I like how their argument kinda boils down to you can't just throw money at a problem to fix but throwing money at a problem is quite literally the solution. They talk about maintenence, not being able to build another well, etc. all things that could be fixed by throwing more money at it with technicians and better plumbing systems. Of course it's kind of an ideal situation to be able to throw infinite money into the problem but starting to throw money into it is a step in the right direction when reality is tons of politicians, organizations, and celebrities just sit around on billions of dollars trying to get richer rather than diverting those funds into much needed causes.

I used to work in the INGO sector - not Sub-Saharan Africa, but mostly Middle East. And yeah, it's not just charities, the whole "aid" industry is fraught with near-deliberate inefficiencies, nepotism, and cultural/social/political/economic myopia. If you want to help by donating, carefully pick local CSOs and CBOs. That said, good on the Beast guy for doing nice things with his money, but I still don't feel like watching his stuff. Sumito, I genuinely appreciate you actually going into the criticism of the well stuff. I actually think that the criticism has merit. Performative stunts without any maintenance always look impressive, but they can fall apart without upkeep. Look at something like Extreme Makeover: Home Edition or Bar Rescue. It is common for the assisted people to foreclose or go bankrupt after the show airs, because the show does not fix the root cause of the problems. I appreciate the positive work that Mr. Beast did here, but this could very easily be a temporary fix that no longer helps in a couple years.

I think the critique is more of a systemic one, that these marketable/clickable acts of charity are prioritised over getting people real help. There are almost certainly more productive uses of the money Mr. Beast spends on these videos, but doing those things is not as popular or flashy so it doesn't make enough profit to be worth doing. The charity of Mr. Beast is undeniably self-centred in that he only does things which will make him money. Not his fault per-se, we all need to eat, but it's still worth pointing out that we shouldn't be taking important work that needs to be done to help people and reducing it to a kind of cheap entertainment.

So what, the solution would be to force people to pay for the wells through taxes, instead of redirecting ad revenue which comes from corporations to build them? Crazy how people have no problem if someone makes millions for doing sh*tty tik tok dances, but if they post a charitable video, there's "controversy" Mr beast will get ad revenue for posting anything, but god forbid he takes ad revenue and does charity with it instead. Wouldn't you agree that if pepsi did something charitable with their money and made a little commercial showing how it was spent in order to advertise their product, that it would be better than spending that money on something like a superbowl commercial?

Instead of donating a penny to some random cause for every bottle of Pepsi sold, they will charge a penny less for Pepsi. Yes, I think the government should handle all charitable matters. If something is worth doing, everyone should chip in. Charities are bad in many ways: they shield the government from the responsibility of fixing problems, they are inherently wasteful as a portion of income goes to funding charity activities to drive donations, they are often corrupt and undemocratic. Charities should not exist. The entire idea of a charity is that what they are doing is unambiguously good, that's why they don't pay taxes. People should have to pay for these unambiguously good things, because most people simply lack the time or effort to decided to go out and donate to a charity. There is no situation where a charity is better for these things than the government. You can even donate to the government through taxes. The reason rich people donate to charity instead is because it's much cheaper (hence much less gets done).

The perverse incentives of "screen economy" is prioritized over any real world honesty or simply acknowledging the truth African people are 100% capable of building wells themselves. The fundamental lies the so-called "African philanthropy" industry is built on is not just perpetuating the system, it is the system. That's why so many "trickle down" mafia hive minds on the internet are all about it because "African philanthropy" enables the unequal "trade" extraction of African resources and interference with African societies by the US, China, and the previous colonial powers some haven't really let go of Africa. In the real world context of what's going on, the "African philanthropy" does far more harm than "good."
