way. But it's a few select titles that do anyways while the vast majority of live services falls. It's a huge financial gamble that doesn't pay off. On the contrary while remasters and trophy patches of old games wouldn't earn them billions either at least they wouldn't cost hundreds of millions to make.

And then they sell skins for $20 which is too expensive even more expensive than the BP which is nonsensical. Now the worse of the worse Live Service games, not only have BP, expensive skins, they also have lootboxes, and their BP aren't worth the price or the prices are higher than Fortnite's BP. It's becoming too greedy and not fun anymore... Especially since we barely get anything cool we can unlock for free in the game, and even that wouldn't be free since we still have to pay for games as well...

It has taken WAAAYY too long for people to finally start fighting back against live service (microtransaction filled) games. That level of greed has ruined SOO many games and people have let it go on for FAR too long. But im glad they are finally starting to get fed up with it.

I'm not running from games whenever there is a slight bit of shade there if it's nit picking I'll get over it like pretty much everything else as long as you go in mutual agreement and assert expectations you'll be fine.
