D H res·to·ra·tion ˌrestəˈrāSH(ə)n/ noun 1. the action of returning something to a former owner, place, or condition. He modernized the home; what he did was a renovation, not a restoration! Every bit of history was destroyed!

I disagree with a lot of these comments. What is the use in having a big old farmhouse on your property if nobody wants to live in it? Most of the time a new house gets built and the old one sits there and rots away for a few more years before they eventually decide to knock it down. Old houses are not fit for modern use. The layout is all wrong, tiny kitchens, bathrooms and laundry are stuck on wherever they could fit. So...when someone actually saves the original structure and incorporates it into their new home, I think that is very respectful to history. It usually does have to be changed to fit but at least some of it is saved and it gets put to use. I think the restoration part and the addition are beautiful.

My parents are currently refurbishing their 1985 farmhouse in VA. Judging by the pictures the part they demolished looked to be a later addition that would not work with the plans they had. Luckily for my parents it's just them and my younger sister, and the house they have is plenty large enough, they are preserving as much of the originality as possible while installing modern conveniences, mainly energy efficient windows & appliances.

Gorgeous! Beautifully restored and finished. Pity, though, that the fires aren't working. Can't you make them work again? A real fire in the living room would be so lovely. Great job. Thanks for sharing.

for safety, possibly budget, to be safe they would have probably needed to be disassembled and rebuilt with some upgrades. I might have opted for gas inserts but original 170+ yr old chimneys likely had no separate flue/damper structure and maybe no room for an insert.

Do agree on this one.

I agree with many of the comments, that this wasn't a true "restoration." So the wording should have been "update" or "rehab." But I also think that this is a HOME, not a museum, and the family living there wanted to be comfortable and live in this century. Having said that, I do think the front of the house would benefit from having period-correct shutters added. Not having shutters makes the windows look like tiny, squinty eyes.

Believe me, the house is a show piece now. The home was empty for lots of years. It was sad to go by it so many times without any life inside it knowing that families of many generations gone by grew up in it. I think, but don't quote me, the property was owned by the same family name until it was sold.

When you put an addition on a very old house it’s kinda a hit or miss situation..most turn out as a miss. This on the other hand looks like a hit. Good job

I was intrigued when I read the title; "restoration" but then I heard you say "demolish" and I knew right then you weren't going to preserve the house or the integrity of the original build. You should learn the history of a vintage home and go in with the mindset of preserving as much of the authenticity as possible, not putting a modern-day spin on it and completely destroying the architectural details and traditional style. Preserving history does not mean editing to make it more aesthetically pleasing or "bring it up to code" because there were no specific codes or criteria when it was built

Looks like the owners could have just found a new house to get what they wanted rather then buy an historic home and destroy it

I watched a video where a man in New York immaculately restored a farmhouse from the late 1600's. He didn't demolish anything in the house. Why was the back section of the house torn down and the fireplaces not restored? I would never destroy history.
