It was originally a travel guide given away free and was made by the Michelin Tire company to encourage more travel and thus sell more tires. There was in fact only a few hedge funds that suffered heavy losses on the GME squeeze. Most of the hedge funds that shorted GME had already started unloading their shorts months prior and some even started accumulating long positions as they saw a turn in the company's financials. It's also shown most of the pressure came from retail traders on the buy side, not wallstreet covering their shorts. Robinhood allegedly shut down buying because they (or their clearing house) were losing hundreds of millions if not billions on the daily because they bundled up their orders and executed them at the end of the day, which does not end well if they sell GME at $100 per share and need to buy it back for $150 at the end of the day to maintain market neutrality.

The folks RObinhood used to complete the trades (clearing house) said they needed more margin collateral (basically the same loan concept) so that's why they had to halt those trades. Not enough collateral. So Robin Hood was shady, and not forthcoming, but there was not much they could do. The real villain was the clearinghouse.
