i know a lot of people think that he was locked in the kafes, the cage. but in his entire reign, mustafa wasn’t locked in the cage. he was just exiled from the imperial palace [topkapi serai, at the time] and he was kept in the old palace [eski serai]. he wasn’t allowed to see anyone from outside the palace but he could talk and interact with people in the palace. i’m not saying that’s a good life, but it’s way better than being in a caged room without human contact. besides, since ahmet didn’t have a very powerful valide sultan [handan sultan was powerful but ahmet restricted her powers], halime sultan was a real threat because she could dethrone ahmet so he kept mustafa in the luxuries of the old palace but didn’t allow him to have other human interactions so that his reign wouldn’t be threatened.

But in the past and not only just the Ottomans but princes had frequently launched murderous coups and civil wars with thousands of innocent citizens dying for the ambition of some noble person and their supporters. The Ottomans decided after just one such disastrous event, its better for one Prince to die than for 10000 innocent civilians to die. Do I agree with killing princes? I dont but you have to understand they weren't trying to be cruel, they themselves couldnt find a perfect solution to save innocent lives. In our modern age its very easy to judge them with our modern perspectives but the reality of the past was very very different and times were much much harder to solve problems.
